Welcome!
Welcome to Patterson's music program! Thank you for visiting my webpage.
My Education and Professional Background
I was so inspired by my own experience with music that I wanted to share it with others. I studied Music Education at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. I graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor degree in Music Education. I started my teaching career in Indiana for four years and then moved to Arizona. I have taught all ages from K-12 throughout my career, but my heart belongs at the elementary level. I love starting students on their musical journey! We are able to experience music in so many ways! While I've taken many graduate courses to continue my learning, I've found one type of class that really enhances my teaching. These are the Orff Schulwerk levels and I've taken them at ASU> The Orff Process, which is a method of teaching music to children, has transformed my classroom. By using the Orff Process, students can immediately take part in music activities by moving creatively, playing instruments, and singing. Every child is able to experience the joy of music right away!
My Educational Philosophy
I believe that every child is capable of singing and enjoying music. I believe every child can read, sing, play, move and create music. We start at a simple level by exploring all kinds of musical experiences and build our way to reading, writing and creating music. We can easily add in creative and choreographed movement and instruments. Music is a natural and vital part of our human experience. It feeds the soul and allows us to see and feel more of the beauty in the world. Beyond music's inherent points, it is all around us in our lives. We are surrounded by it in our TV shows, movies, phones, holidays, classrooms, and more. Studying some of the patterns and building blocks of music allows us to appreciate the music around us in a deeper way. Enjoy the music around you!
