Arizona College Prep - Erie Campus - (2019-2020) The following 12 Knights have earned the title of Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship program, based on their 2018 PSAT/NMSQT scores: Parsa Amini, Ian Booth, Angelina Brasen, Jon-Luc Bryant, Junyi Gao, Mia Gomez, Matthew Kearney, Dawson Moulesong, Ivy Nguyen, Thomas Obrenovich, Michelle Yao, and Natasha Zimmerman. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scores out of 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2018 exam.
Arizona College Prep - Erie Campus - (2019-2020) Publishers of "The American Srbobran," the longest-running, continually published Serbian newspaper worldwide, selected an article by ACP's Katarina Marceta to publish. Her article highlighted another ACP Erie student, Adriana Kangrga, who spent the summer performing traditional Serbian dances across southeastern Europe. Katarina is the Editor-in-Chief of ACP Erie's "Knight Times" student-led newspaper and loves bringing words to life through journalism. Chandler High - (2019-2020) Congratulations to Katherine Chou and Sydney Chun (Chandler High/Chandler Online Academy) who have been named National Merit Semifinalists based on last year's PSAT NMSQT scores. About 1.6 million students in some 22,000 high schools enter the National Merit Scholarship competition annually when they take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Semifinalists are the highest-scoring program entrants in each state and represent the top 0.5% of the state's senior students.
Arizona College Prep - Erie Campus - (2019-2020) Halloween is definitely near -- but students had so much fun assembling the skeleton in Rachna Nath's Human Bio class.
Arizona College Prep - Erie Campus - (2019-2020) ACP Erie's Lemelson-MIT team, the KNIGHTS INNOVATORS, presented their Hydrothermal Hat/Headband to the CEO of Chandler Innovations, Mrs. Daina White. Mrs. White invited the team to attend the Track 1 program that the City of Chandler sponsors in collaboration with NACET (Northern Arizona Center for Emerging Technologies) for starting their own entrepreneurship. These ACP students will now be able to access technical support, marketing support, patent support and meet with some of the top businessmen in Arizona to support their cause. The Knights Innovators started their track last Tuesday at Chandler Innovations in Downtown Chandler. This group consists primarily of freshman and sophomores. Hamilton High - (2019-2020) During an afternoon ceremony, Hamilton High students Zana Ryan, editor; and Nolen Coley, cinematographer; earned a student production Rocky Mountain Emmy Award by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences from their work in the category of "High School Student Craft Editor" for their Hamilton High track promotional video.
Basha High - (2019-2020) Keith Tomaszewicz's engineering classes took a field trip in September to Grand Canyon University to participate in Engineering GCU DAY. Students were exposed to different engineering programs and career options, and got to do a hands-on workshop with breadboards and electronic circuits to operate autonomous robots and a laser beam. Additionally, they went on a tour of the engineering labs and reviewed the engineering curriculum that GCU offers. Actual GCU engineering students also took Mr. Tomaszewicz's 2nd and 3rd year students around the campus to show them what campus life is like. GCU Engineering Day Photo Album
Casteel High - (2019-2020) Casteel High students attended the National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Arizona State Summit at ASU on September 12 to elevate our school's commitment to scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship.
Casteel High - (2019-2020) Casteel High teacher Christopher James was interviewed by his U.S. Military students (class) about his experiences serving in Iraq. The Veterans Heritage Project was on campus to record the interview and discuss the upcoming publication of the interview. Casteel sophomore, Sydnee Watkins will write the story to be published in the Library of Congress and the Veterans Heritage Project Book. Furthermore, James encouraged other students, including sophomore Hope Henry, to interview and write a story about a family member who served and can share their experiences as well. Hope is interviewing her grandfather about his experiences in the Vietnam War and will have the interview and story published.
Chandler High - (2019-2020) Chandler High's Air Force JROTC visited iFLY indoor sky diving last Monday and engaged in lessons on physics and wind tunnels and how terminal velocity can be calculated using a Algebraic equation. Cadets then suited up, received flight lessons, and had two flights in the flight chamber. After their flights, the cadets calculated their terminal velocity and came up with figures very close to what their true number was. It was a very rewarding experience.
