Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) In appreciation for all the love and support they offer all year, we recently honored our amazing parent volunteers with an assembly filled with music, chants -- and even a little magic! Thank you for all you do!
Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) Tarwater Elementary held its annual Art Masterpiece night on April 9. Families enjoyed viewing a variety of works by student artists and students collaborated on the beautiful cherry blossom tree on the outside stage.
Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) Tarwater Elementary held an annual spring barbeque on April 5 to celebate its 20-year anniversary. Bogle Junior High band was on hand to play and families enjoyed the beautiful weather with the school's namesakes, Robert and Danell Tarwater.
Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) Sixth grader John Davis received the 2019 Youth Echo Award presented by DMB Community Life and Eastmark Subdivision. This award is given to outstanding youth that have dedicated their life to helping others. In addition to receiving a certificate, John received donations (lemon juice, cups and sugar) towards his annual lemonade stand. Profits from the stand will be donated to a local non-profit organization. Thank you, John, for your dedication to helping others in our community!

Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) The Tarwater Lunar New Year celebration on February 19 was a hit. They had a wonderful turnout, despite the chilly weather!
Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) Congratulations to 6th grader Victoria Miller for being selected as the Sun Lakes Lions International Peace Poster Contest winner for Tarwater Elementary. Tori was honored by the Lions at the Sun Lakes Country Club. Tori's poster speaks volumes as to how she perceives the need for peace in our world.
Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) Technology teacher, Jamie Droeg, is bringing 3-D printing to Tarwater! Mrs. Droeg was awarded a school-wide Chandler Education (CEF) Foundation Cash for Classrooms grant which will help fund the purchase of a MakerBot Mini 3-D printer. Mrs. Droeg is furthering her technology expertise by receiving certification through the MakerBot Certification Program. Well done, Mrs. Droeg! Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) Tarwater kindergarten teacher Jamie Ezolt has a new friend in Hollywood -- actor, Mark Duplass! Mark Duplass is one of several celebrities taking on Instagram's #10Featured Teachers Celebrity Challenge. Mrs. Ezolt explained to Duplass that her classroom is full of children eager to learn, yet providing relevant, hands-on STEM activities is a financial challenge. Duplass took on the challenge and now, Mrs. Ezolt is receiving packages full of much-needed supplies. Mrs. Ezolt sums up her kindergarten class' experiences with this: "They're (students) talking about it, they're building it, they're making it and they're learning on the trials and fails that come with it. Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) Tarwater teachers received four Chandler Education Foundation (CEF) Cash for Classrooms grants: Jamie Ezolt and Kim Johannsen for their We have a Mystery to Solve project; Anne Jones and Jim Chiang for their All Aboard! Bring on the STEAM! project; Ying Shao for her Chinese Language Olympics project; and 3rd Grade Team Nikole Bohn, Mike Wittreich, Mark Morris, Kailie Fisher, Grace, McCourt and Ying Shao for their Author's Tea project. Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) Congratulations to Tarwater Elementary PE teacher Jennifer Traficano who was one of four CUSD teachers who presented at the Arizona Health and Physical Education State Convention during the week of October 22. Their session was titled "CUSD PE TEACHERS are OPEN to Fitness!"
Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) Not only is Ms. Block a sensational sixth grade teacher at Tarwater, she is also a member of the Young Professionals Council. YPC is a governing and working council that helps to facilitate opportunities for young professionals to network and develop leadership skills. Ms Block also works closely with the Cancer Support Community of Arizona. Thank you, Emelia, for caring about our community! You are an outstanding Tarwater Toro.
Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) At the Board meeting on Wednesday, September 12th, the American Heart Association (AHA) recognized Chandler Unified as the number one district in Arizona and the eighth in the Western States for the Jump Rope for Heart campaign. Additionally, top teachers were recognized: Jennifer Traficano (Tarwater), David Angell (Ryan) and Grace Alvarado (CTA Goodman) on 30 years of service to AHA. They also presented a CPR kit for a high school.
Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) Jim Chiang, Tarwater's Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Mandarin kindergarten teacher, was chosen as a presenter for the ASU Confucius Institute's Professional Development Series. Jim will be leading a lecture and sharing his expertise as a successful, Dual Language Immersion educator. Tarwater is very fortunate to have Mr. Chiang, and we are proud to call him a Toro!
Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) Kindergarten teacher Anne Jones has been chosen to continue serving on the Childsplay AZ Advisory Panel (CAP). Mrs. Jones attends meetings, and gives input and advice regarding the Arts in education from a teacher's perspective. Mrs. Jones also serves as a liaison between Arizona educators and Childsplay. Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) Congratulations to third grade teacher, Grace McCourt! Mrs. McCourt has authored and published Larry's Letters from the Zoo, a brilliantly written children's book about a zookeeper who builds an enclosure and then has to decide which animal will get to move in! Larry's Letters from the Zoo is illustrated by Mrs. McCourt's friend, Hayley Mayne. Tarwater staff and students are hoping for a sequel! The art of writing is alive and well at Tarwater Elementary. Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) Tarwater parent and Intel employee Liz Kuehn continues to provide opportunities for classroom instruction using the S.T.E.M process. Mrs. Kuehn heads up a powerhouse volunteer program providing resources and volunteers available to co-lead students in S.T.E.M. (Science Technology Engineering and Math) project activities. Classroom teachers have project bins full of supplies and detailed activities available to use throughout the school year. Mrs. Kuehn was also awarded an Intel grant which funded updates to our S.T.E.M. lab and various projects around our campus. Thank you, Liz Kuehn, for all you do at Tarwater!

Tarwater Elementary - (2017-2018) Congratulations to Tarwater P.E. teacher Jennifer Traficano who was named Sun Lakes Rotary Teacher of the Month for February. She is an exemplary teacher who uses technology to connect student learning and progress through video blogs on the SeeSaw website. She also runs a Running Club with over 250 students members, as well.
Tarwater Elementary - (2017-2018) Mrs. Moxley sponsors Tarwater's Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) after school club. Sixth grade students meet to plan and implement random acts of kindness to encourage students and staff members. Recently, the RAK Club chalked encouraging affirmations on the campus sidewalks. Though the chalk has faded, the kindness continues!
Tarwater Elementary - (2017-2018) Congratulations to Mrs. Traficano who received a $750 CEF grant for her Technology in PE program. The grant will fund the purchase of tablet devices to be utilized by students when attending PE class. Students are recording audio and video journal entries through the online Seesaw Learning Journal. Parents have access to students' recordings where students discuss learning concepts, and track fitness and assessment progress and goals!
Tarwater Elementary - (2017-2018) Kindergarten teacher Anne Jones contributes her time and talents off-campus supporting the Tarwater community. Mrs. Jones served as Tarwater's liaison for the recent bond election and she sits on the Childsplay Advisory Panel where educators offer insight and input to the Childsplay Theatre organization. Tarwater Elementary - (2017-2018) Congratulations to Ying Shao, our Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Mandarin third grade teacher, who received the state of Arizona Math Endorsement (K-8) with the support of a scholarship from Chandler Education Foundation (CEF), as well as a CEF $500 grant for a Tarwater Third Grade Mandarin Summer Review Performance project.
Tarwater Elementary - (2017-2018) Mr. Ihms' third grade classroom is working on a collaborative project with classes in India and Columbia, organized through the Give Something Back International Foundation. Their goal this year is to design a website that will promote healthy foods and to address ways to overcome world hunger and lack of clean water. Tarwater Elementary - (2017-2018) Jackson Scott, third grade student at Tarwater, just returned from being on location in Toronto, Canada filming for the new upcoming Hulu series called Locke and Key -- another paranormal thriller for this veteran actor.
Tarwater Elementary - (2017-2018) Dr. Lynne Kenney, pediatric psychologist and author, is working with Mrs. Walker's 4th graders as part of the ACTIVATE™ pilot program. The students are helping Dr. Kenney create videos to teach research based movement in the classroom. The ACTIVATE™ Physical Exercise Program is scientifically designed to increase neuroplasticity and cognitive skills. Dr. Kenney is an ACTIVATE™ co-author!
