Basha High - (2015-2016) Basha High student, Kathleen Romero, has been accepted and will attend Interlochen Arts Camp, the world's premier summer arts program for aspiring artist grades 3 through 12. While at Basha, Kathleen competed in Regional and All State competitions receiving second in region and state. She also received an Excellent rating for Solo and Ensemble. For the past several years, she has also been an oboist for the Phoenix Youth Symphony and the Youth Symphony of the Southwest.
Basha High - (2015-2016) Basha High CCAP (Careers through Culinary Arts Program) students Braelyn Deem and Damian Rohman were honored recently. Braelyn won a $5,000 scholarship. Damian won an industry scholarship valued at $3,000 that includes a job with M Culinary, and paid coursework for a CCAP industry certification at a large catering company here in the valley where he will be mentored by a top Phoenix Chef.
Basha High - (2015-2016) Congratulations to the State Winning Basha FFA (Future Farmers of America) Nursery Landscape Team with teacher Sharon Metzger. Basha will proudly represent Arizona FFA at the National FFA Convention this fall. In addition, our Horse Evaluation team placed 3rd in the state.
Basha High - (2015-2016) This past weekend, Basha High School's Varsity Girls Tennis team went undefeated en route to winning the East Valley Invitational Tournament. In the tournament final, we won three out of four doubles matches to earn the trophy. Congratulations to Basha High Coach Charles Johnson and each member of our team.
Basha High - (2015-2016) P.L.A.C.E. (Preparatory Life Achievement Center of Education) creates opportunities to help prepare young adults for employment. Bashas Grocery Store on Gilbert and Chandler Heights has been working with Basha High School for eight years to create an extension of the classroom. Young adults apply job skills learn in class to a real world environment every Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
Basha High - (2015-2016) The Basha High DECA program along with teacher Scott Martin, traveled to the East Valley Institute of Technology on Tuesday, January 12 for their Desert Region Competition. They competed at a very high level and represented the Chandler Unified School District with great pride and professionalism. Basha DECA was able to earn eight test medals, 17 team and individual role play medals, and eight overall first place finishers. They truly represented Basha with Benevolence, Honor, and Scholarship.
Basha High - (2015-2016) Our Bears continue to boldly go where no other Basha Academic Decathlon team has ever gone before. In their competition at Williams Field, joined by Basha High teachers Esther Bateson and Charles Johnson, their team won 11 individual event awards, took 3rd place in Super Quiz as a team, and won 3rd place overall in the event! All this, and they still prepare to get ready for Regionals, State, and beyond. Go Bears!
Basha High - (2015-2016) For the second year in a row, Basha High's Air Force JROTC program, consisting of cadets from both Basha and Perry High School, has raised $900 for Honor Flight Arizona. From October to December these cadets saved their nickels, dimes and quarters to meet their goal of $900, enough to pay for a Chandler-area WWII veteran to travel to Washington, D.C.. The goal of the Honor Flight program is to pay homage to our WWII heroes by supporting them on their 3-day journey of honor and remembrance.

Basha High - (2015-2016) Our Basha High Academic Decathlon Team, led by teacher Charles Johnson, had another strong performance at the Region IV Tournament. Congratulations to Riley Linch (Gold in Speech), Seth Wuthrich (Silver in Speech), Isaac Chappel (Bronze in Language and Literature), and Ethan Wuthrich (Bronzes in Essay and Math) for medalist in the competition. Our team was recognized as the most improved team in our region, increasing our team score by over 16,000 points from last year's results!
Basha High - (2015-2016) Former Basha High School graduate, Kaela Oakes, went on to a very successful basketball career at Idaho State and also earned her nursing degree. In an effort to honor her, she is being inducted into the City of Chandler Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, Feb. 13th at 11 am at the Chandler Center for the Arts.
Basha High - (2015-2016) Basha High School's Air Force JROTC, along with teacher Colonel Cliff Stansell, USAF, recently completed a 4-day intense Space Exploration field trip to Pasadena and Los Angeles, CA. From February 17-20, during a first-of-its-kind trip for the program, 16 students toured the Griffith Observatory, Caltech, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, SpaceX, the Reagan Presidential Library and the Space Shuttle Endeavour on display at the California Science Center.

