Several Spanish students from ACP Oakland attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2018 National Spanish Examinations. They earned a total of 37 gold (must have scored in the 95th percentile or higher in nation), 50 silver (must have scored between the 94th -85th percentile in nation) and 76 bronze medals (must have scored between 84th -75th percentile in nation) along with over 50 percent of the students earning honorable mentions. "Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious," said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, "because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 146,000 students participating in 2019." Congratulations to Hamilton sophomore Jessica Zhang who was selected by the University of South Carolina as one of the 20 best young pianists from across the U.S. and has been invited to participate in the 17th annual Southeastern Piano Festival June 16-23. Participants will take daily lessons with university piano faculty, attend master classes with guest artists who are among the world's top pianists and practice up to five hours a day. The festival culminates with the Arthur Fraser International Piano Competition featuring $9,000 in cash prizes. Jessica has studied piano since the age of six and has won multiple piano awards. Chandler Fire Department presented a Heroism Award to Basha sixth grader Kaden Brimhall. Due to his quick actions, Kaden was able to pull the granddaughter of Patterson Elementary first grade teacher Heather Ackerman from a pool and saved her life. Additionally, $1,000 worth of swim lessons are being offered for free and a pool fence is being installed at someone's house, both in his honor. He was also given the "Golden Rule Student of the Month" award by Agree.

She has helped to develop the DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) program on ACP's campus and is currently a DECA State Officer. Competing at both state and national levels, she has earned 1st place in Buying and Merchandising Operation Research Event at the State Career Development Conference. To put Kenny's achievement in perspective, of the more than 2 million students who took the exam nationally last year, only 2,760 achieved a perfect score. Koen Symalla
SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Koen Symalla came to Chandler Early College as a freshman and has been a consistent performer academically as well as a model citizen representative of the student body. In addition to CEC, Koen has attended East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) for the last year, studying Emergency Medicine. Recently, he and a partner competed in the Emergency Medical Technician portion of the Arizona HOSA Competition. The event consisted of two rounds. The first round involved a multiple choice and written test. In the second round, the two showcased their hands-on skills. Not only did the pair score the highest written score of the event, but the duo ultimately took 1st place overall in the state. The pair will now head to Orlando in June for the HOSA International Leadership Conference. After high school, Koen plans on attending the Pima Medical Institute to become a paramedic. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Carson Beck was busy last summer learning to fly. He was one of 120 student cadets from around the world accepted into the inaugural class of the U.S. Air Force Flight Academy, where he earned a pilot's license. Carson was awarded the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Cadet of the Year for Arizona. He is currently a unit commander in JROTC. In addition, Carson is busy serving as Executive Officer of fundraising for Hamilton's Student Government and worked as President of LINK Crew for the past two years. In his free time, he has managed to earn the highest rank in Boy Scouts, the prestigious Eagle Scout. Carson will be attending the University of Colorado Boulder on a Marine ROTC Scholarship. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Destinee McCaster is heavily involved in both school and community theatre, winning Superiors and several first places for group, duo and solo performances and directing. Destinee placed first at the Chandler Film Festival for her Public Service Announcement. Her college submission short film on mental health won several awards. She is currently serving as president for both Drama Club and Film Club, as well as vice president of Urban Lemmings, an improv troupe. She is the current president of National Charity League (NCL) San Tan Chapter and has been an NCL volunteer for six years. Ellen attended Teen Leadership Academy her junior year and had the opportunity to intern with the Chandler Mayor for a week. Ellen represented Hamilton at Arizona Girls State this year. Tyler Christensen
SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Tyler Christensen is one of only handful of students in the state who have been selected through audition as a four-year All-Stater for choir. He is the number one bass in the state this year. He plans to pursue music in college. Tyler is a hard worker and a gifted teacher. He currently student-teaches the junior high advanced choir, and they respond very well to his leadership, humor, and musical know-how. Tyler has held a leading role in every musical during his 4 years here. He is a gifted actor in our company theatre program and is also is a successful playwright. Tyler served as the Casteel marching band's drum major (conductor) during his sophomore year. He plays several instruments and is an all-around top-notch musician and performer. Additionally, Zachary was one of three drummers nationwide selected to participate in Berkley's College of Music Master Summit where he got to play with Jeff Coffin from the Dave Matthews band and also work with drummer Chester Thompson. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Over the past four years, Olivia Wang has been a part of National Honor Society and the Red Cross, UNICEF and Photography clubs. She has also been a part of the Hamilton girls tennis team. Outside of school, Olivia volunteers as a teacher assistant at Hope Chinese School on Saturdays, and she enjoys art, photography and playing tennis. Olivia earned the AP Distinguished Scholar award this year. Next year, Olivia plans to attend Barrett Honors College at ASU where she will major in Software Engineering. Hamilton Orchestra auditions were held for the 2019 Arizona All-State Orchestra. Hamilton orchestra students did well overall, with six accepted (Grace Zhang, Zocelyne Kow, Christine Lee, Brandon Tang, Ryan Widjaja and Colin Guan) and one first alternate. These exceptional musicians will participate in the upcoming festival at NAU, April 11-13. This achievement represents the highest honor an Arizona high school musician can earn.

SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Theodore "Teddy" Ruth has been a Chandler Early College student for the majority of his high school career. Teddy carries with him a solid 3.3 GPA and has been an active member of Student Council for the last two years. He is a past recipient of the CEC Character Award for Trustworthiness. He has been a student at EVIT for the last two years, studying Information Technology and Engineering Careers (iTEC). Recently, Teddy competed in the Interactive Media and Game Design Competition at the SkillsUSA Arizona Championships. He and his partner took first place in the state. In June, both will compete at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference competition in Kentucky. Upon graduation, Teddy will be attending Chandler Gilbert Community College before transferring to a four-year university to complete his bachelor's degree in either Computer Science or Computer Programming and Game Design. Kable Moore, Chandler High freshman, became the Trampoline and Tumbling State Champion in three events: Level 5 tumbling, Level 8 double mini and Level 8 trampoline. Kable's scores on double mini have earned him a spot at Junior Olympic Nationals in July.

Cienna Samiley
Cienna Samiley, CHS Junior, competed at the USA Gymnastics Region 1 Championships last weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. She competed against the top Junior Olympic level 10 gymnasts from California, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada in her age group. Cienna won the All-Around bronze medal after competing in all four events: Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, and Floor Exercise. Cienna's third place finish earned her a spot to compete at Junior Olympic nationals to be held next month in Indianapolis. The best level 10 gymnasts from across the country qualify to nationals. Basha students traveled to the FCCLA State Competition in Tucson with 1,200 students from around the state. Every student placed either first or second in the state in their event category, earning a total of 11 GOLD medals and 1 SILVER medal! We will represent CUSD and AZFCCLA in Anaheim, CA at the FCCLA National Competition this summer. Macy Parris, Wren Leon, Aliyah Cortez and Paige Silva
Congratulations to Macy Parris, Lauren "Wren" Leon, Aliyah Cortez and Paige Silva, students in the HHS Early Childhood Education (ECE) program and members of the Family Career and Community leaders of America (FCCLA). They traveled to Tucson to compete against other high schools across Arizona in the FCCLA State Leadership Conference and all earned GOLD Medals after earning the top scores in their competitive public speaking category division. Macy Parris presented about the importance of teaching young children and their families about proper nutritional habits and exercise to prevent the epidemic of childhood obesity in our country. Lauren "Wren" Leon, Aliyah Cortez and Paige Silva competed as a team about the importance of promoting language and literacy during the early childhood years to increase cognitive and brain development. Their hard work and dedication to their education should be recognized and applauded.

SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Hamilton High School Air Force Junior ROTC Cadet Jacob Posniack (12th) recently received a scholarship to attend one of eleven partnering universities participating in a private pilot license training program over the summer of 2019. Jacob is among 150 AFJROTC cadets around the world, and one of only five in Arizona to receive the scholarship from Headquarters AFJROTC. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Katie Pascavis is a 2019 Flinn Scholar who is passionate about serving others. She teaches younger students and leads community service efforts as President of Queen Creek 4-H Dog and STEM projects, President of County 4-H Dog Committee, and Vice President of National Honors Society.