Tarwater Elementary - (2017-2018) Dr. Ping Wei, Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Mandarin teacher at Tarwater, published a book titled National Sound and Gender Politics: Sound Modernity and Gender Politics in Early Chinese Cinema (1930-1937).

Tarwater Elementary - (2017-2018) Congratulations to Tarwater 4th Grade Teacher Katy Guhy, winner of a Chandler Education Association (CEA) "Member To Member" grant. Katy's grant was awarded to support a planned unit of instruction on electricity.

Tarwater Elementary - (2016-2017) The Tarwater Percussion Ensemble was recently awarded a Superior Rating at the Winter Garden Arizona (WGAZ) indoor performing arts competition. These amazing 5th and 6th grade musicians are the first and only elementary school ensemble in the state to EVER perform at WGAZ events with a full concert-percussion.
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) The Toro Ambassadors Service Club held a school sock drive and collected 748 pairs of new socks for Chandler's Clothes Cabin: free clothes for families in need.
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) Ying Shao, kindergarten Mandarin teacher, received the Lifelong Learning Legacy Scholarship from the Chandler Education Foundation. Mrs. Shao used the scholarship to prepare for Arizona's Early Childhood Endorsement Tests. Congratulations, Mrs. Shao, for meeting the qualifications and earning your endorsement!
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) Tarwater's 3rd and 4th Grade Science Club focuses on inquiry-based investigations and experimentations. Students have created water vapor, grown and analyzed plant parts, and executed controlled, liquid explosions!
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) Our ADPTS program has implemented 'Buddy Days' where our general ed and sped students come together and participate in activities, building awareness and acceptance.
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) Cindy Bickley's second graders participate as a class as part of the U of A Classroom CAT program where students pen-pal with student athletes. Mrs. Bickley's second graders are also eligible to participate in a variety of contests that involve them at the university, such as U of A Honorary Baseball Captain of the Day!
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) The Tarwater Comic Book Club is working in small groups to create original, publishable comic books! Students meet weekly to collaborate on projects.
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) Mr. Gaillard's kindergarten class is using STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) activities to learn about brain neurons and create representations of how neurons grow. After listening to Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch, the kindergarten STEM teams are building dragon-proof castles for the princess!
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) Ms. Santoro's fourth grade class set a new school Accelerated Reading record for the most words read: 29 million words!
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) The 65 member Tarwater Chorus Club has performed at several events this year, including our annual Giving Tree Assembly. The chorus is comprised of 4th, 5th and 6th graders who meet weekly to learn new music and practice.
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) The Tarwater Drum Club provides an opportunity for percussion and non-percussion students to learn to play instruments such as the marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, timpani, and tubano drums. The Drum Club is invited each year to perform with the Hamilton Percussion at their Spring Percussion Concert.
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) Tarwater 5th graders completed their Junior Achievement BizTown simulation day. One hundred-fifty students participated in job activities and ran businesses for their town in order to create a profit by the close of the day.
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) Tarwater kindergarten and first grade students celebrated Chinese New Years together! The day-long celebration included games and activities that taught students about the holiday and Chinese culture. Our Dual Language Immersion classes shared songs, stories, and writing projects in Mandarin!
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) Tarwater's kindergarten through sixth grade students participated in Code.org's Hour of Code event. Students used Blockly programming code and learned about the field of computer science. Our third through sixth grade students wrote 29,879 lines of code!
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) The Third Grade Team received a CEF Grant to support their Author's Tea Project. Students are planning, revising, editing, illustrating, and publishing their very own hardcover book. Parents will be invited to the Author's Tea to hear the books read aloud by student authors!
Tarwater Elementary - (2015-2016) Tarwater Third Grade teachers held their annual blanket, towel and animal supply donation drive for local animal shelters. The Tarwater community donated five car loads of donations. The teachers distributed the donations to animal shelters around the valley.
