AI Literacy Learning Progressions
CUSD's AI Advisory Committees (comprised of teachers, administrators, and other staff members) met throughout 2024-2025 and discussed what AI literacy truly means for our students. It became clear that preparing students for the AI age meant much more than teaching them how to productively use AI tools ... it meant focusing on larger questions like when AI should and shouldn't be used, how it can be used to support learning rather than detract from learning, what its limitations and dangers are, why companies design AI tools the way they do, and why even tasks that use AI should remain human-focused. After hours of collaboration and numerous iteratins, these committees developed the CUSD AI Literacy Learning Progressions.
These progressions are designed to be cumulative and scaffolded. This means that while each grade band introduces new skills, teachers in older grades (3-5, 6-8, 9-12) are encouraged to reinforce and build upon the foundational AI competencies introduced in the preceding grade bands.
The Progressions include grade-level skills and techniques for the following AI Competencies (alignment with CUSD's Portrait of a Learner in parentheses):
- Human-Centered Mindset (Empathy, Global Citizenship)
- Ethics of AI (Critical Thinking, Adaptability)
- AI Techniques & Applications (Critical Thinking, Collaboration)
- AI System Design (Communication, Collaboration)
