STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: The Basha Bear Regiment won the Arizona State Marching Band Championship for Division 2 bands! On November 19, the Bears performed in the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association (ABODA) event where they secured the win. Perry High School senior Sumaya Quitugua (Acoma Pueblo) is an example of Indigenous Excellence in Chandler Unified School District. The Phoenix Indian Center named Quitugua one of two High School Students of the Year for 2022. She will be honored during a dinner ceremony on Wednesday, November 30 at the Heard Museum in Phoenix. Chandler High teacher Kelsey Brown was named an "Arizona International Baccalaureate (IB) Career Program Teacher of the Year." She teaches IB History as well as the IB Personal and Professional Skills course for all IB Career students. She has worked diligently at helping to foster learning and ethical decision making in her classes and prides herself on helping to make students engaged and intentional learners. The IB Career program helps to promote the CTE courses on our campus as well as provide rigorous academic resources for these students. In turn, it helps create opportunities, such as earning an IB College and Career certificate, college credits and career certifications. Congratulations to Kerri Zitar, winner of the 2022 Arizona Association of Teachers of Mathematics (AATM) Copper Apple Award for Teaching in Mathematics. The Copper Apple Award is the highest recognition awarded annually by the Arizona Association of Teachers of Mathematics to recognize excellence in mathematics education in Arizona. The Copper Apple Award for Teaching is given to one K-12 teacher who has made outstanding contributions in fostering an interest in mathematics among students.Hamilton High (2022-2023)
Hamilton's AFJROTC instructors were recognized by the Director of Air Force Junior ROTC, Colonel Johnny McGonigal, as "Outstanding Instructors" for 2022. This award recognizes the top 10% of 1,800+ AFJROTC instructors worldwide. In a letter to the CUSD Superintendent and Hamilton High School Principal, Colonel McGonigal recognized the efforts of Lt Col Franklin and Hamilton's 20-year Aerospace Science Instructor, Master Sergeant Fred Driver: "These professional educators 'represent the 'Best of the Blue' we have in AFJROTC. Through this award, we honor their exemplary contributions and impact on their cadets, school, and community."Hamilton High (2022-2023)
Hamilton High's Air Force Junior ROTC program was recently recognized as a 2022 "Distinguished Unit, With Merit" by Headquarters AFJROTC. This is AFJROTC's highest-level unit award and the distinction places Hamilton's corps of cadets in the top 10% of the 870 AFJROTC units worldwide. According to the Director of Air Force Junior ROTC, Colonel Johnny McGonigal, "These awards recognize the personal growth and accomplishments of the cadets, contributions of the instructors as mentors, and the support of the school and local community. " During his presentation of the award to the cadets, Lieutenant Colonel Greg Franklin, Hamilton's Senior Aerospace Science Instructor, recognized their leadership and organizational skills which resulted in the unit receiving an 'Exceeds Standards' on their SY2022 triennial formal HQ inspection. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Frederick Changho attended ACP since freshman year. He joined the speech & debate team and became a member of the team's leadership council. He won his senior year's State Championship in Public Forum Debate and qualified for the Congressional Debate summer 2022 at the National Speech and Debate Tournament. He was awarded with the NSDA Seal of Outstanding Distinction and recognized as an Academic All-American. He also earned the highest possible ACT score and graduated summa cum laude as an AP Scholar with Distinction. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Riley Mayes played soccer and was a Science is Fun, Girls XSTEM, and National Honor Society member while being academically driven and taking rigorous courses. Riley gave back to the community through Hugs for the Holidays and campus clubs. She was received the 4.0 Award all four years and was named an AP Scholar with Distinction and a National Merit Finalist. Riley earned the National Merit Scholarship from the University of Arizona, the Solara Ladies Club Scholarship, and the Dean's Exemplary Award Scholarship. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Meghana Tripuraneni worked as an early learner instructor at a tutoring center, a volunteer at four organizations and a member of eight extra curriculars including Girls XSTEM, Science is Fun, and LEO Club. As part of her Basha Gives Back Project, she promoted awareness about holistic healthcare for hospitalized children and raised $3,000 towards UofA's Infectious Diseases Research and Training Fund. Meghana was a HOSA (formerly Health Occupations Students of America) Nutrition 2nd & 3rd place finisher in 2021 and 2022, a National Spanish 2 Examination Silver winner, and a National Spanish 3 Examination Bronze winner. She earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish. Meghana earned three scholarships including the National Merit Scholarship. She hopes to become a pediatric oncologist and attend medical school, so she will attend the University of Arizona Honors College to major in physiology and medical sciences and minor in psychology. Exemplary Principal: Congratulations to principal Rob Bickes who was surprised with the prestigious Exemplary Principal Award from Steve Watson, Maricopa County School Superintendent on May 13. Watson is recognizing leaders who understand the connection between a thriving school culture and high levels of student achievement and teacher retention. These leaders intentionally and strategically nurture school environments where teacher and student voices set and realize the school's vision. They lead schools where students achieve academically and emotionally, and teachers are inspired to remain at the school and in the profession. Award recipients undergo a rigorous evaluation that involves a superintendent nomination, application, teacher survey, video interview, site visit and extensive data review.Chandler Unified School District (2021-2022)
