STEM Lesson
Michelle Capriotti teaches a class at Casteel High School that gives students an opportunity to explore teaching as a possible career. Students in the class spend one day a week in an elementary classroom. Shown in this picture Sierra Bingham, a sophomore at Casteel, teaching a STEM lesson to third graders. Sierra planned an engaging lesson where students built a shelter for an abominable snowman.

Academic Decathlon
Hamilton High's academic decathlon team once again upheld their reputation as one of the top progroms in the State, by winning the final tournament to determine the regional competition. Students competed on college-level material in seven core subjects in addition to delivering both a prepared and an impromptu speech, participating in an interview, and writing an essay. Their thematic topic this year is "Health and Wellness" with a science focus on the biology of cancer.

Feeding the Future
Congratulations to Mateline (Matty) Pace who took 1st place and a $5,000 scholarship in the statewide Feeding the Future 2020: School Lunch-Inspired Bites and Beverages competition on January 11! Students in the competition worked with a local chef to create school lunches that were appealing and desirable, while meeting nutritional and budgetary restrictions of the National School Lunch Program. Each team spent months testing and costing recipes with the help of Blue Watermelon Project chefs to better understand the challenge schools face everyday: how to provide delicious, nutritious and affordable lunches to students. Congratulations to Hamilton senior Devrath Iyer who was named a Top 300 scholar in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2020 -- one of only three from Arizona -- in recognition for his science project titled "Automatically Analyzing Open-Ended Survey Responses using Statistical and Machine Learning Methods". The Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation's oldest and most prestigious STEM competition, "provides students a national stage to present original research and celebrates the hard work and novel discoveries of young scientists who are bringing a fresh perspective to significant global challenges." Scholars hail from 192 American and international high schools in 39 states and Guam. They were selected from 1,993 applications received from 659 high schools across 49 states, and chosen based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists. Perry High School students from Caryn Butler graphic design 2 class won awards in the Town of Gilbert's Sustainability Artwork contest. Brooklyn Braaten was awarded third place, and Jill Syphus and Caitlin Salanga each were awarded first place in different categories. The first place winners' artwork along with their names and school will be displayed on the solidwaste trucks used by the town. In addition, each student won an Amazon gift card.

COLTure Day at Casteel
The second annual diversity program was held November 1 at Casteel High. Under the direction of Bonnie McNamara, French Honors Society and French Club puts on the program for National French Week every year. This year, it was nicknamed the COLTure Day because they celebrated all the cultures of the Casteel Colts! They had Choir, Band, Project 15 dance, Asian K-Pop and Fan Dances, Folklórico and even a song in German. Exchange students from Norway, Denmark and Spain also shared their experiences.

The 2019 World Language Expo was an awesome display of students' talent and hard work. Thanks to Gigi Clara-Martinez, Evelyn Avitia Valverde, and Breiddy Guerrero for organizing the event and to everyone who performed on stage, or offered cultural activities, food, and fun. This year's theme was "BE KIND. THE WORLD NEEDS YOU," and CHS's World Language students and teachers decorated the courtyard with posters and crafts.

Congratulations to Hamilton seniors Emily Abraham, Neya Balakrishna, Julia Fletcher, Margaret Han, Devrath Iyer, Sung Won Kim, Nivea Krishnan, Jihyun Lee, Chloe Leff, Ashley Lepham, Rebecca Li, Elissa Matlock, Burke Peterson, Rohan Sathe, Dev Singhania, Vaishalini Sitaraman, Kevin Tang, Antonio Valdez, Kevin Wang, Sherry Wang, Karina Yang, Sarah Zhang and Vivian Zhao who have been named National Merit Semifinalists based on last year's PSAT NMSQT scores. About 1.6 million students in some 22,000 high schools enter the National Merit Scholarship competition annually when they take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Semifinalists are the highest-scoring program entrants in each state and represent the top 0.5% of the state's senior students.

Dia de los Muertos
All nine Perry High Spanish teachers and their combined 1,200 students celebrated and learned about all the cultural components of Dia de los Muertos. The students rotated classes/teachers every 20 minutes into a new station to learn something different relating to Dia de los Muertos. The product can be seen on the two wall alters in the upstairs new C-wing. The Spanish teachers put in many hours to prepare for this event and the students enjoyed the cultural experience.

For the second time in Perry High's history, The Precedent student newspaper, under the direction of Damien Tippett, won first place in Arizona for General Excellence. The award is journalism's version of a state championship, and was presented at the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association fall convention. The newspaper won 29 awards for writing, design, cartoons and photography; congratulations goes out to Vivian Duong, Anna Myers, Kenna Cassey, River Bradshaw, Nadine Loureiro, Isabel Behrendt, Grant Sands, Holly Olaszak, Aeneas Zobel, Rhaelyn Mehan and Mea Griffen!
