Honors, Awards and Special Programs
Carlson Elementary - (2018-2019) Carlson Elementary Champions collaborated with the Chandler Police, Fire, and City to kick off the Relay for Life Fundraising. Carlson grade levels are collecting coins to help give the "boot" to Cancer. Mayor Kevin Hartke, Police Chief Sean Duggan and Fire Chief Tom Dwiggins all came out to talk to the kids about giving back. Additionally, Carlson Cancer survivors were honored. The Carlson Kindness Club, in conjunction with PTO and the Chandler Police are coordinating this great effort.
Carlson Elementary - (2018-2019) The Sun Lakes Rotary last week honored Kim Shuck from Carlson Elementary as teacher of the month for March. She received a framed certificate, a $100 personal award from the Sun Lakes Rotary and an additional $100 from Trust Bank to be used in her classroom.
Carlson Elementary - (2018-2019) Carlson 6th grader Talynn Ellsworth competed recently in the regional MatchCounts competition and performed so well she was invited to compete in the State Competition in Mesa on March 30. Congratulations, Talynn! MATHCOUNTS Competition Series website
Carlson Elementary - (2018-2019) The Arizona Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and the Council of Administrators of Special Education (CASE), gave Carlson Elementary Principal Leo Schlueter the 2019 AZCASE Outstanding Leadership Award. This award is given to a person who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in supporting special education and/or inclusive programming. It is intended for an individual who has demonstrated leadership qualities and who has accomplished something of significance making a difference for students with disabilities. Congratulations Leo!
Carlson Elementary - (2018-2019) Carlson Elementary fifth graders in Nicole Bruder's class and first graders in Michelle Lester's class collected pajamas for Scholastic's pajama drive. Additionally, the Carlson student council collected toys for the Hartford Sylvia Encinas Toy Drive.
Carlson Elementary - (2018-2019) The Carlson Orchestra led by Mrs. Barney, along with other CUSD schools, marched in the Gilbert Days Parade showcasing their musical talents.
Carlson Elementary - (2018-2019) Carlson Elementary fourth grade teacher, Julie Malizia, was awarded the Silver Apple from Channel 3 for her outstanding teaching. Carlson Elementary - (2018-2019) Carlson Elementary fifth graders, under the guidance of volunteers from Sun Lakes Rotary Club and students from ASU, assembled a balloon motor and added to the chassis they built last week. Next, they will test their engines and make adjustments to see how far their car will go. (Materials donated by GM and SAE).
Carlson Elementary - (2018-2019) A World In Motion STEM Program is pleased to partner with our 5th grade each Friday to plan, build, and test jet toy balloon cars. Carlson Elementary - (2018-2019) Carlson 5th Graders Parker Rahn and Ryan Sanchez were part of the the Chandler Stars -- one of 32 teams that played in the 10U division of the Extreme Diamond Sports (XDS) World Series in San Diego from July 23rd-July 28th. The Chandler Stars battled against several of the top teams in the country, finished the tournament 7-0, and are the undefeated XDS World Series Champions! XDS Baseball World Series Results
Carlson Elementary - (2017-2018) On Wednesday April 18th, the Arizona Educational Foundation (AEF) announced that Carlson Elementary was selected to receive the coveted A+ School of Excellence ™ award for the 2017-2018 academic year. Carlson Elementary - (2017-2018) ...however, our kids talk about Carlson frequently and the friendships and teachers they met because it was such a great school. I honestly believe that an environment and atmosphere of a school (or any place for that matter), comes from the top down. Carlson was such a great school. From the communication, great teachers and curriculum, the open arms mentality with parent volunteers, and even the emphasis that was put on character development is something that I don't see often in schools."

