    READ180 (6th, 7th and 8th grade)

Welcome to AJHS and the READ180 classroom! All the information you need about READ180 can be found on my web pages. We currently are piloting "Universal and System 44" of READ180 being used with our 7th and 8th grade students enrolled in this class. So, come on in and check out the sites! If you feel like you didn't get all your questions answered or you can't find the information you need, please feel free to drop me an e-mail at wood.carol@cusd80.org. I am available most mornings before school or immediately after school to meet with parents. Please let me know beforehand if you will be stopping by as I do attend meetings frequently.

    My Classroom Mission

To engage students in reading strategies that will improve their love of reading and become successful life long learners.

    Educational Background

I attended the University of Arizona (GO WILDCATS!) and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I also have my Master's Degree from Northern Arizona University. My certificate is in Elementary Education (K-12), plus I have a READING ENDORSEMENT (which basically means I have taken a TON of classes on teaching reading and how children best learn to read).  I also am "highly qualified" in the area of Language Arts for junior high.

    Professional Background
I began my career teaching 2nd grade at Weinberg Elementary and I have taught 1st grades through graduate level in college. I have worked for Chandler Schools since my career began...in 1986. I have been at AJHS teaching Read180 since 2006.

    Educational Philosophy

I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. There are three elements that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment, (1) the teacher acting as a guide, (2) allowing the child's natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, and (3) promoting respect for all things and all people.
I have high expectations for all of my students and feel that every student can learn content and character! By providing quality instruction of reading skills and strategies through differentiated instruction and cooperative learning, I encourage my students to become active participants in their education. Not only do they learn content, but they also gain a sense of community, respect, and responsibility.

    Family and personal interests
I am married to Mark, who is also a teacher, but now retired. We have three beautiful children, all attended and graduated from Chandler High School.  (Our kids are third generation students at Chandler High School.) Our family also includes an English Springer Spaniel named Cooper, and a black and white spotted chihuahua named Carlos. We love to camp, travel, enjoy the beach in San Diego, Rocky Point and wherever there is an ocean and warm sand! Spending time in western Montana is also a favorite place of our family to visit.

I traveled to Kenya, Africa for almost three weeks the past few summers to work with an orphanage of over 250 children from birth to 18 years old. I led a group of teachers at Huruma Childrens' Home in professional development, spent time with the children, and fellowshipped with the students. The home is located outside Nairobi in the city of Ngong. I can't wait to go back!

    The Choice Is Yours

Our area of Chandler offers you many choices for your child's education.  Andersen Jr. High has many valuable aspects to offer you and your child as they transition from elementary to junior high.

We offer the option of single gender classrooms, International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (which leads into Chandler High's program), READ180, and a school wide discipline program (RTP) which provides consistency and safety across the school day. We also have a tutoring program to provide extra support for struggling students. But most of all, AJHS employs caring highly qualified staff who truly care for your children, both academically and personally. We hope you will become a part of the Andersen Jaguar family!
