    • Andersen Junior High Knowledge Bowl has placed 1st in state competitions more times than any other junior high school.

Jackson Nichols and Mark Doorly created a web site, Atomic Bomb: A Vote to Kill Millions. They earned second place medals and will be going to the national competition in June in Maryland. Ireland Mackenzie, Jessica Webb, Austin Jones and Cortney Reagle wrote and acted in a performance, 50s Rock and Roll: Was It Just Music? They earned third place medals and are alternates for the national competition.

    • Hamilton Prep was one of 16 winning teams in the Lexus Eco Challenge. As part of their efforts to improve the environment, they worked with the Arizona Forestry Department in Payson, to increase biodiversity by planting trees in the forest. Their hard work was rewarded by a first prize of $10,000 to be split between themselves, their teacher, and the school.

(All Willis bands have been awarded high rankings at the state band festivals. The Willis Jazz Band has been featured as a top performing ensemble at The Arizona Music Educators Conference in 2007, 2009, and 2010. Their highest achievement was their performance at The Midwest Clinic in Chicago in December 2009. This Clinic is the largest music convention in the world, attended by over 15,000 musicians and only one Junior High Jazz band is selected to perform each year.)
    • A Willis Junior High seventh grade team competed against 20 other schools from across the valley in the 5 Cs of Arizona art contest sponsored by the Arizona State Fair in 2010. The entire project was student created and produced. Fair patrons and Facebook followers got to vote for the project they liked the best. The Willis Junior High team won by a landslide and won $600.
    • Willis Junior High won 3rd place in the 2010 fall Knowledge Bowl competition.
    • 2010 -- Jacelyn O'Roark, French, AVID and computer teacher, at Willis Junior High was selected as the Arizona Junior High Schools student council advisor of the year.
    • 2010 -- Willis Junior High, had seven state champions in the National History Day (NHD) competition.

     


    Junior High Schools Making a Difference

     

    • Andersen Junior High students made 3,400 paper cranes to help with the relief efforts in Japan. Two dollars were donated for every crane created. AJHS raised $6,800.
    • 2010 -- Andersen Junior High CATS students have been doing some walking – 1,400 miles to be exact. Students participated in a Walk-a-thon to raise more than $1,000 dollars while getting some exercise. The walk-a thon was a key component of the problem based learning activity for CATS students and also fulfilled community service hours for the IB Middle Years program. The money was donated to the Children's First Academy in Phoenix - the nation's largest school for homeless children.
    • 2010 -- The Andersen Angels from Andersen Junior High, a community service club, organized a pasta collection contest to benefit the United Food Bank. In less than two weeks, 34 students collected 6,400 bags or boxes of pasta.
    • Hamilton Prep's Spanish Club, Amigos Juntos, headed up a Penny War which netted nearly $2,000. This money was used to build a home for a homeless family in Guaymas, Sonora Mexico through the charity Castaway Kids. The recipient family is seen in front of their new home surrounded by volunteers who help build it. Amigos Juntos also sponsors a Mexican student's school scholarship through the scholarship arm of Castaway Kids, Adelante Estudiante
    • 2010 -- In just five days, students at Payne Junior High School raised more than $5,000 to donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The penny drive, sponsored by National Junior Honor Society, was an overwhelming success. 2010 was the third year students at Payne dug deep in their pockets and broken into their piggy banks to donate to fight cancer. In the past the penny drive lasted three weeks but was shortened to five days in 2010. “Payne has placed in the top 10 schools in Arizona the last two years, and last year was the fifth school in the state in terms of donation amount,” said Lacey Wilson, Payne's NJHS co-sponsor. Payne Junior High National Junior Honor Society has raised over $22,111.25 in total for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
    • Payne Junior High National Junior Honor Society has completed over 500 hours of community service hours.
    • In 2010, Santan Junior High Student Council collected 1,945 pairs of shoes to send to Africa as part of the Lightfeetproject.org program. The team obliterated their goal of 750 pairs of shoes.
    • 2010 -- Kerry Langten, health assistant at Santan Junior High, traveled to Haiti to provide medical assistance through the Children of the Nations program.
