Welcome!

Hello Friends! I'm so glad you came by to visit our class website. Here you can find out all of the exciting things we are doing in our First Grade classroom in the Chandler Unified School District at Shumway Elementary School in Chandler, Arizona.

My Education and Professional Background

I have been teaching for early childhood education 12 years. While attending Arizona State University, I had the opportunity to teach preschool. I started teaching two year olds and then the following semester I assisted teaching four year olds. I absolutely fell in love with the way they saw the world when I introduced new things! Once I graduated from Arizona State University, I couldn't wait to teach the primary grades. It was why I went back to school! I was lucky to find a position at Shumway teaching preschool in the morning and kindergarten in the afternoon. I taught full-day kindergarten for 5 years and this is my eighth year teaching first grade! I strive to make learning successful for each child. It is fun to watch the growth the students make in just one year!

My Educational Philosophy

I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire as a educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. There are three elements that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment, (1) the teacher acting as a guide, (2) allowing the child's natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, and (3) promoting respect for all things and all people.

Welcome!

Welcome to Kindergarten! I am so pleased that your child will be part of our leaders learning community! Your child's unique gifts can help them learn to their highest potential. Families are a very important part in this process and I look forward to working with you!

My Education and Professional Background

I am a third-generation educator. This is my seventeenth year as a teacher. I began my career in Ohio. I have taught kindergarten, first, and third grade. My husband and I are proud parents of four wonderful children. I received a Master of Education degree from The Ohio State University with certification in elementary education (K-8) and also my Bachelor of Fine Arts cum laude in Dance Performance from The Ohio State University. In addition to my classroom teaching experiences, I am a classically trained dancer and choreographer. During undergrad I performed as a member of The Ohio State University Dance Company. I have a special interest in working with students in such extracurricular activities as school musicals and other dance and choreographed movement opportunities including being the ballet mistress for a youth dance company, and a teacher of pre-ballet, ballet, and modern dance.

My Educational Philosophy

A teacher is blessed with an opportunity to interact with a student for an entire year. I am involved in the development of a human mind; I witness along with the family the stages the child progresses through life. I feel the greatest reward of teaching is when I see a break through with a student who has been struggling with an aspect of their learning. This is exciting because we accomplished something together. Also, I enjoy the challenge of teaching. Enriching the learning environment for highly motivated student and watching him or her move to the next level or unlocking a puzzle for a child who is struggling is hard work but very rewarding. Finally, I decided to become a teacher because I like learning. The process of acquiring education is an adventure into the unknown. I would like to be a part of a student's adventure and to encourage him or her to take risks and develop his or her own ideas. Teaching is where I want to be!

Welcome!

Welcome to Shumway's music program! Thank you for visiting my webpage.

My Education and Professional Background

I was so inspired by my own experience with music that I wanted to share it with others. I studied Music Education at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. I graduated with a Bachelor degree in Music Education. I started my teaching career in Indiana for four years and then moved to Arizona. I have taught all ages from K-12 throughout my career, but my heart belongs at the elementary level. I love starting students on their musical journey! We are able to experience music in so many ways! While I've taken many graduate courses to continue my learning, I've found one type of class that really enhances my teaching. The Orff Process, which is a method of teaching music to children, has transformed my classroom. By using the Orff Process, students can immediately take part in music activities by moving creatively, playing instruments, and singing. Every child is able to experience the joy of music right away!

My Educational Philosophy

I believe that every child is capable of singing and enjoying music. I believe every child can read, sing, play, move and create music. We start at a simple level by exploring all kinds of musical experiences and build our way to reading, writing and creating music. We can easily add in creative and choreographed movement and instruments. Music is a natural and vital part of our human experience. It feeds the soul and allows us to see and feel more of the beauty in the world. Beyond music's inherent points, it is all around us in our lives. We are surrounded by it in our TV shows, movies, ipods, holidays, classrooms, and more. Studying some of the patterns and building blocks of music allows us to appreciate the music around us in a deeper way. Enjoy the music around you!

Welcome!

Welcome to Mrs. Lloyd's 5th grade class. I am excited for this year in 5th grade. Please stop by this page often to keep up to date with our classroom happenings this year.

My Education and Professional Background

I taught in Chandler School District 2002-2008 at Frye Elementary. Then, my husband and I moved to Indiana where I taught for 2 years. Then, we moved back to AZ in 2012 and I taught at a charter school in Mesa. We adopted our son and I stayed home and worked as the Children's Director at our church, where my husband is the worship pastor now. I am excited for my 9th year teaching, and especially because it is back in my hometown, Chandler, where I attended Kindergarten-12th grade.

My Educational Philosophy

I believe that every child has a chance to learn. I treat every child with respect and give them an opportunity to learn. I expect my students to try and give it their best every day! Together, we can achieve and learn to make them achieve their potential. My favorite moment is when I see my students reach their potential and exceed it!

Welcome to Miss Jacobson's Kindergarten Class!

My Education and Professional Background

I graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo Utah in 2008. I then moved down to St George Utah where I taught second grade for two years. I then moved schools and grade levels, discovering that I love kindergarten! I taught kindergarten for 5 years in Utah before moving to Arizona in May. Welcome!

Welcome to 5th grade! I am so excited to begin the school year and see all the progress that is made this year! Fifth graders will be experiencing many new and exciting hands on projects, writing assignments, and real-life applications of the curriculum. Fifth grade is an extremely pivotal time for students-a unique time because it is the bridge between the primary grades and middle school. Each student will be guided to excel to the best of their ability, both academically and socially.

