• Welcome to Elementary Connect @ Chandler Online Academy

    COA Excellence Online

  • Elementary Connect was created to meet the needs of our learners both academically and socially.  The intent of the program is to try and replicate the experiences of a brick and mortar environment in an online setting to the best of our abilities.

We offer a variety of tracks to help meet all of our students needs including:

    • General Education
    • Gifted Education
    • Traditional Education (CTA Program)
    • Dual Language Immersion
    • Elite Performance Academy

Students will receive instruction in all content areas including:

    English Language Arts K-6

Reading skills will be developed utilizing quality literature and various expository texts combined with phonic skills and the conventions of writing. A strong emphasis will be placed on listening and reading comprehension, passage structures, and metacognition. Students will work both synchronously and asynchronously, as they will have the ability to self-pace through portions of the materials, as well as receive direct instruction from their facilitator.

    Mathematics K-6

The mathematics program utilized will include the mastery and practical application of basic mathematical principles. Students will use higher level thinking skills to solve conceptual problemsolving applications and engage in routines to support fluency and automaticity of concepts. The program offered will allow students to practice skills through interactive activities, simulations, and digital manipulatives. Students will work asynchronously towards mastery of skills and practices, while also engaging with the facilitator in whole group, small group, and one-on-one online opportunities.

    Science K-6

The science program will include application of scientific principals in the areas of physics, chemistry, life science, and earth and space sciences. Students will be offered opportunities to practice like a scientist through hands-on learning activities; think like a scientist to help apply the learning towards real-world examples; write like a scientist in a science notebook; and talk like a scientist to enhance and discuss newly acquired skills. Virtual fieldtrips and STEM careers will be highlighted as an additional application tool for science. Students will work through the material asynchronously but will have synchronous opportunities embedded throughout the program. Enrichment opportunities will be provided as ways for students to apply their learning to realworld scenarios.

    Social Science K-6

Social Science (labeled Social Studies in FVLS) will be addressed through a program that consists of the study of ancient history, American History, Arizona History, world history, and the foundational elements of the government. Geography will also be covered and may include the study of place, location, regions, relationships within places, and map skills appropriate to grade levels. Students will engage in a self-paced format with opportunities to engage with their classmates and teacher in synchronous environment when appropriate. Virtual field trips will be embedded within the experience, as well as career connections and real-world applications where applicable.

    Specials K-6

The K-6 specials are designed to be subjects for exploration. The special areas offered in Florida Virtual for K-6 are as follows:

Using the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, K-6 students enrolled in the FVLS art course will learn real art techniques through modeling and connect them to master artists. Students will develop their observational skills as they learn how to critique art while making cultural connections with works from around the world.

    Computer Science

Students taking the FVLS Elementary Computer Science courses will learn basic computer science skills, keyboarding, programming, and coding. Each of these skills is taught alongside meaningful technology topics such as tech safety, digital citizenship, bullying/cyberbullying, adaptive technology, social media, and robotics.

    Physical Education

Students taking the FVLS Physical Education courses will be jumping, dancing, swimming, throwing, catching, kicking, tumbling, and more. Students will learn about healthy lifestyle habits, teamwork, sportsmanship, goal setting, and strive for 60 minutes of daily activity.

The FVLS Elementary Spanish courses introduce students to both the Spanish culture and language. Each lesson is taught through the presentation of diverse stories that give students the opportunity to see and hear Spanish in an authentic and fun context. Activities include hearing, speaking, reading, writing, and recording the language to reinforce learning. Course Progression: FLVS offers a total of six online elementary Spanish courses, allowing students to progress through distinct levels – starting with Introductory Spanish and continuing through Levels 1-5. Students will be introduced to Spanish letters, pronunciation, and vocabulary. In more advanced levels, they will develop their grammar and writing skills. After a pretest and discussion with the teacher, students may advance to a higher level if they already have an existing level of Spanish proficiency.

    Special Education:

A special education teacher will be co-teaching and/or supporting the general education teacher utilizing teaching strategies and evidence based practices which engage the learner in the virtual setting.  Student will use both Florida Virtual School curriculum and specially designed instruction/resources housed within Google Classroom for the provision of a student’s free and appropriate public education under the IDEA.

     Gifted Education Track:

Teachers are encouraged to use the adopted gifted resources and, most importantly, utilize teaching strategies which engage the gifted learner to the virtual setting.  Students will use both Florida Virtual School curriculum and specialized gifted resources housed within Google Classroom.

    Traditional Academy Track:

Students who are enrolled in the CTA track will be placed in cohorts to allow for the conversations in the LIVE portions of the virtual learning environment to involve vocabulary and tasks aligned to CTA resources.  Both Saxon and Spalding will be added as a supplementary component of Elementary Connect. These resources will be used in addition to the self-paced content courses to provide consistency in CTA programming.  The course sequence will follow the model of the brick and mortar setting.
