Welcome to SJHS! I have been teaching middle school science since 2010, and I absolutely love getting to share science with the next generation of innovators! I am proud to be part of the awesome Santan community, and I look forward to having a fantastic year in science with all of you. We will be doing many hands-on labs and activities to learn Geology, Astronomy, and Ecology this year, and with the support of your classmates and myself, you are sure to learn some AMAZING things in this class.
My Education and Professional Background
I have my Bachelor's degree in General Biology and Chemistry from the U of A, and I am currently certified to teach middle school science as well as high school biology. I completed my Master's degree in Educational Leadership at ASU in 2016, and I am now a certified school administrator as well, should I eventually decide to take my career in a different direction. I have taught middle school science to 5th through 8th grade students since 2010, and I absolutely love it! Most recently, I worked for BASIS Chandler teaching chemistry, anatomy, and intro. to science, and I came to SJHS in 2015 to teach 7th grade general science. As a 2003 graduate of Chandler High School, I am thrilled to be back in the district I grew up in, and I look forward to many more years of service in Arizona’s #1 school district!
My Educational Philosophy
My Educational Philosophy can be summarized through the words of many great thinkers: • “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” –Benjamin Franklin • “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” –Albert Einstein • “The art of teaching [science] is the art of assisting discovery.” –Mark Van Doren • “They may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” –Carl W. Buehner • “Good schools, like good societies and good families, celebrate and cherish diversity.” –Deborah Meier • The Four C’s of 21st Century Education are Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity. • “Who dares to teach must never cease to learn.” –John Dana • “Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of learners, and the love of bringing the first two loves together.” –Scott Hayden
