Welcome!

Hello! My name is Jackie Hernandez and I am your child's kindergarten teacher! I am very excited to be teaching kindergarten for the 4th year in a row at Shumway. I grew up in Barrington, IL (a northwest suburb of Chicago) and moved to Chandler in June of 2015 with my husband. When I am not teaching, I enjoy reading, working out and keeping fit, and spending time with my husband, family, and friends. I also love taking our dogs to the dog park and for walks around our neighborhood.

My Education and Professional Background

I have a degree in elementary education, with specializations in early childhood education and reading education from the University of Iowa. I earned my master’s degree in reading education from National-Louis University. I am also National Board certified in the area of early and middle childhood/literacy: reading language arts. This year will be my fourteenth year of teaching! My teaching history includes working as a teacher's aide in a self-contained special education classroom, working as a library resource teacher, teaching sixth grade, and teaching kindergarten.

My Educational Philosophy

I believe every child can learn and deserves the best education based on what they need to become successful and responsible life-long learners. My job is to provide a safe and fun environment where children are free to take risks, while enjoying the learning process. I will strive to teach my students the important components of the kindergarten curriculum at Shumway Leadership Academy, while also inspiring them to love learning.
