Weinberg Elementary - (2019-2020) Weinberg music teacher Matt Pitts was selected to present at the 2020 Arizona Music Educators Association Annual In-Service Conference to be held in January 2020. He will present on "Popular Media With Orff Schulwerk." Orff Schulwerk music and movement pedagogy contributes to development of the individual far beyond specific skills and understandings in the arts. These skills and procedures have a wider application and value in several areas: Intellectual, Social, Emotional, and Aesthetic. Weinberg Elementary - (2019-2020) Weinberg music teacher Matt Pitts (aka "MJ Pitty") teaches the Doubles Rap to kindergartners. Matt regularly partners with classroom teachers to reinforce academic skills with music. We are thrilled he is part of our Weinberg family! Weinberg Elementary - (2019-2020) Weinberg Elementary teachers were awarded EIGHT Cash for Classroom grants from Chandler Education Foundation (CEF). The grants will bring exciting and educational programs and materials to our students. The grants will fund Scholastic News, musical instruments, technology lessons, fractured fairy tales and more! A big THANK YOU to CEF and all the families who donated to the Cash for Classrooms fundraising efforts. Weinberg Elementary - (2019-2020) Congratulations to Mrs. Lisa Fink, Weinberg multi-age teacher, who was named Teacher of the Month for September by the Sun Lakes Rotary Club. To quote from her nomination letter, "Without fail, she is always willing to lend a hand, an idea, or just a listening ear." Weinberg Elementary - (2019-2020) Lizzie, one of Weinberg's D.I.G.S. (Dogs in Grade Schools) assist dogs knows how to play BINGO! She pulls the bingo ball, and the students use their reading skills to mark their game boards. Weinberg Elementary - (2019-2020) Weinberg student council had a service learning project at Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). FMSC collects donations to fund the meal ingredients. Volunteers hand-pack the meals. Meals are donated to FMSC food partners around the world, where kids are fed and lives are saved! Weinberg Elementary - (2019-2020) Weinberg first graders from Shannon Van De Beuken's class experienced what happens when music and reading collide. The story they read this week was all about music, and Mr. Pitts joined them to help teach the high frequency words while keeping the beat on their student-created drums. Weinberg Elementary - (2019-2020) Weinberg 3rd grade teachers attended a STEM training hosted by Salt River Project last Saturday. They built the winning sail for a boat! Weinberg Elementary - (2019-2020) Weinberg students and brothers, Palmer and Hudson Sparks, both play baseball in Gilbert American Little League. Each of their teams won first place for their respective divisions in Spring ball! Way to go, guys! Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Hailey Green of Miss Kilea Thomas's 5th grade class was honored as an April 2019 Town of Gilbert Student of the Month. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Weinberg held our first Literacy Day on Monday, May 13. Families and the community were invited to enjoy a variety of literacy based activities. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) The Chandler Chamber of Commerce surprised noontime aide Diana Perez on Friday, May 10 with the Support Staff of the Year award. She will be recognized at an awards dinner on May 31 at the Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Weinberg 6th grader Brooke Brenchley of Ms. Monica DaRugna's class was honored as a Town of Gilbert Student of the Month for March 2019. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Weinberg Elementary third graders in Juli Harpole's class were "Secret Agent Detectives" for testing. They created "clue" briefcases to help them remember how to find the clues in the AzMERIT test! Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Weinberg students Braden Martineau and Sophie Myers auditioned and were selected for the CUSD Elementary Honor Band! Sophie had the second highest score on bass clarinet, and Braden had the highest on tenor saxophone! Way to go, Wranglers! Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Kati Barrera and Karen Schwalenberg's 6th grade classes at Weinberg recently played a game of "Hot Lava." Hot Lava is a team building activity with an emphasis on communication. The object is to get their entire team across the lava field without burning up! The only way to get across is to use the special "lava-proof paper" provided. Students were in teams of 6 to 7 and provided with 8 pieces of paper. If anyone stepped off of the paper, the entire team had to start over. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Students in 3rd grade at Weinberg are creating SIP gardens (Subterranean Irrigated Planters). They are recycling plastic water bottles to hold and release water under the soil. They added tomatoes, basil, and other herbs they've been growing inside their classroom under lights for the last 2 months. This project was made possible by a grant from Chandler Education Foundation Cash for Classrooms campaign. It's exciting to learn where our food comes from, what plants need and what they give, how they fit into our environment, and how we can be good stewards of our Earth. They will continue studying plants using microscopes and monitoring them in our school's greenhouse. