Welcome to Chandler High School's AVID page. AVID stands for "Advancement Via Individual Determination." The AVID concept was developed in California by Mary Catherine Swanson in the early 1980's. The AVID program was piloted for our district by Bogle JHS and Hamilton HS in 2005. Chandler High instituted its first AVID class in 2006. In 2007, enrollment in AVID tripled and doubled again for 2008. Currently, all but one of the secondary schools in the Chandler district have the AVID program. AVID at Chandler High is considered both a 9-12 college-prep elective class and a school wide set of research instructional practices to improve success for all students. AVID students are capable of completing college-prep curriculum coupled with a strong desire to attend college. The AVID curriculum is designed to help students fulfill their potential; academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational activities hlep keep each student on track. Students apply to be interviewed for the program and, if selected, choose AVID for one of their elective classes each year. AVID students conduct socratic tutorials twice a week, engage in rigorous AVID curriculum (includes: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, and Reading), and participate in both college visits and team building.
