Spring 2008-2009 Artist in Residence
Our 2008-2009 Spring Artist in Residence Program began on April 6 and continued until Thursday, May 28, 2009. The popular family music duo, “Sticks and Tones” including Henry and Maria Flurry, were our artists for this residency. Click here for their website! The Program was called 1492 and You and traces the historical migration of music, art and culture from Europe, Asia, South/Central America and the Caribbean to the Southwestern United States over the past 500 years! The residency concluded on Thursday, May 28, 2009 with a school-wide Art Walk featuring art from every classroom and a Culminating Performance that included the entire 3rd grade.
Henry and Maria are classically trained musicians who specialize in multicultural music and educating children. Henry plays the piano, Maria plays percussion, and both sing when performing together.
Maria conducted most of the sessions during the residency. Maria is an experienced orchestral percussionist and timpanist. She has received critical acclaim for her performances of the Water Concerto for Water Percussion composted by Tan Dun. She is founder and artistic director of the Chaparral MusicFest and continues as principal percussionist with the Flagstaff Symphony. The Flurrys live in Prescott with their two children and perform at schools and libraries all over Arizona.
