Why CUSD Follows a Modified Year-Round Calendar
Chandler Unified School District has followed a modified year-round calendar for more than 30 years. This approach allows for more balanced learning throughout the year, with two-week breaks in the fall, winter, and spring, which helps reduce burnout for students and staff. While traditional year-round calendars often include shorter summers, CUSD’s modified version honors the community’s preference for a longer summer break.
Our calendar is developed through a five-year planning process by a representative committee, which takes into account state requirements, instructional balance between semesters, and valued milestones—like ending the school year by Memorial Day. Although the Arizona heat is a valid concern, we prioritize student safety with air-conditioned transportation, indoor alternatives during excessive heat, and strict adherence to county-issued heat index guidelines.
We encourage anyone who is interested in being on the calendar committee to reach out to their school site.
