    Colonizing Mars
    Students in sixth grade are colonizing MARS! Students are learning about farms and natural resources. These designers work collaboratively to read articles on how BEST to use natural resources and technology OR supplement when resources are not available. They listened to each other present their ideas and then had time to design their OWN Mars colony plans, and finally build models of their designs. JETS scientists fly with PRIDE!

    Memory Tiles
    Sixth grade students have been busy painting their memory tiles during their science/social studies period over the first couple of weeks in January. Students had to preplan their design by drawing four different ideas that show they used up the entire 6 by 6 inch ceramic tile. The design was a symbol of themselves representing something that identified them as 6th graders. It had to be thought out right down to the three different colors (excluding black and white) they would use. Students were taught to color spaces but paint layers. They also learned how that technique makes the design details pop out on the white background. The Memory Wall is a Dad's Club creation starting since 2017 and continues to be sponsored by them as they take on firing of the tiles in the kiln and then hang on the wall. The tiles will be hung before the end of the school year.

    Musical
    Students in Megan DeFrancesco, Caroline Coking and Susana Clapham's 5th grade classes wrapped up the quarter by performing a musical -- Revivor Philadelphia! Not only was it highly entertaining, but the content was all based on social studies standards. The play helped to reinforce students' understanding of the writing of the constitution and all that our Founding Fathers accomplished in establishing our country. Great job, 5th graders!

    Congratulations to Esther Kim whose Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest entry was selected as the school winner for Jacobson Elementary. For over 30 years, Lions clubs around the globe have sponsored this international art contest to give children everywhere the chance to express their visions of peace and inspire the world through art and creativity. Audrey was awarded a certificate and cash prize from the Sun Lakes Lion's Club, sponsored by Intel.

    Kite Making
    Sixth graders in Shannan Wright's class researched, discussed and then created kites using ancient techniques recently. The students are reading a book called Dragonwings by Lawrence Yep to support ancient cultures studies in social science. After their research, they constructed kites from bamboo skewers, tissue paper, construction paper, yarn and string.     Peace Poster Contest
    Jacobson Elementary had a record number of students apply for the peace poster contest sponsored by the Sun Lakes Lions Club and Intel. Five students turned in posters depicting their concept of what peace looks like in the world today. One was selected and turned in for the district competition: Esther Kim's depiction of Mother Earth embracing us all. Dr. Adama Sallu helped the school choose from the magnificent entries! All entries will be showcased at the fourth annual English language learners diversity picnic.

    Quarterly Spotlight Ceremony
    Jacobson JETS fly with pride! At the recent school-wide quarterly spotlight ceremony, all school specials instructors highlight students who thrive in specials area classes. Students this month were chosen because of being supportive and encouraging to others. Special area teachers see close to 950 students each week. They help guide and promote growth essentials every day.

    Walk of Remembrance
    Over 200 Jacobson students designed stars to honor loved ones who are or were in the military. Third grade teacher Monica Nicol and a team of students created a "Walk of Rememberance" to honor our country's heros. The walking exhibit starts in the front office and continues throughout campus.

    Buddy Classes
    Sixth grade leaders work with kindergarten buddies for a sweet cause! Stacy Thompson's kindergarten and Kelly Murrieta's 6th grade buddy classes found a way to make leftover Halloween candy something to learn from. Teams of two worked together to sort, count and label the candy before it was all donated to the Chandler Care Center. (OK, maybe not ALL the candy...)

    Fourth through sixth grade Jacobson Gifted Program (JGP) students participate in "Design Squad" engineering projects weekly! This week, students are collaborating to design and build bridges able to support the weight of at least 2,000 grams of pennies! The JGP is designed to challenge the gifted student through a multi-dimensional teaching approach involving special curricula, enrich-ment and the acceleration of course content.

    Pies in the Face
    Mrs. Murrieta celebrated with pies in the face from her students for being a top earning class for school fundraisers! Thank you to all who contributed! Jacobson is grateful for their giving, supportive public school community. This year, PTO's fundraising committee raised over $52,000. Funds go to support over 18 student clubs, additional books and current event magazines in the classroom, new playground equipment and so much more.

    Science of Baseball
    Jacobson Jets teachers Kristina Graves and Monica Nichol spent a Saturday to attend the Arizona Diamondbacks teacher training on the content of the Science of Baseball to bring back to their classrooms. Additionally two students represented Jacobson: Elizabeth Young presented her project on the Area of the Strike Zone, and former Jet Catherine Young presented her project on Choosing the Right Baseball Bat. Both used the Scientific Method and were given recognition by the Arizona Diamondbacks for their project.

    Dads Club
    Together with our Dad's Club, we worked all last year to bring a large storage unit to campus. This extra space will house supplies for our after schools clubs and a workshop for the Dad's Club. These involved dads, quick to jump in with muscles and handyman skills, are collecting tool donations for the storage unit.

    Viola? Trumpet? Bass? Sax? Fourth grade students learned about band, orchestra and general music options to help them make a music choice for 5th grade.     Playground Plan
    Kindergarten hard work pays off! Kindergarten students and teachers participated in a project-based learning activity where they discussed WHY they need a new, better-designed playground and HOW it should look. Students and staff used thinking maps to process their ideas and create ideas for a new, safe playground. Students wrote letters and created videos that went to district office officials and school principal, Ms. Wolf. These kindergarten leaders found out this month the project was a success! Jacobson will get a new north-side playground this summer!

    Genius Hour Projects
    Jacobson sixth graders worked during fourth quarter on their Genius Hour Projects. The students learned how to sew sling backpacks and worked to fill them with toiletries. These were donated to Hamilton High School to help CUSD students in need. Rajani Rastogi, a social worker for the district, was a guest speaker in one class and invited students to Hamilton High to see how the district manages supplies for underprivileged families. While at Hamilton, Mrs. Wright's class packed 90 supply bags for families, toured the high school and spoke with National Honor Society and Huskies Helping Huskies students, as well as attending a mindfulness session.
