There are specific "things we say" when we are talking about math vocabulary in Essential Math. Below is a fluid list of "things we say" so you can use the same vocabulary at home and in the community with your students.
- "dollar-up" When an item cost is a dollar amount with change, we go to the next dollar up amount to make sure we have enough to pay for the item. For example, item cost $2.95, dollar up amount $3.00.
- "digital date" This is the date in numbers. For example, September 20, 2017 in digital date form is 9/20/17.
- "take one, give one" This is when a subtraction problem requires regrouping. We take one from the neighbor and it give one to the number that needs next to the neighbor.
