What is Art Masterpiece at CUSD?
The CUSD Art Masterpiece program is a volunteer-led art enrichment program that introduces elementary school students to a wide variety of artists, styles, and cultures. Our volunteers—known as Art Guides—are parents and community members who bring art into the classroom through engaging lessons and hands-on projects that inspire creativity and an appreciation for art.
I would like to be an art guide…but I don’t know much about art. Is that a problem?
No prior experience in art or teaching is required—enthusiasm, reliability, and a willingness to engage with students matter most. Art Masterpiece is a unique opportunity to spend time in your child’s classroom while sharing meaningful experiences with all students. Art Guides commit about one hour a month and, in return, enjoy the rewarding experience of bringing art education to curious and appreciative learners.
Is there training for Art Guides?
Yes, our one-time training course will give you everything you need to feel confident leading lessons. When it’s time to present, you’ll use ready-made lessons in an easy-to-use Google Slides format—so there’s no need to create or plan anything on your own. All art materials are also provided. This approach takes the pressure off and lets you focus on guiding a fun, engaging experience for students.
What are lessons like?
Lessons take place during school hours at a time that works for both the art guide and the classroom teacher. Art guides lead a sixty-minute presentation about once a month, for a total of six sessions throughout the school year. Most of each presentation is hands-on, with students exploring the featured artist or style using a variety of art mediums. The program helps students build an appreciation for art by introducing key elements and principles in creative, age-appropriate ways.
