On Patriots Day, Jacobson elementary fifth graders reviewed the events of September 11th and the many lives that were lost; not only civilians, but first responders as well. The students came up with the idea to write letters to the first responders in our community to thank them for their selflesness and commitment to helping others. We called this "Operation Gratitude." Fifth grade teacher Mrs. Garcia then turned their letters into an American flag, and we received special permission to deliver our flag to the firefighters at Station 5.

    Flat Teacher
Now that learning has moved online due to COVID-19 precautions, the second grade teachers at Jacobson Elementary were looking for ways to maintain personal connections with their students. As the team was planning for their students, they picked up on a trend inspired by the book series Flat Stanley. The second grade teachers, as well as many teachers across the country, chose to adopt this idea as a way to bridge the social distancing gap between themselves and their 2nd grade students. The team created a bingo board filled with activities that their students could complete with their "flat teacher." They mailed the bingo board, a poem, and their Bitmoji Air Hugs image to all of their students. They asked their families to send them videos and pictures of the students doing these activities with their "flat teacher." The teachers plan to make a COVID-19 scrapbook with all these pictures to remember the time they were apart, but together in their hearts.

    Glo Germs
After a lesson from Mrs. Menghini about how germs spread and how to avoid it, each child "sneezed" (a scoop of lotion mixed with glo germ powder). They then took time to touch anything in the classroom that they might touch in a normal day. After that, we turned out the lights and saw the results of our germ spreading. Finally and best of all, they used baby wipes to wipe up all of the germs resulting in a very clean classroom! Mrs. Menghini hopes that this tactile learning will instill in them how important hand washing is! The pictures were a little tough with the low light, but still very cool!

4th Grade Takes a Walk on Mars
Jacobson 4th graders took a "Walk on Mars!" The "Walk on Mars" is a walkable basketball-court sized vinyl map of Mars that was brought to Jacobson by an ASU scientist and NASA volunteer for 4th graders on Tuesday, March 3. The ASU scientist helped capture the pictures of Mars via the Odyssey spacecraft and created the 3D printed map. Space Explorers Club offered this experience to all 4th graders to spread awareness and excitement about Mars. The 4th graders had a tour of the map and then completed a geological location scavenger hunt.

    Memory Tiles
Sixth grade students have been busy painting their memory tiles during their science/social studies period over the first couple of weeks in January. Students had to preplan their design by drawing four different ideas that show they used up the entire 6 by 6 inch ceramic tile. The design was a symbol of themselves representing something that identified them as 6th graders. It had to be thought out right down to the three different colors (excluding black and white) they would use. Students were taught to color spaces but paint layers. They also learned how that technique makes the design details pop out on the white background. The Memory Wall is a Dad's Club creation starting since 2017 and continues to be sponsored by them as they take on firing of the tiles in the kiln and then hang on the wall. The tiles will be hung before the end of the school year.
