    Welcome Jaguars!

Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” ~Steven Kloves (screenplay), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, 2004, spoken by the character Albus Dumbledore

My name is Anne Smith, and I am one of the counselors here at Andersen. I have been at AJHS for over 10 years and have enjoyed meeting siblings and family members that come through our school year after year. Each year brings new challenges and victories, and I feel it is a privilege to work with our young people in helping them “turn on the light”. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

    Educational Background

I graduated for Ottawa University with a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, and hold a teaching certificate in the area of Guidance Counseling. I have also completed my Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling and am a licensed substance abuse counselor.

    Professional Background

I have been in the position of guidance counselor here at Andersen for the past year 8 years. Previously, I held a position as a Special Education teacher (in the area of Science) at the high school level and worked with at-risk students before that. When I began my career, I worked in the mental health field for eight years, focusing on the adolescent population.

    Counseling Philosophy

Here at Andersen, we believe that empowering our students to achieve their academic and future career goals is a top priority. To accomplish this, we work together with the student, parent, teachers / school staff and community. We also work to support our students socially and emotionally by going into the classroom to provide lessons on a variety of subjects. In addition to our classroom visits, I also love working with the student in small groups and one-on-one.

    The Choice Is Yours

I am a product of the Chandler School District, as are many of my co-workers. Having had a positive experience as a student in the Chandler School District like I did, working for CUSD is like coming home.

Here at AJHS the campus functions like a small community working together for the good of the students. Over the many years I have worked here, I have seen the school adapt to the needs of our ever changing population. Some of these changes reflect our passion for excellence shown by our two time A+ awards, and in our many programs on campus that address students’ academic and emotional needs.

To choose Chandler Unified School District, and particularly Andersen Jr. High, is to make a choice with the knowledge that your student will be attending a fantastic school that is centered on students’ needs.
