She has helped to develop the DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) program on ACP's campus and is currently a DECA State Officer. Competing at both state and national levels, she has earned 1st place in Buying and Merchandising Operation Research Event at the State Career Development Conference. She also received the DECA Speakers Bureau Award. Mackenzie also achieved athletic honors as a four-year varsity athlete. She has been recognized as Arizona All Academic Cross Country First Team, Soccer Player of the Game and Track MVP. Susan's commitment to academics doesn't stop with her. She is the president of Arizona College Prep's Tutor Club, pairing students with peer mentors, scheduling times and places for them to meet. Susan is also involved in several clubs and organizations on campus: Spanish Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, National Honor Society, Comic Club and Mu Alpha Theta Club.     Email this item to a friend Open just this item  Divider and spacer Koen SymallaVisit Chandler Early College WebsiteReport a Problem with Item A007126Chandler Early College - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Koen Symalla came to Chandler Early College as a freshman and has been a consistent performer academically as well as a model citizen representative of the student body. In addition to CEC, Koen has attended East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) for the last year, studying Emergency Medicine. Recently, he and a partner competed in the Emergency Medical Technician portion of the Arizona HOSA Competition. The event consisted of two rounds. The first round involved a multiple choice and written test. In the second round, the two showcased their hands-on skills. Not only did the pair score the highest written score of the event, but the duo ultimately took 1st place overall in the state. The pair will now head to Orlando in June for the HOSA International Leadership Conference. After high school, Koen plans on attending the Pima Medical Institute to become a paramedic. In April, he placed in the top 10 in the "Professional Selling" category at the International DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) competition in Orlando, Florida after competing against more than 200 students from around the world. Additionally, he was the only student from CUSD to move onto finals, and one of about 15 students from Arizona to make it to the top 10. Sam has been accepted into Barret, The Honors College at ASU. He received a plaque and a $500 check. Additionally, his application will go onto compete in the next round for a chance at that national award.

He was one of 120 student cadets from around the world accepted into the inaugural class of the U.S. Air Force Flight Academy, where he earned a pilot's license. Carson was awarded the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Cadet of the Year for Arizona. He is currently a unit commander in JROTC. In addition, Carson is busy serving as Executive Officer of fundraising for Hamilton's Student Government and worked as President of LINK Crew for the past two years. In his free time, he has managed to earn the highest rank in Boy Scouts, the prestigious Eagle Scout. Carson will be attending the University of Colorado Boulder on a Marine ROTC Scholarship. Destinee placed first at the Chandler Film Festival for her Public Service Announcement. Her college submission short film on mental health won several awards. She is currently serving as president for both Drama Club and Film Club, as well as vice president of Urban Lemmings, an improv troupe. Ellen attended Teen Leadership Academy her junior year and had the opportunity to intern with the Chandler Mayor for a week. Ellen represented Hamilton at Arizona Girls State this year. He is the number one bass in the state this year. He plans to pursue music in college. Tyler is a hard worker and a gifted teacher. He currently student-teaches the junior high advanced choir, and they respond very well to his leadership, humor, and musical know-how. Tyler has held a leading role in every musical during his 4 years here. He is a gifted actor in our company theatre program and is also is a successful playwright. Tyler served as the Casteel marching band's drum major (conductor) during his sophomore year. He plays several instruments and is an all-around top-notch musician and performer. Additionally, Zachary was one of three drummers nationwide selected to participate in Berkley's College of Music Master Summit where he got to play with Jeff Coffin from the Dave Matthews band and also work with drummer Chester Thompson. She has also been a part of the Hamilton girls tennis team. Outside of school, Olivia volunteers as a teacher assistant at Hope Chinese School on Saturdays, and she enjoys art, photography and playing tennis. Olivia earned the AP Distinguished Scholar award this year. Next year, Olivia plans to attend Barrett Honors College at ASU where she will major in Software Engineering. Hamilton orchestra students did well overall, with six accepted (Grace Zhang, Zocelyne Kow, Christine Lee, Brandon Tang, Ryan Widjaja and Colin Guan) and one first alternate. These exceptional musicians will participate in the upcoming festival at NAU, April 11-13. This achievement represents the highest honor an Arizona high school musician can earn.

