Nutrition & Allergy Policies

District Wellness Policy
What is a District Wellness Policy?
District wellness policies focus on improving health and preventing childhood obesity. The goal is to create a school environment that includes healthy food choices and encourages physical activity as well as other wellness activities.
Click here to view our current wellness policy.
Why do districts need a wellness policy?
District wellness policies are required for all schools participating in USDA's Child Nutrition Programs - school breakfast, school lunch or the after-school snack program. Any district with one of these programs was required to have a wellness policy in place by the beginning of the 2006-07 school year.
Who developed the CUSD Wellness Policy?
Chandler Unified School District used a team of over 20 people to develop the policy, including CUSD Nutrition staff, Board members, district and school administrators, district employees, school nurses, teachers and parents.
Wellness Policy Assessment Tool
Chandler Unified School District uses an assessment tool to guarantee the effectiveness of our wellness policy. Our Wellness committee, who meets biannually, uses this tool to evaluate and update our Wellness Policy based on the overall score. You can find this tool here.

Special Meals & Allergy Policy
CUSD Nutrition is able to accommodate most student allergies. We have a specialty menu created for students on our Special Diet Program that is made without the top nine allergens (wheat, egg, milk, soy, fish, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame) and gluten. If your child requires dietary accommodation in the cafeteria, please click to download our Special Diet Form.
Complete the form and send to our Registered Dietitian and Menu Planner, Courtney Truono, RDN at truono.courtney@cusd80.com.
On Peanuts:
Our kitchens only serve pre-packaged peanut products; we do not have open peanut butter containers in our facilities. Please understand that unless the school prohibits students and staff from bringing in foods containing peanuts, the school environment will not be peanut-free.
Under USDA regulations, School Foodservice Authorities are required to accommodate medical dietary needs; this does not include religious or personal preferences.
Field Trip Policy
Did you know we can provide students with healthy lunches for their field trips?
Parents, feel free to reach out to your students' teacher if you would like your child to receive a sack lunch from the school cafeteria for their field trip.
Teachers, we would love to help you prepare for your field trip, allowing you to focus on education and stress less about the smaller details. To order for your class, simply reach out directly to your school's kitchen manager. Don't forget to review the food safety information below too!
Students may choose between the following two entrees below:
Option 1: Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich
Option 2: Turkey & Cheese Sandwich
All lunches will include a fresh fruit, vegetable and two milk fat options.
Food Safety Procedures For Field Trip Chaperones
Please observe the following procedures:
- To ensure food quality and safety, store field trip meals in insulated containers with the cover secured until meal service and keep the insulated container away from direct sunlight. Please drop off an insulated container with the kitchen manager or request one from the kitchen at least a week in advance.
- Always wash your hands prior to distributing meals.
- Encourage students to wash their hands prior to meal service.
- Serve the meal as soon as possible to prevent prolonged storage, at a minimum within four hours of picking up meals from food service.
- Do not serve food items that have been left out of insulated containers for more than two hours.
- Discard ALL leftover food items in an appropriate receptacle immediately following meal service.
Thank you for letting us help your students receive access to delicious and nutritious meals, whether on a school campus or on a field trip adventure!