Basha High - (2015-2016) Basha High School is proud to announce our very own senior Dustyn Phillips was named Arizona's top youth volunteer of 2016 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Award. As a State honoree, Dustyn will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense-paid trip in early May to Washington D.C, where he will join the other top honorees from each of the other states and the District of Columbia for four days at a national recognition event.

His candidacy is based on outstanding performance on ACT Assessment or the College Board SAT. Basha High - (2015-2016) Noteworthy and Counterpoint Choirs, under the direction of Robyn Bydalek, competed in the Arizona Choral Educators Fall Festival in Mesa and received and Excellent with Distinction rating, and a Superior with Distinction Rating. These ratings were given to them based on their performance and sight reading abilities. Both Noteworthy, and Counterpoint qualified for the State Choir festival, in April, with these scores.
Basha High - (2015-2016) Jennifer Wortzel has been honored not only as the Arizona Language Association (AZLA) Outstanding Foreign Language Teacher of the Year at the Secondary level, but also the AZLA Teacher of the Year (TOY). In March, she will represent Basha High School, CUSD, and the state of AZ to compete against the TOYs from 11 states in the Southwest Region at the Southwest Conference on Language Teaching (SWCOLT) with the possibility of representing at the national level in the future.
Basha High - (2015-2016) BHS student Soraya Smith was one of seven students chosen from all around the valley in the fall of her Sophomore year to participate in the Barrow Neurological student research program. So far to date she has accumulated over 400 hours of research study while maintaining a 4.46 GPA.

Basha High - (2015-2016) Basha High Science Teacher Dr. Michael McKelvy has been selected as a state finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This qualifies him for the national competition. A national selection committee reviews the state finalist applications and makes recommendations, which are forwarded to the White House. The President of the United States will announce the national recipients by summer of 2017.
Basha High - (2015-2016) Basha High Senior Samuel Rozinski was contacted by Southwest Shakespeare Company and invited to audition for The Merry Wives of Windsor. He was 1 of 4 high school students in the state of Arizona invited to audition.
Basha High - (2015-2016) Basha High Agriculture Instructor Sharon Metzger was awarded San Tan District Teacher of the Year, Arizona Agriculture Teacher of the Year as well Advocacy Award winner by the Arizona Agriculture Teachers Association. The San Tan District is made up of Gilbert, Chandler and Queen Creek Schools.
Basha High - (2014-2015) Three Basha High students, Jacob Howard (drums), Andrew Fox (horn), and Jake Lankford (horn), participated in the Macy's Great American Marching Band. This 250-member marching band represents students from 50 states and is the official band of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The students auditioned for a chance to participate.

Basha High - (2014-2015) Basha High boys golf team won the 2014 Rivalry Cup Championship. A 36-hole team total of 597 was good enough for a 12-stroke win over Mountain View. Also, congratulations to the 2014 Rivalry Cup individual champion Mason Andersen. Mason shot 70-68 for a two-day total of 6-under par.
Basha High - (2014-2015) Zach Werlinger, 2014 Basha High graduate, has been named one of five National Scholar Athlete award winners by the National Football Foundation. He was named Scholar Athlete of the Year by the Valley of the Sun chapter last spring and was selected as one of 36 national finalists. Representing the West region, Zach will fly to New York City in December for the National Football Foundation awards luncheon.

Basha High - (2014-2015) BHS student, Dustyn Phillips, wanted to positively affect children in Brazil while visiting there. With the help of Faith Celebration Ministries he and his fellow Basha Kids Helping Kids friend Logan, took over 200 youth soccer uniforms and donated them to a non-profit neighborhood youth literacy program. The founder explained that they use soccer (futbol) as a way to encourage youth to participate in the reading program. They are not funded by the government, but rather donors and volunteers.
Basha High - (2014-2015) Andrew Fox, Jacob Howard, and Jake Lankford have been invited to march with the Great American Marching Band in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. They will arrive in NY on Sunday (11/23) to start rehearsing with this group, comprised of students from all over the US. The GAMB traditionally leads the start of the parade!
Basha High - (2014-2015) The Basha Bear Regiment competed in the State marching festival and earned a rating of excellent (with special awards for Outstanding Guard, Percussion, Visual Performance, Music Performance, and General Effect). Additionally, they competed in the State championships, earning 8th place in Division 1 for the state of AZ.

