My Educational Philosophy

The role or function of a teacher is to facilitate student learning. This can be accomplished in many ways using varying instructional pedagogies. I consider active learning environments, which incorporate exploring, conjecturing, evaluating, and problem solving, in a collaborative setting to be the most effective means for promoting student mathematical understanding. The eight mathematical practices, proposed by the common core encompass these principles. For students to be successful they must also be enthusiastically engaged in the learning process. I believe this is encouraged by creating meaningful tasks that advance practical applications of mathematical concepts, which induce student curiosity and challenge them to discover solutions to the presented conditions. I therefore strive to provide classroom experiences that support these practices.
