First, they made a plan for the designs and discussed thrust and lift. Next, they tested the airplanes. Some students were disappointed with their product so they redesigned keeping in mind lift. Finally, they tested again and had success.

Carlson grade levels are collecting coins to help give the "boot" to Cancer. Mayor Kevin Hartke, Police Chief Sean Duggan and Fire Chief Tom Dwiggins all came out to talk to the kids about giving back. Additionally, Carlson Cancer survivors were honored. The Carlson Kindness Club, in conjunction with PTO and the Chandler Police are coordinating this great effort.

Each student walked three miles while carrying a gallon of water. After a semester long unit about learning about the impact of water on the lives of all people and the effects that culture and social norms can play in the shaping of one's identity, the students were inspired to create a fundraiser. The students wanted to raise enough money to help provide access to wells and clean water for the people of South Sudan. So far, Gahn's Gorillas have raised over $500!

The funds help to pay for Ira's intense 3-4 week therapy camp at the VIP Neurorehabilitation Center in California. The Riggs community is "Ira Strong."

    UPDATE: The Ira Run this year raised over $20,000! We were able to raise enough funds for Ira to attend her specialized therapy AND have enough funds to fulfill special grant requests to help other kids as well!

All used and unwanted markers are being collected in each classroom. The program has been a huge success so far with over 1,000 markers in less than a month! Once the markers are collected, they are shipped to Crayola where they get recycled. Any type of marker can be recycled, no matter the brand or type. We have collected highlighters, Expos, Sharpies, fat and skinny markers of all kind. We are throwing away less plastic in our landfills and protecting our environment. Way to go, Basha Bobcats! They then walked through the steps and realized some were missing when they tried to follow them. They talked about New Year's resolutions, school related goals, and the importance of knowing and following all of the steps to achieve them.

Hot Lava is a team building activity with an emphasis on communication. The object is to get their entire team across the lava field without burning up! The only way to get across is to use the special "lava-proof paper" provided. Students were in teams of 6 to 7 and provided with 8 pieces of paper. If anyone stepped off of the paper, the entire team had to start over.

They are recycling plastic water bottles to hold and release water under the soil. They added tomatoes, basil, and other herbs they've been growing inside their classroom under lights for the last 2 months. This project was made possible by a grant from Chandler Education Foundation Cash for Classrooms campaign. It's exciting to learn where our food comes from, what plants need and what they give, how they fit into our environment, and how we can be good stewards of our Earth. They will continue studying plants using microscopes and monitoring them in our school's greenhouse.

Altogether, they raised $104.46. Students voted to donate the money to Arizona Friends for Life, a nearby no-kill animal shelter. The money will be used to purchase needed items for dogs and cats, such as food, leashes and collars. 100 Day Cent was part of our Kindness Quarter here at Basha Elementary.
