|Position:||English Teacher and Professor|
Hello, my name is Dr. Powell. Welcome to my webpage! I am eager and excited to work with the students at Casteel!
My Education and Professional Background
I have been teaching English for twenty-two years. I have my PhD in English Education from ASU and wrote my dissertation on teachers as writers. I continue to teach Masters in Education classes for Grand Canyon University and have published numerous peer-reviewed articles for educational journals as well as two books. In my spare time I enjoy hiking, camping and reading. I am a long-distance swimmer who loves to meet with friends for lunch or dinner. I pride myself on mentoring former students who become English teachers.
My Educational Philosophy
My educational philosophy uses the metaphor of a patchwork quilt. The teacher and students make up the squares of the material, through their shared experiences together, that interweave learning. These squares tell a narrative, a story of our shared ideas. For education to work successfully, students are an integral part of their learning and must remain engaged and inquisitive. This is led by the shared ideas of the teacher and the students.