My Education and Professional Background

I attended Arizona State University and graduated in 2011. This will be my fifth year teaching. I previously taught in the Balsz School District, teaching both fourth and fifth grade. Teaching has always been a passion of mine from the time I was a small child. I know that it is my true calling!

My Educational Philosophy

I want to make learning memorable and fun for all students. I believe that all students are unique and can learn. Not every child learns the same way and no one knows your child better than you. I believe that having a strong partnership between teachers and parents can help students to be their most effective selves. I welcome your support and input in the effort to help your child reach their individual goals this school year. I also believe that each child deserves an individualized education, based on their needs. This helps to ensure that each child can reach their greatest potential in fifth grade. Most importantly, I want to encourage students to become lifelong learners and love learning new things.

I am extremely excited to be a part of the Shumway family this year. I moved to sunny Arizona in June from Montana. I expect great things from all my students in class. Each and every one of them has something great to offer, and I can't wait to see what that is.

My Education and Professional Background

I received my degree in Elementary Education from MSU-Billings. I have worked as a Paraprofessional running reading interventions for struggling readers. Also, I have worked with students that have severe emotional and physical disabilities. This is my first year teaching fourth grade, and I could not be more excited.

Welcome!

Welcome to Ms. King's Fourth Grade Class. We hope you will enjoy learning about our class and take advantage of the resources on the parent page and computer links.

My Education and Professional Background

I've been an Elementary Teacher for over 15 years at Shumway. I'm currently teach fourth grade, but have also taught third and sixth grades. Welcome! I'm Cheryl King, 4th Grade Teacher at Shumway Elementary. I completed my Bachelor's degree at ASU and my Masters at NAU. I also have my ESL Endorsement and am a Trained Trainer in Thinking Maps and Write from Beginning. Recent conferences I have attended include The Responsive Class, Love and Logic for Educators, and Leader in Me by Franklin Covey.

My Educational Philosophy

Education is the foundation on which our students build their lives and through their lives the world becomes a better place. It is within the days learning to do math, read, write, form and express opinions that an education is built. Students all have the ability to learn and grow. In my class, I think it is important for student to know it's okay to make mistakes and then learn from them. Doing so is the way we learn and grow in character. As a teacher, I provide those opportunities and it's my hope that students take ownership of their own learning.

Welcome!

Hello Students and Families! It is such a pleasure to be here with you now! I'm excited to be in Arizona and learn along with the students.

My Education and Professional Background

I earned a Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2008. Since then, I have taken additional courses in English Language Learners and Technology Integration. After spending 7 years in the fifth largest school district in the country, I'm excited to experience CUSD.

My Educational Philosophy

I love learning and strive to instill a love of learning in my students. I believe students learn best by being actively involved in their learning and working together cooperatively. This also helps prepare them for their futures. Additionally, learning should be enjoyable, even when it's challenging, so I love to incorporate games (especially in math)! My favorite times in the classroom are when students don't even realize how hard they are working!

Welcome!

I am originally from Powell, Ohio. I lived for the last 13 years in Greensboro, North Carolina where I have been teaching for the last 5 years. I just recently moved to Arizona and so far I am loving my new state. This will be my fifth year teaching 3rd grade and I am very excited for this school year. In my free time I love to take my dogs hiking and running and on the weekends I spend my time reading and playing tennis.

My Education and Professional Background

I attended High Point University in North Carolina and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice. After several years of working I realized my passion lay else where and went back to school at Guilford College to obtain my Elementary Education License. The first school I taught at was Guilford Preparatory Academy, a charter school, where I taught 1st and 2nd grade. The next three years I taught at Bessemer Elementary in 2nd and 3rd grades. I am currently working on my Masters in Teaching and Learning Instructional Coaching form Clemson University.

My Educational Philosophy

I believe that every child can learn, no matter where they come from or their background, half the battle is believing that you can do something. I think it is important that every student becomes an independent problem solver. Life is full of problems, big and small ones, and it is important that a child can learn how to take a problem or a challenge head on. It is also important that children understand that failure is ok. We learn and grow from making mistakes and if we fail, we pick ourselves back up and try again.

Welcome!

Welcome to Miss Hammel's 3rd Grade Class!

My Education and Professional Background

I am a proud graduate of Arizona State University (Go Devils) with a B.A. in Elementary Education specializing in English as a Second Language. I am so incredibly excited to be teaching third grade this year!

My Educational Philosophy

I believe that student growth is the greatest measure of achievement. In my classroom, my goal is for each student to find success in the small advancements they make in their learning everyday. Every student in my class is more than capable of reaching their greatest potential and I will do everything I can to help them. I strive to make the environment in which they are learning fruitful and positive as well as challenging, but most importantly fun and memorable.

Welcome!

Welcome to my website. Thank you for visiting.

My Education and Professional Background

I graduated with honors from the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University. My degree is in both, elementary education and special education. Before education I had two successful careers in automotive and home loans. As a teacher I have had 5 years of teaching and learning in a variety of special education and general education classrooms.

My Educational Philosophy

I believe that education is only useful if you know what to do with the information gained. Within my classroom walls, I create experiences for students to use their new found knowledge. These experiences happen because there is a trust between classmates, where mistakes are proof that we are trying and correct answers are not what we are always looking for.