CUSD students participated in the VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, TX. This year more than 20,000 students from 49 states and 36 countries participated at the VEX Worlds competition. The following high school students, competing together as Team 2647X Endgame, won the "Robot Skills Award" -- one of the top four awards of the entire competition. These talented students began their robotics path as sixth and seventh graders at ACP Oakland and decided to remain together as a private team since they attend different high schools. STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Sophomore Andrew Yang won the AIA Div. 3 state singles championship at the Paseo Racquet Center. Andrew, seeded No 2, beat No. 4 Jacob Kauffman in the championship match 6-2, 7-6. The ACP High School tennis program is coached by John Deogracias.Basha High (2021-2022)
Junior Aria Hewett placed second overall Academic Decathlon National Competition. She earned 7 out of 8 possible subject medals. This competition was open to all students who placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in their respective state competitions. Aria qualified by placing 3rd in Arizona in March.Casteel High (2021-2022)
Casteel High School concert choir and jazz choir recently went to San Diego with Casteel symphonic band to compete in the Worldstrides music festival. Chorale received a gold scoring 2nd place in concert choir division. Encore Jazz choir got a gold rating and 1st place in their category. The symphonic band got a silver rating with a 3rd place finish. The combined jazz, chorale and band scores earned Casteel the grand prize: Sweepstakes trophy, given to the school with the highest combined scores!Hartford Sylvia Encinas Elementary (2021-2022)

Congratulations to Hamilton's Cyber Security students who competed in the national cyber security competition, Cyberstart. Cyberstart is "capture the flag"-based competition where students complete real world challenges involving cryptography, programming, network security, and forensics. Nationwide there were 45,962 students competing this year. In Arizona, 29 students qualified as National Semifinalists, and seven of them are from Hamilton. These students are now in the competition to earn the top awards and scholarships. Arizona College Prep Middle School (2021-2022)
ACP Middle School students Nicolas Acedo (8th grade, pictured left) and Emilio Acedo (7th grade, pictured right), participated in the Junior International Karate Cup in Las Vegas. Nicolas won a silver medal in Kumite and a bronze medal in Kata. Emilio won a silver medal in Kumite. Both were representing Chandler Martial Arts Center.Auxier Elementary (2021-2022)
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Auxier Elementary sixth grader Lundyn Smith has been a SUPERSTAR on the Casteel Junior High Academic Pentathlon team this year. During the state competition Lundyn was named 1st in the state in three of the five events and the top sixth grader in science. She was #1 overall for honors sixth graders. She also beat all honors seventh graders and only one honors eighth grader outscored her. Lundyn and Casteel advance to Nationals which will be held in about a month. Arizona is one of the top states in Pentathlon, so she is a legitimate contender for National Champion. Coach Sheila Wilson is very excited to have her join the pentathlon class next year. Eighty CUSD students from the Class of 2022 earned a fine arts diploma seal! The Arizona State Seal of Arts Proficiency is awarded to students who have demonstrated high levels of proficiency and commitment to the Arizona Arts Education Standards through personal expression and creative experiences. Students focus on one or more artistic disciplines: visual arts, theatre, music, dance, and media arts.Hamilton High (2021-2022)
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Students from Hamilton High School were crowned Arizona State Champions in the David Ricardo Economics Challenge. They now advance to national semi-finals. On Friday April 15, 28 Hamilton students competed in the Arizona Economic Challenge Competition held at Mesa Community College. Rachel Kan, Chloe Zhan, Kenny Wang, and Andy Ma are Arizona State Champions in the David Ricardo Economics Category. A second team of Kevin Li, Arnav Nigam, Vivienn Burnett and Arhan Sankhla took first place in Personal Finance Challenge and Ryan Gan, Aditya Patel, and Vihaan Hari received the Judges Award in Personal Finance Case Study. Chandler High had five students participate at the All-State Honor Choir Festival at NAU, Flagstaff. This 200-voice group had the top musicians audition a solo and sight read for a judge. These students also made the Regional Honor Choir, which qualified them for the All-State level. STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Congratulations to Emma Weiss, Chandler High School Freshman, and National History Day State winner! The National History Day state competition was April 9-10 and was held virtually, and Emma is one of eight CUSD students to win and move on to Nationals June 12-16. Emma's project is titled You've Got a Friend in Me: The Importance of Grassroots Diplomacy in Post-War Reconciliation as Demonstrated by German-American Friendship Clubs.Chandler High (2021-2022)

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: The Basha AMS Academic Pentathlon team finished 1st place in Arizona, taking the STATE CHAMPIONS title for the second year in a row!