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Josh Brossman, 6th grader at Weinberg, was recognized by Gilbert Mayor Jenn Daniels as the January 2019 Student Citizen of the Month. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Weinberg staff didn't want the fun of the 100th day of school to end, so they celebrated the 101st day by dressing as the 101 Dalmatians. They even had a Cruella de Vil (kindergarten teacher, Jessica Murphy). Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) In December, Weinberg students traveled to Casa Grande to compete in the regional Mathleague competition. They did a great job with several winners in individual categories in grades 3, 4 and 6. Weinberg placed 2nd overall! Way to go, Wranglers!! Congratulations, Elizabeth! Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Weinberg 1st grade teacher, Jessica Johnson, was nominated for the Sun Lakes Rotary Club Teacher of the Month. Congratulations, Jessica! Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Mrs. Ryskamp's class worked on a unit regarding different holiday traditions. They talked about piñatas, and the students made their own piñata using tissue paper. They also watched a video of children breaking piñatas and singing traditional holiday songs. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Weinberg Elementary student, Braidi Glascock, was nominated as Gilbert Student of the Month and was recognized by Gilbert Mayor Jenn Daniels. Braidi is an outstanding Wrangler, and we are so proud of him. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Weinberg's Girl Scout Troop 1248 volunteered at the Chandler CARE center where 400 families were served Thanksgiving meals. We're so proud of our Wranglers! Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Students from Mrs. Zylstra (4th grade) and Mrs. Van De Beuken's (1st grade) classes had so much fun with their buddy classes! They did a STEM project to launch candy pumpkins using only popsicle sticks and rubber bands. Their ideas were very creative and successful! Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Congratulations to Weinberg Elementary teacher Nasreen Wahid who was one of four CUSD teachers who presented at the Arizona Health and Physical Education State Convention during the week of October 22. Their session was titled "CUSD PE TEACHERS are OPEN to Fitness!" Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Mr. Ball's 6th graders were given the challenge of building a geodesic dome using struts made from rolled-up newspaper and determining the strength-to-weight ratio of the resulting dome. They tested their design by stacking textbooks on their domes to see how much weight they could support. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) During the week of October 25, kindergarten celebrated the 50th day of school by dressing up in 50s style clothing. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Weinberg 4th graders took a fun and educational field trip to the Sonoran Desert Museum. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Weinberg first grade students performed songs about bedtime in a special musical performance arranged by Mrs. Douglas, first grade teacher, and Ms. Kenney, our music teacher. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Weinberg Elementary students participated in their Bubble Fun Run, a fund-raising effort organized by our fabulous PTO. Weinberg students raised almost $39,000! The money raised will be used for purchasing Computers on Wheels (COWS) and picnic tables for our courtyards. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Weinberg's P.E. teacher, Tania Hermreck, coordinated nutrition lessons presented by CUSD Food Services for our 5th and 6th grade students. The classes learned about healthy eating and the 5-A-Day of Fruits and Vegetables plan. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) To finish the quarter strong, Miss Thomas' class created board games that were tied to their book study of Frindle and in support of their lessons in ratios. The games created were then played on a game day earned through Fun Run fundraising efforts. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Weinberg Elementary students in Nasreen Wahid's technology class had a great time opening and seeing what the inside of computer looks like. Learning is so much more fun and meaningful when students can collaborate, experiment, test and examine things. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Mrs. Mathew enjoyed a picnic lunch with Ms. Pingel's kindergarten class. The class earned this by raising money for the annual Fun Run fundraiser. There are many more classes that will be eating with Mrs. Mathew, and she is so looking forward to the very interesting conversations with the students. Weinberg staff is very thankful for the community's help in raising funds for our school.
