Welcome to Honors Chemistry!  This letter gives a brief course description and an explanation of classroom policies and procedures.  Please read, review with your parents and sign the acknowledgement attached.

Chemistry is a lab-based, inquiry-driven introduction to chemistry. Course goals are that students will:

    • Become familiar with the major themes in chemistry.
    • Learn to use scientific methodology in problem solving and report writing.
    • Enhance critical thinking skills.
    • Design, conduct and present a science fair research project for HISEF

Students will conduct a variety of relevant and “hands-on” chemistry investigations.  These investigations emphasize experimental design, data analysis and application of concepts learned.  Technology is used extensively throughout the class as a tool for collecting, analyzing and presenting data.

The following materials are needed for chemistry:

    • Bound Graph paper notebook for lab work. (Carbonless copy available at the bookstore for $12, can be used in AP and Physics next year, or Staples, Office Max for $3 but students must copy labs before turning in.)
    • Scientific Calculator (available at Staples, Office Max, Walgreen’s, approximately $10.00).
    • One package of Dry Erase Markers, Pen, Pencil, and Eraser.

Safety is a top priority in the Chemistry classroom.  All students must sign a safety contract and follow lab safety rules while working in the lab.  Students who do not observe or practice classroom and lab safety will not participate in lab.  General safety instructions will be given at the beginning of the term and specific safety instructions will be given before each lab.

All individuals have a right to an educational environment free from bias, prejudice and bigotry.  As members of the Hamilton High School educational community, students are expected to refrain from participating in acts of harassment that are designed to demean another student’s race, gender, ethnicity, religious preference, disability or sexual orientation.

    CLASSROOM POLICIES (continued)

    • No food or drinks (except water) will be allowed in the classroom.
    • Profanity will not be tolerated in the classroom.

It is the student’s responsibility to make up missed work and labs.

     Please see back of page

    • Extra Help is offered after school one day a week to be determined by classroom teacher. Other times may also be available with advance notice.
    • Late Work: Homework will be checked at the beginning of the period on the due date. Any work turned in after that time will be considered late. Late work will Not be accepted
    • Missed Work: My HHS website, cusd80.com/Page/68841 , will have the assignments posted for students who have been absent.   Work missed because of an excused absence must be submitted within a reasonable time period or the student will receive a zero for the assignment or lab.  All tests and quizzes missed due to an excused absence must be made up within a week.  Students are expected to take the tests and quizzes on scheduled days, an absence the day before will not excuse a student from taking a test or quiz.
    • Cheating: The following actions will be considered cheating:
      1. Claiming credit for work not the product of individual effort.
      2. Providing access to materials/information so that others may wrongly claim credit. (Both parties will receive zero credit)
      3. Knowing about and tolerating observed dishonest behavior.
      4. Since this is a laboratory course, we encourage students to work in cooperative groups. However, all lab reports submitted must be individual and unique.
    • Phone Policy: Cell phones and other electronic devices should be put away during class and will be taken on the first offense if used during class. Any student using a cell phone during a test or quiz will be given a zero on that test or quiz.
    • Tardy Policy: Students not in their seats before the bell rings will be marked tardy.  The following outlines the consequences for tardies:
    1. First tardy a warning
    2. Second tardy parent contact
    3. Third tardy referral to administration
    • Attendance: Attendance is critical in Honors Chemistry.  After nine absences, a student may be subject to removal from the class.

Students and parents will be able to access grades through Infinite Campus.  Please keep in mind it takes a few days for grades to be updated once new assignments have been entered.  Students are responsible for checking their grades. Grades for the course will be computed based on a weighted average of your scores in the following categories:

                Tests & Quizzes (assessments)                              60%

Lab Reports and Associated Quizzes                      25%

                Homework and Classwork (assignments)              15%

Semester grades are cumulative and the final exam is 20% of the final grade. Parents can access student grades through Infinite Campus
