The Chandler High Treblemakers and Men's Choir traveled to Jacksonville, FL in January to compete at the 2020 Midwinter Youth Chorus Festival. Both choirs, directed by Ms. Lori Lyford, won their divisions! Midwinter is a prestigious event that brings thousands of Barbershoppers together from around the world.

Congratulations to Kiley Park, AP 3D Art student, who won first place in the town of Gilbert's Sustainability Art Contest. Her sculpture (see photo) addresses issues surrounding recycling and the detrimental effects of garbage on wildlife. She won an Amazon gift card, and an image of her artwork will be displayed on Gilbert recycling trucks with her name and "Perry High School!"

Out of almost 80 entries, ALL first place winners in the Town of Gilbert 2019 High School Sustainability Artwork Contest were from Perry High School! Winners received recognition from the Town of Gilbert and an Amazon gift card. For over 30 years, Lions clubs around the globe have sponsored this international art contest to give children everywhere the chance to express their visions of peace and inspire the world through art and creativity. Turkey Donation
Modazz and the Chandler High Dance Department donated $750.00 in turkeys to the Chandler CARE Center for the holidays. The students and their dance teacher, Mrs. Kathie Buren, have been donating to the CARE center for nearly 30 years and have donated close to $13,000 in turkeys since 1991! Way to go!

She had her play directed by a professional director and performed for the 90 other schools present at the competition. State Thespian Conference
Chandler High's Theatre Troupe attended the two-day Arizona State Thespian Conference in downtown Phoenix featuring a main stage production, dozens of one-act performances, and attend workshops geared toward honing their craft. Students were able to meet and collaborate with students from all over the state. CHS's APAC (Advanced Pantomime and Characterization) students took home a Superior Rating for their One Act titled, "Hammered: A Thor and Loki Play," one of our tech teams came home with 2nd place in one of the Tech Challenges, and 2 of our seniors took home 2 of 6 available scholarships. Nainoa Aguano won a $1,500 scholarship for his monologue/song audition, and Theo McEntire won a $1,500 scholarship for an essay he wrote about why he wants to be a theatre teacher. Additionally, EJ Newton, along with Nainoa Aguano and Theo McEntire, auditioned for college scholarships and were called back by several colleges who are interested in having them attend their schools.

Choir Concert
Chandler High School's "Step Up" choir concert, under the direction of Lori Lyford, with neighboring junior high and elementary schools (Andersen Junior High, Willis Junior High, Andersen Elementary, Conley Elementary, CTA Goodman, CTA Liberty, Hartford, Knox Gifted Academy, Sanborn Elementary, and San Marcos Elementary) was a wonderful experience for all the students.

Modazz
Chandler High's Modazz won first place in a Choreography Competition! Scottsdale Community College (SCC) has selected a piece that Angelina Flores choreographed, and Modazz will be performing this dance in the SCC dance performance in December. The dancers will take class, set light cues, participate in a photo shoot, perform in two performances, and be part of a question and answer session with the audience at the conclusion of each performance.

The Great Gatsby
CHS Theatre's production of The Great Gatsby was superb! The play, directed by Ms. Stephanie Likes and Ms. Katie Kolacki, featured Elijah Newton, Charlize Cornejo, Ryan Cogley, Drew Sedgley, Liz Del Vecchio, Izzy Stephens, Zac Denny, Luke Waxman and an awesome ensemble cast. Without the outstanding stage management and other crews, this production would not have been possible. Congratulations on a great show!

Hamilton Theatre
Hamilton Theatre won several state awards after their performance on May 24 at ASU Gammage. Our musical was in the top ten for the state for Best Musical, we won for Best Costumes, and Sophia Donnell won Best Lead Female. Sophia will go on to represent Arizona in New York City for the national competition, The Jimmy Awards. She won an all-expense paid trip for a training camp at NYU and then will perform in the same theatre as Lion King.

Jessica Zhang
Congratulations to Hamilton sophomore Jessica Zhang who was selected by the University of South Carolina as one of the 20 best young pianists from across the U.S. and has been invited to participate in the 17th annual Southeastern Piano Festival June 16-23. Participants will take daily lessons with university piano faculty, attend master classes with guest artists who are among the world's top pianists and practice up to five hours a day. The festival culminates with the Arthur Fraser International Piano Competition featuring $9,000 in cash prizes. Jessica has studied piano since the age of six and has won multiple piano awards. Casteel Chorale in New York
Casteel High's chorale students recently traveled to New York with their teacher, Cami Clausen. They were participated in a private clinic with a cast member from Mean Girls (Broadway show) who taught them a dance combo and a Broadway music director who gave Broadway tips and taught harmonies from the show. They performed at Queen's College for an adjudication panel who gave Casteel a 98/100 and said they had "something special." They performed with other top choirs from around US and Canada in a Nationals choir at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Dr. Z Randall Stroope.

Destinee McCaster
SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Destinee McCaster is heavily involved in both school and community theatre, winning Superiors and several first places for group, duo and solo performances and directing. Destinee placed first at the Chandler Film Festival for her Public Service Announcement. Her college submission short film on mental health won several awards. She is currently serving as president for both Drama Club and Film Club, as well as vice president of Urban Lemmings, an improv troupe. Ellen Napolitano
SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Ellen Napolitano won the 2018-2019 Jerome McDonough Arizona State Playwright competition. She is the current president of National Charity League (NCL) San Tan Chapter and has been an NCL volunteer for six years. Ellen attended Teen Leadership Academy her junior year and had the opportunity to intern with the Chandler Mayor for a week. Ellen represented Hamilton at Arizona Girls State this year.
