Shumway Leadership Academy (2021-2022)
On May 13, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce surprised Shumway Leadership Academy Principal Korry Brenner with the 2022 Administrator of the Year award. She will be recognized at an awards dinner on June 2 at the Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino.

Shumway Leadership Academy will unveil its new Rigamajig – granted by the Morgan Stanley Foundation and the national non-profit KABOOM!, on Friday, March 4. Rigamajig allows children to develop language, communication and problem-solving skills that are key to cognitive development and STEM learning. Shumway Leadership Academy will incorporate the Rigamajig play set into its school programming, providing a unique, year-round play element for kids.

Shumway Leadership Adademy kindergarten students learned about African American leaders from history to help celebrate Black History Month. They learned that a black leader is someone who makes a difference in a good way like Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, George Crum, Jesse Owens, and Barack Obama. They were thrilled, excited, and disgusted by their discoveries; many experienced the inside of pumpkin for the first time! Learning the parts of speech class can be messy!

The Shumway Stars in Tracy Corbin's English Language Development classroom are shining bright as they demonstrate their English skills! They had a competition to challenge each other in writing plural nouns using suffixes, spelling rules, and irregular plurals that they have learned to use in their speaking and writing. These students excel at having fun while testing their knowledge!

The Shining Stars in Shumway Leadership Academy's English Language Development program enjoyed an "Eggscellent Grammar Hunt" this month. Tracy Corbin led them through an "Eggsciting" adventure to search for various parts of speech in their writing!

Students in Tracy Corbin's English Language Development class at Shumway Leadership Academy held a pep rally to celebrate the 2021 Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) test! Students are excited to show their diligence. They are shining bright!

First graders in Donna Hughes class have been hard at work learning about force and motion in STEM lab and science. They tested the amount of force it would take to move a pumpkin vs. a ping pong ball. Next, they tested the force it would take to move a cotton ball vs. a ping pong ball by blowing air through a straw. Then they added different materials to a ramp to see how friction could slow an object. Lastly, they designed and built houses that could stand up to the huffing and puffing of the Big Bad Wolf (a hair dryer). If the first design failed, they made changes and tested again. Way to synergize, first graders!

Superintendent's Student Citizenship Award winner: Alejandra exemplifies leadership and strong character. She is a member and treasurer of the Student Lighthouse team, the leadership-based student club that pairs with Stephen Covey's Leader in Me program. She has thoughtful responses and creative problem solving strategies to make Shumway an even better place for students, staff, and the community. Nurturing, kind, and supportive, Alejandra is a student to be proud of. She has a bright and promising future in front of her!

As part of Shumway Leadership Academy's ongoing STEM program, Miranda Saenz' fourth grade students are teaching Donna Knapik's preschool students about the life cycle of plants.

Sarah Hutchins, Shumway's reading specialist, has obtained Wilson Level 1 Certification. This was a yearlong extensive training in the Wilson Reading System. Her commitment to learning how to give intense, systematic, and explicit reading instruction is a gift she will be giving to her students.

Kindergartener's in Susan Murphy's class held a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) activity building airplanes for the ABC 26 day count down. First, they made a plan for the designs and discussed thrust and lift. Next, they tested the airplanes. Some students were disappointed with their product so they redesigned keeping in mind lift. Finally, they tested again and had success.

Joseph Lara Franco, kindergarten student at Shumway Leadership Academy, shared his Guatemalan holiday traditions with his classmates. Together, they celebrated his success in achieving personal speaking and English Language Development goals as demonstrated in his presentation.

Third grade English language students at Shumway Leadership Academy served as leaders for the Kindergarten English language development class to meet their goals in listening, speaking, and writing. They assisted in providing an authentic and messy hands on experience to further their understanding of adjectives, noun and prepositional phrases.

The Chandler Fire Department visited Shumway Leadership Academy preschool classes during community helper's week. The students learned about fire safety and the role of emergency services in our city.

