About
Smith...
Welcome to CTA 6th grade at Patterson! I am excited for another year with a great group of students. I live in Gilbert with my husband, Travis, and two spoiled dogs, Walter and Ozzy. My stepson, Austin, is currently serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, and my stepdaughter, Kallie, attends Northern Arizona University. Outside of the classroom I love reading, decorating, motorcycle rides, and spending time with family and friends. I am also a volunteer reader for Sun Sounds of Arizona.
My Education and Professional Background
I received my bachelor degree in 1999 from ASU, and upon graduating I went to work for the Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Department, supervising kids in the detention center. Most of the youth I worked with hadn't been to school in years, and many couldn't read. A belief in the power of education, and a desire to make a positive difference in the lives of children led me to this career change. I earned my teacher certification and began teaching in CUSD in 2006, and finished my Master of Education degree at ASU in 2008. I am also a certified Write from the Beginning and Thinking Maps trainer.
My Educational Philosophy
The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
