    THE ABC’S of MRS. COAKLEY’S 5th GRADE

    ABSENCES

If your student is absent unexpectedly, I will prepare his/her makeup work from the day and send it home with a note on the day of his/her return.  I do not always send home everything that was missed because some activities are done as class work/centers/workshop.  I will make sure that all skills are covered.

    BACKPACKS

Please send your student to school with a backpack each day.  Students will need to be able to carry papers and supplies to and from school each day.

    BIRTHDAYS

Birthdays are very special for 5th graders!  Please feel free to send in store bought treats for your student’s birthday.  Unfortunately,  homemade treats are not allowed per district policy.  Please let me know in advance if you plan to do so, and we will celebrate your student’s day at the end of the day.  If your child has a summer birthday, I would be more than happy to celebrate for him/her on a half-birthday or an alternate date.  Just contact me to make plans.

    BOOK ORDERS

I will be sending home book orders periodically.  There will be more information on how to order attached to them.  Book orders are a great way to get quality books at low prices and keep your student interested in reading.  They are all optional, so you may choose when to purchase/not purchase.

    CONFERENCES

The school district requires that we schedule two conferences each year.  There will be a one-on-one parent teacher conference scheduled with each family at the middle of the 1st quarter and then again in the middle of 3rd quarter. Although there are only two mandatory conferences, I am happy to schedule conferences at any point during the year.  Just let me know when you need to talk, and I will give you some open times for that week.  I feel that communication is a vital part of the education process, so please feel free to contact me.

    CONTACTING ME

You may contact me at any time with questions/concerns/etc.  Please do not hesitate to ask me something or get clarification, etc.  I am here as a resource for you, as well as your student.  I am happy to answer any questions and help in any way possible.

    School Phone: 480-883-4800

    Voicemail Extension: 480-883-4836

    E-mail: coakley.michele@cusd80.com

If you need to reach me at the beginning of a school day, the fastest way is to send a note with your child.  I try to periodically check for e-mails throughout the day.  However, with our busy schedule, time does not always permit me to do so.  I will always get back to you at the soonest time possible.

    DROP-OFF/PICK-UP

Students may be dropped off anytime after 8:10 a.m.  There are no adults on duty prior to this time.  Students can be picked up at 3:05 in front of the school office.  When you pull through the circle, please remain in your car.  There will be people on duty to assist students while getting into cars.  By remaining in your car, the teachers are able to keep the traffic flow moving more effectively.

    FIELD TRIPS

There are several field trips during the year.  I will send home a permission slip stating where we will be going, if a sack lunch is needed and how many volunteers may accompany us.  If I have more volunteers than we can take, I will draw names and contact you.  This is a great way to spend the day with your child and their friends.

    LUNCH

Students may bring lunch from home, or purchase a lunch from the cafeteria.  If your student plans to buy lunch, please put money on his/her lunch account before school.  You may send money/check with your child and I will forward it to the cafeteria.  Please place the money in an envelope with child’s name, Mrs. Coakley and amount on the envelope.  You may also access www.mylunchmoney.com and manage your child’s lunch account on line.

    NEWSLETTER / E-ALERTS

I will be updating my website approximately once a week.  I will include upcoming events, class activities and any thing special in our classroom.  If you do not have e-mail I will make sure that you are informed of any information.

    SNACK

Students will be given a snack break each day.  They may bring a healthy, non-liquid snack from home.   Snacks need to be easy to eat, non messy (ie.Top-Ramen) that allow us to continue to work.

    TARDIES

If your student is tardy, he/she MUST stop by the front office before reporting to our room.  He/she will be given a tardy slip to bring to me so that I know he/she is officially checked in for the day.  School starts at 8:30, and attendance is taken as part of our morning routine.  Please be sure to follow the tardy policy to insure your student’s safety.

    TRANSPORTATION

It is extremely important that I always have an updated note about your child’s transportation to and from school.  If at any point during the year you need to change your child’s transportation, please notify me so that I can insure that he/she gets to the appropriate place on time.  You may add/delete people authorized to take your student home from school in the front office.  This can only be done by the parent/guardian.

    VOLUNTEERS

If at any time you are coming to school to volunteer, please sign in at the front office first.  You will receive a nametag to wear while you are here, and this lets the adults on campus know that you are an approved visitor.  This procedure is for your students’ safety, so please be sure to stop by the office on your way in for any kind of event or volunteering.  Thank you for your help.

    WATER BOTTLES

It is a great idea to send your student to school with a water bottle.  There is a designated spot for students to keep their bottles, and they will be able to get drinks as needed.  It’s important to keep hydrated here in AZ!  J  We also have a drinking fountain in class.  Please DO NOT send in Starbucks or sodas. Students will only be permitted to bring water into the room.  We are really still trying to keep our carpet clean!