Hamilton High - (2019-2020) Hamilton High School is currently piloting an AP course developed through a partnership between the CollegeBoard and the African Diaspora Consortium: AP Seminar with African Diaspora content. This is the first ever AP course with an African topic, and Hamilton is proud to be the first school in the western US to offer this course. The Senior Executive Director of the African Diaspora Consortium, Rhonesha Blaché, visited with the class and facilitated a lesson about changing perceptions of Africa. Hamilton students have also had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Adama Sallu as a guest speaker and attending a 1619 commemoration event during which Dr. Sallu was a panelist. A university partnership is also a part of this pilot program, so students will have opportunities for field trips to ASU and graduate student mentorship as they conduct research.
Perry High - (2019-2020) Dr. Darren Johnson's Sports Medicine students participated in a program called "Stop the Bleed" in partnership with Dignity Health. The program teaches students to tie a tourniquet, recognize arterial bleeds and other lacerations, stuff deep puncture wounds, and apply direct pressure to any bleeding. It includes vocabulary, explanation of wounds, pictures, and then a hands-on session. Congratulations to all students who completed the training and earned "Stop the Bleed" certification.
Perry High - (2019-2020) Dr. Darren Johnson's and Rebecca Goetz's Sports Medicine students recently participated in CPR training in partnership with Dignity Health and earned their CPR certification.
Casteel High - (2019-2020) Congratulations to Ashlyn Drew who was named one of the Top 300 MASTERS (out of 2,348 nominees from across the U.S.) in the 2019 Broadcom MASTERS, a program of Society for Science & the Public. She and her science fair project, Heightened Hydroponics, will now compete to become one of 30 national finalists in the Broadcom competition. Chandler High - (2019-2020) Chandler High junior Andre Richardson has been selected to attend the Southwest Airlines 2019 Continuing the Legacy in Aviation (academy/program) at the Southwest HQ Campus in Dallas, Texas this October. In June, Andre was selected to attend a weeklong Aviation Career Education Academy and learned about the aviation field through tours and professional instructions. Andre received an award for outstanding graduate as well as the Top Flyer Award. Andre was recommended by his academy instructor to apply for the Southwest Airlines Continuing the Legacy in Aviation event that hosts students from all over the country. Andre's application was selected and he was awarded the all-expense paid trip for him and a parent to attend.
Chandler High - (2019-2020) Congratulations to Holly Hoogstra, Chandler High senior, who was recognized with the IB Student of the Year Award at the quarterly meeting of the Arizona International Baccalaureate Schools.
Perry High - (2019-2020) The Social Studies department at Perry High School is inaugurating a chapter of the Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society. Its namesake is John Prothro whose dedication to teaching social studies has impacted countless students over his 30+ years in the classroom. Advisors for the new honor society are Danielle Platt and Taryn Randall.

Chandler High - (2019-2020) Chandler High graduate Whitney Foster recently won third place in the world and first in the nation as a part of ASU's all-female robosub team at the Robonation International Competition in San Diego. The Si Se Puede Foundation, a valuable partner to CHS, was one of the founders of the WAVE Robotics Team. ABC Good Morning America: All-female robotics team wins major awards while slashing stereotypes of women, Latinos in STEM.
Arizona College Prep - Erie Campus - (2019-2020) The ACP Erie 2019-2020 Lemelson-MIT team met with Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke and presented their Hydro-hat proposal. This hat has temperature, humidity and pulse meters in the frame. The hat is made of a wicking material and communicates through the sensors via Bluetooth to an app on the users phone, reporting the level of heat stress the user is under. The aim of the project is to reduce heat stress and heat related illnesses in Arizona. It is so cool that even our district athletes can benefit from it. Chandler High - (2019-2020) Chandler FFA (Future Farmers of America) visited Knox Elementary School to teach Pre-Kindergartens about the letters C and D. Students were able to hold chicks, play chicken poop bingo, create a chicken while learning shapes, and read a book about cows.
Perry High - (2019-2020) Perry High math teacher Eric Rygiel organized a tutoring event for Algebra I students with the LINK Crew. The event was a huge success and had a turnout of more than 60 students.
