The Chandler Public Library is hosting summer reading programs for students. The summer reading program can make a huge difference for children who are working on their proficiency in reading.
The program begins June 1 and runs through August 1. Participants can register online from home, or at any one of the four Chandler Public Library locations.
Along with reading activities, each of the Chandler Public Library locations will be hosting many events to keep kids busy during their school break.

Payne Junior High student Luke Hoang’s piano composition piece title “Saturday Procrastination” was one of 12 pieces selected out of work of 40,000 students worldwide to perform at the International Junior Original Concert in Tokyo in August. Luke is believed only be the ninth student from the U.S. since 2000 to receive this opportunity.

Basha High’s unique, community-based four-year senior projects were celebrated at the sixth annual “Basha Gives Back Senior Showcase” with prize money donated by the philanthropic Schnepf family. At this science-fair style event, seniors displayed the benevolent community service projects that they have been working on for the last four years. It is truly incredible what heart and sweat goes into these projects. This year’s winners were: 1st Place Winner $500 : “Small Heart, Big Art,” Claire Mulholand; 2nd Place Winner $300 : “Touchdowns for Liam,” Izzee Adams and Casey Broker; 3rd Place Winner $200: “Everyone’s Got Talent,” Amanda Harkins; Crowd Choice Winner $25 Gift Card : “Beads of Courage,” Natalee Lavergne.

CUSD has a record 30 National Merit Scholars for 2017. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) recognizes and honors the top academically talented students of the United States. ACP Oakland Spanish Students Shine in National ExamPosted by Community Relations Department at 5/21/2017
Spanish students from Arizona College Prep – Oakland attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2017 National Spanish Examinations. Students earned 26 gold, 33 silver and 45 bronze medals along with many honorable mentions. “Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 157,000 students participating in 2017.”

Two Chandler High swimmers stood out in international competitions recently. Freshman Sydney Chun (pictured) recently competed in the Singapore National Age Group swim meet where she won the 400 Individual Medley and placed second in the 200 Butterfly. Additionally, sophmore Jarod Arroyo recently competed in the Puerto Rico Nationals where he placed in three events: he won first place in the 200 and 400 Individual Medley’s and second place in the 800 Freestyle.
