    Welcome!

Welcome to the Reading Nook where readers get hooked on books! Students work in small groups to receive specialized instruction to meet their reading goals based on benchmark and progress monitoring data. Various multi-sensory and hands-on activities are used to review, re-teach, remediate, and/or reinforce concepts taught in the general education classroom. Direct instruction using a research-based, systematic curriculum is implemented to provide intensive intervention to help maximize children's success. Engaging strategy-based instruction is also incorporated to help children progress with literacy. We work on phonological awareness (listening to sounds in words),decoding words (reading), and encoding words (spelling).

    My Education and Professional Background

I have been growing my reading expertise for over 20 years.  I earned my Elementary Education degree from Blackburn College and Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Northern Arizona University.  I am trained in several research-based literacy programs such as the Wilson Language System and am a certified Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner.  I also hold Reading Specialist, Early Childhood, Media Specialist and English as a Second Language endorsements.  Additionally, I am an Arizona Dyslexia Training Designee.

    My Educational Philosophy

I believe that every student is a unique individual academically and emotionally. Each student is the leader of his/her goal setting and learning achievement. It is my responsibility, as an educator, to guide and provide students with the necessary academic tools for them to attain success in reading.
