Santan Junior High (2023-2024)
Donna Gustafson, a Social Studies teacher at Santan Junior High, was chosen to take part in National History Day's professional development program for fall 2023. This program utilizes the resources available in the online Library of Congress to enhance the development and backing of historical arguments. This opportunity is made possible through NHD's affiliation with the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Consortium. Donna's selection is particularly noteworthy, as she is one of just seven educators in Arizona to receive this prestigious honor.
Willis Junior High (2022-2023)
Susana Ceballos, media assistant at Willis, is one of three CUSD recipients of the Intel Teacher Diversity STEAM Grant in 2022. She begins student teaching next semester. Susana receives $1,200 which can go toward schooling and education.

I would first like to thank our incredible principal Jeff Delp for nominating me and being such a supporting and encouraging presence in our school. I am so excited to be able to use the scholarship to help make my future classroom a welcoming and warm place for students."

Emilio Acedo, ACP Middle School eighth grader, won a bronze in Kumite and a bronze in Kata in the 2022 National Karate Championships in Spokane, WA in July. Emilio represented Chandler Martial Arts Center, Chandler, AZ.

On May 13, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce surprised office manager Cheri Smith with the 2022 Support Staff of the Year award. She will be recognized at an awards dinner on June 2 at the Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino.

ACP Middle School students Nicolas Acedo (8th grade, pictured left) and Emilio Acedo (7th grade, pictured right), participated in the Junior International Karate Cup in Las Vegas. Nicolas won a silver medal in Kumite and a bronze medal in Kata. Emilio won a silver medal in Kumite. Both were representing Chandler Martial Arts Center.

Payne Junior High eighth grader and golf club member, Trevor Rogers, had a perfect shot on No. 6 at Fountain of the Sun Country Club that found the bottom of the cup in one shot, A HOLE IN ONE, at their match versus Eastmark. Way to go, Trevor!

Payne Junior High students in David Giaramita's English Language Arts class wrote hypothetical backstories to the article, The Rampaging Pigs of San Francisco by Thomas Fuller of The New York Times. The author then read their adventures and loved it so much he agreed to have a zoom call with the students. The kids were so excited to be part of this. What a great experience!

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Congratulations to Than Tsay and Thanvi Voruganti for winning 1st place in the Junior Individual Website category at the National History Day State competition April 9-10. Ethan's website was titled "Baldwin V. Buckley: The Debate of the American Dream," and Thanvi's website was titled "Dave Brubeck: Diplomacy Through Jazz." Ethan and Thanvi were among top two entries in their category at the state/affiliate level, and are now invited to the National Contest to be held virtually June 12-16.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Congratulations to Abbie Johnson, Clara Olpin, Hana Gerstberger and Alexia Heaton for winning 1st place in the Junior Group Performance category at the National History Day State competition with their presentation "The Equal Rights Amendment." Abbie, Clara, Hana and Alexia were among top two entries in their category at the state/affiliate level, and are now invited to the National Contest to be held virtually June 12-16. Willis Junior High is proud to continue their strong tradition of sending student to National Competition.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Santan Junior High School drumline won the WGAZ (Winter Guard Arizona) State Championship on April 2-3. Additionally, the Santan band director Mike Hancock was named the WGAZ Director of the Year.

Arizona College Prep Middle School had 29% of Arizona's 7th and 8th grade Arizona Science and Engineering Fair (AzSEF) winners this year! There were 20 projects chosen to go to Broadcom MASTERS® (the Nation's Premier Middle School STEM Competition), and ACP Middle School submitted 40% of those projects. Our students and science teachers work incredibly hard on Science Fair projects. Congratulations to all participants!
