CUSD Student-Athletes Inspire the Next Generation

In a powerful display of mentorship and community, Chandler Unified School District Athletics recently hosted a leadership seminar for about 100 student-athletes from each of the district's junior high and middle schools. The event was built to inspire, educate, and empower young leaders for life both on and off the field.

The younger students gained firsthand insights from a panel of juniors and seniors representing all six CUSD high schools. These mentors—many of whom have already signed letters of intent or received collegiate offers—answered candid questions about the realities of high-level competition.

Topics included:

  • The Balancing Act: Practical strategies for managing the dual roles of student and athlete.

  • Under Pressure: Healthy ways to navigate expectations from family and the heat of competition.

The high schoolers offered a "playbook" for success, urging their younger peers to stay true to themselves, develop disciplined routines, and lean on teammates for support.

Junior high athletic directors also engaged the high school athletes with questions about preparing for big games and tournaments. Once again, the high school students shared valuable strategies they have learned through experience—tools the younger athletes can immediately apply in their own sports journeys.

The Power of the Mind

The seminar also featured Ashley Rodarte, a Perry High alumna and incoming head badminton coach. Currently pursuing a master’s at Arizona State University, Rodarte shared a compelling "flashlight" analogy for mental performance: whatever you point your mind toward becomes your reality. By focusing on growth rather than self-doubt, athletes can fundamentally change their performance.

CUSD Athletics: More Than Just a Game!

This leadership seminar is just one example of the many opportunities provided through CUSD Athletics. CUSD student-athletes consistently compete at the highest levels, with many continuing on to college athletics, military service, and even professional sports.

Being an athlete is about far more than physical ability—it’s about leadership, mental strength, dedication, determination, and grit.

Whether your student participates in school sports or plays competitively outside of school, Chandler Unified School District offers outstanding opportunities to grow, compete, and succeed. Countless families choose CUSD not only for our strong academic programs but also for our exceptional athletic offerings.

Athletics in Chandler Unified School District are truly second to none.