Fifty-six students and adults from Basha High School Band worked to feed thousands of starving children in developing countries throughout the world.

The varsity co-ed, varsity pom and partner stunt teams all qualified for the AIA State spiritline competition in January. The varsity cheer team took first place in the tournament last year and is well on its way to defend their title. Additionally, the Chandler High pom team and partner stunt team qualified for the competition.

Basha High - (2013-2014) Zach Werlinger was recognized by the National Football Foundation as their Scholar Athlete of the Year. This Chapter represents over 238,000 students from 182 High schools in Central and Northern Arizona. Zach set school records for season passing TD's and passing yards and was named Offensive Player of the Year' for CUSD. He is President of NHS and has a weighted GPA of 4.5. Basha High - (2013-2014) Basha hosted a holiday extravaganza in conjunction with Smiles of Christmas to provide 160 first and second grade students from San Marcos Elementary with Christmas memories to last a lifetime. Assistant Principal Michelle Good worked tirelessly with the NHS and many other organizations on campus to make it a huge success. Each elementary student spent the day playing games and visiting Santa with their own Basha student/mentor.
Basha High - (2013-2014) Basha High's International Thespian Society opened its doors in November to the deaf community with a special production of Aida written by Elton John and Tim Rice. This is the first time a main stage high school production has been fully interpreted in the district. Eight American Sign Language students from BHS and two professional signers will interpret the entire production for the last show. The group plans another deaf culture event in the spring with a production of Pride & Prejudice.
Basha High - (2013-2014) For the 5th straight year, the Bear Regiment earned a rating of Superior at State Festival in November 2013. We received the highest ranking, qualifying in the top ten for the state, and will attend the Championships later this month.

Basha High - (2013-2014) The Washington Post announced America's Most Challenging High Schools and Basha High School is ranked as the Top Comprehensive High School in Arizona. Schools are ranked through an index formula that's a simple ratio: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year. A ratio of 1.000 would mean the school had as many tests as graduates. The Washington Post
Basha High - (2013-2014) Basha High was the only school representing Arizona at the Mu Alpha Theta National Math Convention in July, a competition for high schools and 2-year colleges with roughly 650 students attending from all around the U.S. David Li, BHS senior, placed 8th in Sequences and Series, 5th in Mu Calculus, and 1st in Computer Science. Tyler Pinho, BHS class of 2013 and now a freshman at ASU, placed 10th overall in the Chalk Talk, and senior Logan Mahan received 14th place in the Gemini competition. Basha High - (2013-2014) Basha was able to send their top four students to the grand finale of the Mu Alpha Theta National Convention, the State Bowl where only the top five states receive awards. 'We were HUGE underdogs and were told by someone that it would be impossible for us to place,' said teacher Mrs. Smith. Seniors David Li and Connor Schmitt, as well as juniors Samantha Bouchal and Sebastian Scouras, established themselves as true contenders by taking 3rd place in the biggest competition of the convention. Basha High - (2013-2014) At the Career and Technical Education summer conference, in Tucson, Basha High was awarded Outstanding AgriScience Program of the Year from the Arizona Agricultural Teachers Association. This means that they are the No. 1 chapter in the state. The BHS AgriScience program will be representing Arizona at both the region and national levels. Teachers Sharon Metzger and Katharyn Kubista were honored with a plaque that is hanging in the front office of Basha High.
Basha High - (2013-2014) Basha High School's AgriScience Department was awarded the NAAE Outstanding Agriculture Program of the Year at the Arizona Agricultural Education Association Annual Meeting in July. 'This is the highest honor that a program can receive from the state. It proves that we have a very strong program and our kids are working hard. It brings a lot of prestige to our program,' said Katharyn Kubista, AgriScience teacher at Basha High School.
