Welcome to Santan Junior High School !! My name is Karen Drabeck and this year I will be teaching 7th and 8th grade math on Team 7C, the Long Beach State Lightning. I can't wait to get to know each of my new students and to provide meaningful math experiences that will help each one to achieve success.
My Education and Professional Background
I was born and raised in Southern California where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, with an endorsement in Mathematics, and obtained my teaching credentials all from California State University, Long Beach in 1995. Before coming to Santan I taught mathematics for eight years in Torrance, Ca. I began teaching here at Santan in 2005 and have loved every year that I have been here. I love being a math teacher and cannot imagine working in a different career. I am married and have 2 boys, Hunter and Cole and a yellow lab Rigby that keep me very active. In my spare time I enjoy hiking, swimming, boating, playing sports, going out to dinner, attending sporting events and watching movies.
My Educational Philosophy
I feel that a teacher's role is to guide children, helping them along their academic journey. I believe that math is a subject that should be enjoyed through participating in math experiences where meaningful learning takes place. Although some parts of math have to be memorized, most of our math learning comes from exploring math concepts so that we gain a deeper conceptual understanding of what we are doing and of why the traditional algorithms work. Math is not just a subject, but a way of thinking.
