My name is Lori August and I am thrilled to be teaching 3rd grade here at Hull Elementary. I have been at Hull since it opened in 2001, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
My Education and Professional Background
I graduated from the University of Arizona in 1994 and have been teaching ever since-Go Wildcats! Five years later, I received my Master's Degree from NAU. Becoming a teacher was a childhood fantasy for me, and after all these years in the classroom, I still can't imagine doing anything else.
My Educational Philosophy
I believe in a balanced approach to teaching. Balancing techniques, timing, and amounts of engagement are critical to students' learning. Primary aged students can sit still for short periods of time, so varying of activities is vital. I take a balanced approach to reading and mathematics instruction as well. Some students learn best with phonics, while others learn best with whole language strategies. For this reason, I incorporate as many different strategies I can to ensure that each student is getting what they need. In math, traditional algorithms as well as manipulative based strategies are taught. Students learn the 'how' and the 'why it works' in order to achieve mastery of the content. Lastly, I believe that students will work well for teachers who respect them. I enjoy building a rapport with students that allows them to feel comfortable to learn and make mistakes.