Arizona College Prep - Erie Campus - (2019-2020) ACP Erie student Hannah Tsay entered the National History Day (NHD), a year-long academic program focused on historical research, interpretation and creative expression for 6th to 12th grade students. By participating in NHD, students become writers, filmmakers, web designers, playwrights and artists as they create unique contemporary expressions of history. Chandler High - (2019-2020) Congratulations to Holly Hoogstra, Chandler High senior, who was one of 32 students from around the country chosen to participate in the Economics for Leaders program conducted at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX in July. Holly was chosen for the program because of her excellent leadership potential.

Casteel High - (2019-2020) Casteel High's Michelle Capriotti was awarded the National Education Association: Global Learning Teaching Fellowship. She is one of 42 teachers from around the country who will travel to Washington D.C. this October and then to Peru next summer. They will be focusing on global learning and applying best practices to the classrooms and sharing with teachers from around the world their projects and research.
Chandler High - (2019-2020) Chandler Spanish teacher Sara Wyffels has been working with the Arizona K12 Center at Northern Arizona University as a member of the "Teacher Solutions Team." She has been a part of facilitating the Teacher Leadership Institute and this summer, they featured her as one of their 6 Teacher Spotlights for her work on "Excellence and Equity for All." Hamilton High - (2019-2020) Hamilton senior Devrath Iyer was selected to attend the prestigious Research Science Institute (RSI), jointly sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. RSI is an intensive, six-week program that gives students the opportunity to conduct original, cutting-edge science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) research in state-of-the-art university laboratories, hospitals and corporate research facilities in Boston and Cambridge, MA. His accomplishment was recognized by Hon. Andy Biggs, Arizona Representative, in the records of the 116th US Congress and by Governor Doug Ducey via a commendation from the State of Arizona.
Hamilton High - (2019-2020) Congratulations to Hamilton teacher Hilary Johannes who has authorship credit for Going Deeper with Self- and Peer Assessment Guide.
Chandler High - (2019-2020) Chandler High Juniors participated in Camp IB (International Baccalaureate) events and had a great time getting to know one another while receiving valuable information from Senior Diploma Candidates on topics related to negotiating the Creativity, Activity, Service Project (CAS Project) and IB Program survival skills.
Arizona College Prep - Erie Campus - (2019-2020) Mrs. Nath was awarded Honorable Mention for the Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators for the year 2019. She is one of only two people to have received this award from within the states of California, Nevada and Arizona and the first person to receive this award from Arizona since 2016. Chandler High - (2019-2020) Two Chandler High FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America)-Early Childhood teams competed at the National Competition in Anaheim, CA. Chandler's teams competed against the top two teams in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Stevie Garcia and Valerie Valdez won a silver medal in Chapter in Review . Paloma Ramirez and Marissa Palmerin won a silver medal for their Chapter Service Project: Yuda Bands.
Chandler High - (2019-2020) Chandler High's FFA Parliamentary Procedure Team won the State competition and will compete at Nationals in October in Indianapolis.
Chandler High - (2019-2020) Chandler High is one of three schools in the country to have its girls, boys and beach volleyball programs receive team academic recognition from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). The award honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that display excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. Chandler Girls Volleyball earned a 3.71 team GPA. Girls Beach had a 4.27 team GPA, and Boys Volleyball earned a 3.64 team GPA.
Chandler High - (2019-2020) Over 350 German language and science students, teachers, and experts on the matter of sustainability from Germany and the U.S. had the opportunity to come together in Chicago to attend the Goethe Institut's Sustainability Summit at Loyola University over Memorial Day weekend. Six Chandler High School German and Environmental Science students and their teachers, Melanie Mello and Russell Davis, were lucky recipients of a grant to participate in this summit.
Casteel High - (2019-2020) Alexis Ngo and Quincy Lee, upcoming seniors in our CTE Sports Medicine Program, competed at the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) International Leadership Conference (ILC) during the summer of 2019. This is the first time Casteel High has ever attended the highest competition for HOSA. Both ladies faced tough competition from around the country and world including China, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa.
