Child Mind Institute: Screen Time & Technology
Setting limits with technology helps kids to learn to use screens in a healthy way as too much time online can impact self-esteem and make them feel anxious and sad.
The Child Mind Institute is an independent, national nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of children and families struggling with mental health and learning disorders. Teams work every day to deliver the highest standards of care, advance the science of the developing brain and empower parents, professionals and policymakers to support children when and where they need it most.
Family Digital Wellness Guide
With technology constantly evolving, it is understood that parents and caregivers may feel concerned, confused, or even guilty about their decisions around their children’s use of screens. Instead of worrying about how you’re handling your child’s technology use, ask yourself, “How can I help my child utilize interactive media in a way that creates a positive effect on their overall mental and physical health?
Research shows that technology and digital media, when used with intention, can support well-being, Boston Children's Hospital has designed this guide to empower families as they navigate their way through the ongoing process of intentional engagement with these powerful tools, both online and off.
Boston Children's Hospital Digital Wellness Lab believes that by following the science, we can create an empathetic and respectful world in which our kids can grow up healthy, smart, and kind.
Healthy Screen Habits
Select the tools that will help you plan how to mindfully use technology. We've curated some of the best books, websites, podcasts, and articles that will provide the information you need to make wise choices in how you manage screen time.
The Family Technology Plan allows you to sit down together and develop a guide for screen use and best practices in your home. (The Family Technology Plan is also available in Spanish).
Healthy Screen Habits is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that empowers families to create healthy habits for screen use, and to maintain technology as a tool– never as a replacement– for human connection. They bring awareness, so people understand the effects of technology and social media use on the brain and well-being.

Fentanyl Warning for Parents/Guardians and Students
Dear Parents/Guardians,During national school counselor’s week, we would like to bring to your attention the dangers of Fentanyl. Chandler Unified School District is proactively educating students / staff and parents about dangerous rise of fentanyl in our community and the nation.
Last year fentanyl was a major contributing factor to overdose deaths in Arizona. This year the trend has worsened. Overdoses from fentanyl, a synthetic opioid approved for treating severe pain such as advanced cancer pain, are on the rise. Consider having a conversation with your child about the dangers of illicitly manufactured fentanyl.
WHAT IS FENTANYL AND WHY IS IT DANGEROUS?
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid 50 to 100 times more potent than heroin or morphine. In the medical field it is used to treat severe pain, but it is also produced and sold illegally. Illicit fentanyl is often found in counterfeit pills that can look like legitimate pharmaceutical pills. Unsuspecting users — especially young people — may be unaware of the possibility that legitimate-looking pills may not be what they seem and could be deadly.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO KEEP KIDS SAFE?
- Recognize what illicit fentanyl looks like.
Fentanyl has been found in counterfeit oxycodone pills marked as “M30,” counterfeit Percocet, and counterfeit Xanax. It has also been found in pills marked “K9,” “A215,” and “V48.” These pills are typically blue, green, or white in color, though counterfeit pills may occur in any color or shape. Fentanyl has also been found in powders.
- Teach about the dangers of fentanyl.
Kids and adolescents may not be aware that a single pill can be deadly. Young people should be educated about what fentanyl is, why it is dangerous, and where it might be encountered. Counterfeit pills are especially dangerous because they purport to be something they are not. Never take a pill unless it was prescribed to you and obtained from a pharmacy.
- Secure and/or dispose of prescription medications.
- Secure all prescription modifications in a lock box in your home.
- If a child is prescribed an opioid by a pediatrician, supervise daily until the medication is finished, use a pill box to keep track, and never let your child manage on their own.
- Dispose of unused or expired medications at a pharmacy or drop box. Find a safe disposal location near you here.

There’s no single cause for suicide. Suicide most often occurs when stressors and health issues converge to create an experience of hopelessness and despair. Depression is the most common condition associated with suicide, and it is often undiagnosed or untreated. Conditions like depression, anxiety, and substance problems, especially when unaddressed, increase risk for suicide.
Yet it’s important to note that most people who actively manage their mental health conditions go on to engage in life.