Around this time of year many of us begin to think about the things we are/were grateful for and Carlson was certainly one of them! Carlson Elementary - (2017-2018) The 5th grade at Carlson collected 70 sets of pajamas for the Pajama Program that provides pajamas to families in need.
Carlson Elementary - (2017-2018) Congratulations to Carlson 6th grade teacher Mrs. Bender who was awarded a grant from the Chandler Education Foundation for the purchase of science materials to study water.
Carlson Elementary - (2017-2018) Congratulations to Carlson kindergarten teachers Ms. Denardis and Mrs. Lynch who were awarded a grant of funds from the Chandler Education Foundation to purchase class sets of Ozobots (mini computers to teach coding skills).
Carlson Elementary - (2017-2018) Carlson Chorus was invited to perform for at the Chandler Veteran's Day Event at Veteran's Oasis Park.
Carlson Elementary - (2017-2018) Carlson Elementary honored its veterans by having a flag raising ceremony on November 9th. Veterans were welcome to attend and partake in the ceremony followed by refreshments in the main hallway afterward.
Carlson Elementary - (2017-2018) Congratulations to Carlson 5th grader Dhane Meyers who made the All American 11U Baseball Team and has been selected to play at the ESPN World of Sports Complex to represent the Far West Region.
Carlson Elementary - (2016-2017) Principal Leo Schlueter was awarded Administrator of the Year from the Chandler Chamber of Commerce.
Carlson Elementary - (2016-2017) Congratulations to Carlson students Taylor Drewry who took 3rd place for third grade girls division and Cody Kostoryz who took 1st place for fifth grade boys division at the Running Club Cross Country Invitational at Casteel High School.
Carlson Elementary - (2016-2017) Carlson teacher Kathy Lynch was honored as the Teacher of the Month for January by the Sun Lakes Rotary Club.
Carlson Elementary - (2016-2017) Carlson students Matthew Wallace, Ryan Williams, together with students from Ryan, Hull and Santan Elementary schools, are representing the City of Chandler as members of a 10U baseball team hosting/playing against a visiting team from Tainan City, Taiwan. Some of the boys' families have been hosting two Taiwanese boys at their homes all week, as well. All of the boys were honored at the City Council meeting on 12/6.
Carlson Elementary - (2016-2017) Congratulations to Carlson students Ruby Peterson and Haley Fichiera who medaled in the Arizona State Level 4 Gymnastics Meet. Haley took 3rd all around, and Ruby took 5th place all around.

Carlson Elementary - (2016-2017) 6th Grade Carlson student Malaq Ali won First Place in Basic Freeskate Level 4 at the annual Arizona Ice Classic Competition on August 6th, 2016.
Carlson Elementary - (2015-2016) Congratulations to Carlson's 3rd - 4th Grade CSL basketball team that won 1st place in their tournament.
Carlson Elementary - (2015-2016) Jack Bosch, a 5th grader in Mrs. Bruder's Class, ended the 2015-16 school year earning in excess of 8 million words read with the AR program.
Carlson Elementary - (2015-2016) The Carlson Elementary staff were once again recognized for having zero fire violations for the 2015-16 school year. This was their second year in a row for being recognized.
Carlson Elementary - (2015-2016) The Carlson First Lego League Robotics placed 3rd in the regional competition in November and moved onto the state competition at Arizona State University in December.
Carlson Elementary - (2015-2016) Carlson Students participated in the Boosterthon Fun Run raising in excess of $30K to be used for the purchase of wireless technology for classrooms.
Carlson Elementary - (2014-2015) Seven Carlson Elementary teachers and Principal Leo Schlueter were dumped with Ice Water as incentive for PTO exceeding their Check-A-Thon fundraiser; they collected more than $28,000.
Carlson Elementary - (2014-2015) Graham Fawson, a Navarrete sixth grader, played in a piano recital at Carnegie Hall on Saturday. Graham qualified through an international music competition called American Protege. In both of those he was a second-place winner. Arizona Department of Education

Carlson Elementary - (2013-2014) The Carlson PTO is awesome in so many ways! Watching them give so much time to every aspect that goes on at Carlson is beyond words: fundraising, student of the month (lunch time ice cream treats) organized in shifts, teacher lunches, appreciation dinners, Running Club, Field Day, Jamba Juice, Birthday Club and many, many more!