Shumway Leadership Academy recently showcased the school to the community with a "Leadership Day." Students' performances were top-notch, they also demonstrated technology and held presentations on the various student-initiated clubs.

Shumway's Student Lighthouse organized our first service project of the year: Penny Wars. All proceeds raised were donated to Scarborough Elementary School in Houston, Texas. This school was affected by Hurricane Harvey, and we hope these funds can help with supplies. Students raised a total of $1,157.64. First grade was the winner raising $308.18.

During the week of September 11th, our student leaders did not want to just remember the heroes of September 11th, they wanted to take action. After a very special flag raising on Monday, the entire week was dedicated to being kind to others. Just to name a few examples, students wrote notes to one another, did deliveries for teachers, and tied shoes for younger students.

Shumway Leadership Academy participated in Arizona Agricultural Literacy Days during the first week of November. Two youth volunteers from our local 4H community, Jenna Mennetti and Brooklyn Corbin, read to 7 classrooms, sharing the importance of agriculture in our state. Teachers were then given the book to add to their class libraries. Students enjoyed learning about and discussing the role of agriculture in our Arizona communities from these two Maricopa County 4H Youth Leaders.

On Thursday, Nov. 3, First Sergeant Chris Llewellyn and members of the Army visited our school. They presented a beautiful video of the history of the American flag, eight replicas of the original flags, and a demonstration of how to present and fold the flag. Their visit was a wonderful connection between our students and our United States history.

We are excited to share that our school is going to have its own presidential election this year alongside the public voters! We will set up a voting poll in the courtyard by the front office where students will line up to vote at a private computer. At the end of the day, we will tally all of the ballots and announce which candidate has won our school election!

This past year and a half, Shumway has had an increased focus on student leadership development. The students have embraced this new program and have shown great leadership qualities. We are so proud of them! To reflect this new focus, our school name was changed to Shumway Leadership Academy starting for the 2016-2017 school year.

The first annual Shumway Leadership Day was presented by the Shumway students. They presented the 7 Habits / Leader in Me program and how it has positively impacted their lives and Shumway as a school. The day consisted of students performing, answering questions and giving guided tours to our 100 guests, including district employees, community leaders and parents. The Leader in Me website

Congratulations to Shumway's Battle of the Books team! Leader Amy Shoot and students Grace Glenn, Katherina Lemos and Azul Araujo-Tanori earned their way through district semi and final battles to represent Chandler Unified School District at the Battle of the Books Regionals on May 4th at Stapley Junior High in Mesa.

Liberty Wildlife came to Shumway and presented to the Kindergarten and 1st grade students. After the presentation, the students started collecting Dawn detergent, sponges and paper towels to donate to Liberty Wildlife and give back to their community. Liberty Wildlife Website

Shumway students participated in the "Bench the Bag" program. They collected a total of 589 pounds -- approximately 44,175 plastic bags and wrap. Through their efforts, Shumway will receive a planter from Trex along with a desert-friendly plant.

5 members of the Chandler Football team spent the afternoon with the 6th grade boys from Shumway Leadership Academy. The students gave up their own time to come and mentor to the Shumway students. Each of the Chandler High School Seniors shared their story about the struggles they overcame to get where they are today and what they needed to do to get to college. They emphasized good grades, respecting your parents and teachers, making good choices, and setting goals for their future.

Mrs. Johnston's 2nd grade class participated with others to record themselves reading stories. These stories are being shared with children in the Arizona foster care program. AZCentral.com article: If you tell a foster child a story, will it chase away her nightmares?

Shumway Elementary Student Lighthouse Team decorated and stuffed duffle bags for children in foster care so they can move with dignity. We call them "Sweet" cases.

Congratulations to Shumway Elementary for achieving the Bronze Award in the Healthier US School Challenge. This Challenge is a cornerstone of Let's Move!, an ambitious initiative to solve the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation. Thank you also to teacher Bill Tuttle who organized the Challenge at our school.
