Hi Auxier families, My name is Dr. van Oostrom, but most kids call me Dr. V. Thank you for visiting my page. I have been an elementary school Music Specialist since 2005 and I am really looking forward to my first year at Auxier Elementary!
My Education and Professional Background
I am an Orff-Schulwerk trained instructor and have served on the board of the Arizona Chapter of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association since 2007. I hold a Ph.D. in music composition from Stony Brook University and degrees in music theory/composition from California State University, Sacramento. I have performed with, and composed for orchestras, chamber groups and rock bands. My music and music-making has been recognized by organizations such as Meet the Composer, the Davis Arts Council and the Festival of New American Music. Currently, I teach private music lessons in Ahwatukee.
My Educational Philosophy
My goal is to pass along my enthusiasm for making music and an understanding of its inner workings. In my classes, students will experience an active music curriculum where they learn music by doing music. Students will develop language, reasoning, creative thinking and problem-solving skills; experience intrinsic rewards for their hard work and being a team player; and they will strengthen their self-confidence, self-reliance, individual expression and creativity. My approach to teaching provides students with the skills and knowledge to pursue further musical studies if they’d like to, and the character-building benefits of being a musical person for those students who choose to explore other areas of study.
