Congratulations to Hamilton's Cyber Security students who competed in the national cyber security competition, Cyberstart. Cyberstart is "capture the flag"-based competition where students complete real world challenges involving cryptography, programming, network security, and forensics. Nationwide there were 45,962 students competing this year. In Arizona, 29 students qualified as National Semifinalists, and seven of them are from Hamilton. These students are now in the competition to earn the top awards and scholarships. Congratulations to Stanley Nguyen (71,700 points), Ty Stinson (48,300 points), Mateo Aleksov (45,100 points), Luke O'Dempsey (43,650 points), Nathan Richards (28,000 points), Brian Chung (22,800 points) and Ananya Rai (21,100 points).

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Hamilton's Academic Decathlon team was named Regional Champion (7th year in a row), State Champion (4th year in a row), and placed 4th in Division 1 at NATIONALS after competing against 47 schools from the US and China! Every single Chandler High E-Sports team made it to the 2022 Playoffs. The Smash team ended their season with a loss against the second seed team from Willow Canyon High School. Hayden Wendt, Madden 22 player, ended his amazing winning streak due to a scheduling conflict with a national Robotics competition. Daniel Torrez is still in the running for the PlayVS championship for Madden, currently competing in the regional semifinals. The Rocket League team entered playoffs at seed 13 and faced the Seton Sentinels from Seton Catholic Prep in the first round. In a best-of-7 game series, the Wolves swept 4-0, but then lost to Brophy last Friday. Congratulations to CHS E-Sports and Coach Samantha Seery on a terrific first season!

Over 150 students were inducted into Chandler High's National Honor Society (NHS) for 2022. Inductees were chosen based on the four pillars of NHS: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. NHS is open to students in grades 10-12 who meet the requirements for membership.

Seniors in Chandler High's International Baccalaureate (IB) program, recognized worldwide as the most rigorous high school coursework, were celebrated for their academic accomplishments and perseverance. Many of the students have been part of the IB and Middle Years Program for four years. Grace Combe and Makayla Larntz were recognized as the 2021-2022 IB Students of the Year. Special congratulations to Kelsey Brown and Dan Beck for being named IB Teachers of the Year.

ACP Middle School students Nicolas Acedo (8th grade, pictured left) and Emilio Acedo (7th grade, pictured right), participated in the Junior International Karate Cup in Las Vegas. Nicolas won a silver medal in Kumite and a bronze medal in Kata. Emilio won a silver medal in Kumite. Both were representing Chandler Martial Arts Center.

Auxier Elementary (2021-2022) |

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Auxier Elementary sixth grader Lundyn Smith has been a SUPERSTAR on the Casteel Junior High Academic Pentathlon team this year. During the state competition Lundyn was named 1st in the state in three of the five events and the top sixth grader in science. She was #1 overall for honors sixth graders. She also beat all honors seventh graders and only one honors eighth grader outscored her. Lundyn and Casteel advance to Nationals which will be held in about a month. Arizona is one of the top states in Pentathlon, so she is a legitimate contender for National Champion. Coach Sheila Wilson is very excited to have her join the pentathlon class next year. Sixth graders from feeder schools are eligible to compete on the Casteel team, but generally must study on their own to prepare for competition (can't attend class or club).

Eighty CUSD students from the Class of 2022 earned a fine arts diploma seal! The Arizona State Seal of Arts Proficiency is awarded to students who have demonstrated high levels of proficiency and commitment to the Arizona Arts Education Standards through personal expression and creative experiences. Students focus on one or more artistic disciplines: visual arts, theatre, music, dance, and media arts.

The author then read their adventures and loved it so much he agreed to have a zoom call with the students. The kids were so excited to be part of this. What a great experience!

Congratulations to Bianca Lorraine Osterling who was accepted to the Summer TGen Bioscience Leadership Academy. She submitted her application, went though a rigorous interview process, and was selected from a pool of over 130 competitive candidates. She will attend a two-week bioscience program where scientists and staff will share their research expertise and expose students to technical skills basics, lab shadowing, clinical trials, bioethics, experimental design and so much more! Each graduate of the program receives a $1,000 scholarship.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Students from Hamilton High School were crowned Arizona State Champions in the David Ricardo Economics Challenge. They now advance to national semi-finals. On Friday April 15, 28 Hamilton students competed in the Arizona Economic Challenge Competition held at Mesa Community College. Rachel Kan, Chloe Zhan, Kenny Wang, and Andy Ma are Arizona State Champions in the David Ricardo Economics Category. A second team of Kevin Li, Arnav Nigam, Vivienn Burnett and Arhan Sankhla took first place in Personal Finance Challenge and Ryan Gan, Aditya Patel, and Vihaan Hari received the Judges Award in Personal Finance Case Study. On April 19, the City of Chandler held the 19th Environmental Art Contest in city council chambers to to recognize nineteen fourth grade winners. Hundreds of school children from private, charter and public schools within the city submitted artwork focused on recycling, water conservation and storm water pollution prevention. Twelve winners from seven Chandler Unified School District schools were winners of this year's contest. Their winning artwork will help promote the City of Chandler's conservation messages though a calendar, poster, city newsletters, social media and more. Congratulations to all the CUSD students!

Sophia Limjoco's 2nd grade class at Tarwater Elementary recently threw a surprise celebration for their reading support volunteer, Margaret Anne Dunn. Mrs. Dunn recently became a U.S. citizen, so the class seized the opportunity to learn about the Statue of Liberty, immigrants, and the citizenship exam. They celebrated not only a newly minted citizen but also a generous and kind Tarwater volunteer.

Maricopa County Fair was a huge success for Chandler FFA (Future Farmers of America) with exhibitors demonstrating extreme teamwork in action, amazing showmanship, and market achievements. Chandler High students earned over $91,000 by selling their market steers, lambs, hogs, and chickens:
- Adrianna Erwin placed 3rd in the market black face lambs.
- Annabelle Williams was 2nd in her Heavy Weight Crossbred class, and 3rd overall.
- Chandra Andazola was 2nd her market class. Chandra sold her market steer for $22,750.
- Jayda Schmerfeld sold her market lamb for $3,900.
- Porter Fitzpatrick sold his market hog for $12,750.
- Leo Orozco sold his broiler chickens for $900.
- Adrianna Erwin, Annabelle Williams, Chandra Andazola, Kaeli Bielak, Jayda Schmerfeld & Raynelle Harrington all received callbacks and were in the finals for showmanship for large livestock.

Companies, schools, and organizations that offer on-the-job skills training, certification programs, and tuition reimbursement were among those represented. Jacobson JETS are artists! Third graders are learning about Pablo Picasso and his style of art, known as Cubism. This means his paintings, which were typically portraits or himself or others, showed the person broken apart into many flat shapes. Students had the opportunity to create their own self-portraits in the same style. Using scraps of paper, they added details to their portraits to make them look unique. Thank you to the amazing Arts Masterpiece program!

Perry High School Fine Arts Teacher Lorena DeCristofaro competed in Master Chef Latinos. She selected amongst thousands of applicants to fly to Mexico City to be in a live cooking casting/competition. Every episode consisted of a cooking challenge to select who was saved from elimination. Episodes included being in a farm, plucking and butchering chickens, scaling and butchering whole huge fish, cooking in outdoor grills for Bikers, one was filmed in pyramid settings including only pre-hispanic ingredients (and insects!). She made it to the top 6. Congratulations Lorena. Episodes can be seen YouTube under Master Chef Latinos 2022.