Northrop Grumman (previously Orbital) launched the Antares rocket last week. Andersen Junior High was the only school in Arizona selected to participate in the ThinSat Program, guaranteeing them a spot on this rocket launch. The rocket will release the satellite to orbit Earth for five to ten days, collecting data on atmospheric pressure, temperature, velocity, altitude, and UV light. Students in Joe Badala's class launched prototypes on a helium balloon on campus to collect low atmospheric data. Gearing up for this rocket launch, students conducted a series of these launches, tethering some balloons and releasing others. They also sent a prototype on a weather balloon. Teddy carries with him a solid 3.3 GPA and has been an active member of Student Council for the last two years. He is a past recipient of the CEC Character Award for Trustworthiness. He has been a student at EVIT for the last two years, studying Information Technology and Engineering Careers (iTEC). Recently, Teddy competed in the Interactive Media and Game Design Competition at the SkillsUSA Arizona Championships. He and his partner took first place in the state. In June, both will compete at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference competition in Kentucky. Upon graduation, Teddy will be attending Chandler Gilbert Community College before transferring to a four-year university to complete his bachelor's degree in either Computer Science or Computer Programming and Game Design. She competed against the top Junior Olympic level 10 gymnasts from California, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada in her age group. Cienna won the All-Around bronze medal after competing in all four events: Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, and Floor Exercise. Cienna's third place finish earned her a spot to compete at Junior Olympic nationals to be held next month in Indianapolis. The best level 10 gymnasts from across the country qualify to nationals. They traveled to Tucson to compete against other high schools across Arizona in the FCCLA State Leadership Conference and all earned GOLD Medals after earning the top scores in their competitive public speaking category division. Macy Parris presented about the importance of teaching young children and their families about proper nutritional habits and exercise to prevent the epidemic of childhood obesity in our country. Lauren "Wren" Leon, Aliyah Cortez and Paige Silva competed as a team about the importance of promoting language and literacy during the early childhood years to increase cognitive and brain development. Their hard work and dedication to their education should be recognized and applauded.

Jacob is among 150 AFJROTC cadets around the world, and one of only five in Arizona to receive the scholarship from Headquarters AFJROTC. This competition required students to write an essay on artificial intelligence, answer 80 multiple choice questions in science, technology, math, and engineering, and create an apparatus (out of office supplies) that could lift a teddy bear out of a box. They were judged on the amount of materials used and well as the execution, which is a true representation of how engineering in real life works. Team B placed 1st in the state, and Team A placed 2nd in the state! Additionally, our teams placed 22nd and 28th respectively in the nation in our division.

Students from Hamilton competed against some of Arizona's top high school Quizbowl teams at the ASU Tempe Campus on March 23. After finishing at the top of the standings in the Varsity division, the team stormed through the playoffs before facing off against a tough Corona del Sol team. After a tough back-and-forth two game final, the team was crowned as the state champs. Because of their hard work, the Quizbowl team has qualified for the 2019 High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT) for the third straight year which will take place in Atlanta from May 24-26. Through the Lead2Feed Student Leadership Program, students develop 21st century leadership skills and project based learning standards. Basha High Early Childhood Education students developed and implemented a service learning project to bring art lessons to over 400 students at Bologna Elementary every quarter during the 2018-2019 school year. The Lead2Feed Student Leadership Program awarded a $500 charitable grant based on the outstanding work of the Basha High students. Last week Basha High teacher Mrs. Alexander and her students presented the check to the principal, Dr. Padilla, and students at Bologna Elementary.

In addition to Basha High capturing the girls title, Stefana Jelacic of Chandler High (118 pounds) and Jennifer Curry of Hamilton High (160 pounds) won individual championships. CUSD had four individual state champions among the boys. Zach Espalin of Chandler High (113 pounds), Alex Rodriguez of Basha High (126 pounds), Joe Carey of Basha High (182 pounds) and Nathaniel Deasey of Chandler High (220 pounds) brought home medals. More than 2,000 students entered the competition this year. Samihan and Mindy will each receive $2,000, and Hamilton will also receive $2,000 per scholar to use toward STEM-related activities. This program encourages young people ages 11-13 to create a poster on a different theme selected annually by Lions International. The theme for this year was "Kindness Matters." The Sun Lakes club selected the poster submitted by Alexandra Adams of Ryan Elementary forward for state judging. She won at the state level, and her poster has been sent to Lions International for further review. The International winner will receive a $5,000 award and a trip to New York. Good luck, Alexandra! Senior Jacob Conover became the first Arizona quarterback to lead a team to three state titles at the biggest level. Individually, CHS Seniors finished the meet strong; Morgan Foster took 2nd place overall with a time of 18:04 in the 5000 Meter Run, Mihajla Milovanovic finished 11th, and Becca Taylor finished 12th. Leonela Lizarraga and Brooke Eversden, both underclassmen, also ran great times. This team has finished in 1st or 2nd place at State in each of the last four years. Morgan and Mihajla will continue their cross country careers at Stanford and Loyola - Chicago in the fall.

Tristan's 5th place finish out of 89 other 8U boys from 4 different states solidified his spot and earned him a full travel scholarship to compete in Reno. On December 9, he will race the fastest kids in the country for a chance to become a Junior Olympic All American! Good luck, Tristan!

The community relations department, under the direction of Terry Locke, received the highest honor, a Copper Medallion for the district's overall public relations program. They also received an award for the senior highlights social media campaign, and Earnest Robinson, CUSD video specialist, received an award for his photography. Additionally, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce received an ASPRAtions* award in the category of "Individual, Business, Foundation or Civic/Community Organization for Contributions to Public Education," and Jim Bishop received an award in the category of "Advocacy and Political Contributions to Public Education."
