Lewis Alexander
SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Lewis Alexander has been a part of the Basha community for seven years, as he is also a former Basha AMS (Accelerated Middle School student). Lewis has taken multiple AP courses and maintained a 4.6 GPA, but is best known as "Mr. Lewis" in his role in our early childhood education program, where he was hired this year as an after school care worker. He is a National AP Scholar, and is receiving a national certification, the Child Development Associate credential. He was a member of the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and won gold medals at state and national competitions for his contribution to our community service project, Petite Picassos. Lewis plays the guitar and drums and is a member of the National Honor Society, Chinese National Honor Society and Science is Fun. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Alec Tenorio has been an active member and officer of the Basha DECA (formerly Distributive Education Clubs of America) chapter for the past two years. His hard work and dedication have helped him achieve numerous medals at the DECA District and State competition levels, qualifying him to compete at the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Nashville, Tennessee. Unfortunately, ICDC had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, and Alec wasn't able to showcase his knowledge and skills. In addition, Alec has been instrumental in the success of the Grizzly Shack where his outgoing and kind personality assists students and staff on campus daily. SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Ahlias Jones loves Arizona College Prep with all of his heart. After serving as Sophomore and Junior Class president, Ahlias become the student body president this year. He demonstrated leadership as a starter on the football team, an international qualifier in his DECA (formerly Distributive Education Clubs of America) category, as well as an officer of the Black Student Union. Ahlias' love of sports provided him with several opportunities to impact Arizona high school athletics as part of the AIA Student Leadership Advisory Council and the CUSD Student Organization of Leaders, which he co-founded. Shifting focus to his collegiate career, he was selected for ASU's Leadership Scholarship Program and was awarded the Medallion Scholarship. Graphic Design Students
Eight students from Caryn Butler's graphic design level 2 and 3 classes competed in an Advertising Design competition at the Region 3 conference of SkillsUSA. Approximately 60 students from various east valley schools competed. Four of the eight students scored in the top ten and qualified to attend the SkillsUSA State Championships in April: Holly Hames, Nicole White, Maria Durrans, and Abby Kozel. Holly took the silver medal, placing 2nd out of all of the participants. Congratulations to all of the Perry Pumas who participated in this challenging competition!

Culinary students from CUSD took the top three spots in a statewide competition on January 11, Feeding the Future 2020: School Lunch-Inspired Bites and Beverages, hosted by the Blue Watermelon project, an initiative of Slow Food Phoenix. We are proud to announce our winners:

Each team spent months testing and costing recipes with the help of Blue Watermelon Project chefs to better understand the challenge schools face everyday: how to provide delicious, nutritious and affordable lunches to students. The JA Student Stock Market Challenge is a live stock market simulation, featuring teams of high school students who compete to see who can accumulate the highest possible net worth in their investment portfolio. The exciting, fast-paced event offers a taste of what it's like to build a portfolio, manage risk, and experience its performance in a compressed period of time. Approximately 430 students (86 teams, five students per team) from around 20 valley high schools experienced the thrill of the trading floor at Junior Achievement's 2019 Stock Market Challenge Event. Perry's Concolor Yearbook staff won First Place in General Excellence at the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association's Fall Convention for their 2019 book But Who's Counting? James Flannery's architectural drafting students took a tour of new construction in downtown Chandler and asked many questions. Thanks to Layton Construction, Whitneybell Perry Inc., and especially project manager Lisa Shea, Hamilton architecture students were able to tour a four-story office building, one-story commercial space, outdoor recreation plaza and hotel, and the new parking garage site. Lead4Change Certified School
Once again, the Basha High School FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) Early Childhood chapter was one of 33 schools from across the country that has earned the Lead4Change Certified School honor in recognition for its inspiring community service work and demonstration of leadership. Lead4Change is a student leadership program which provides leadership lessons that align with 21st century skills and integrate literacy, social-emotional learning, and project-based learning standards. Additionally, Lead4Change provides financial support to help students with their community service projects as they apply leadership lessons and address specific needs in our community. Stop the Bleed
Dr. Darren Johnson's Sports Medicine students participated in a program called "Stop the Bleed" in partnership with Dignity Health. The program teaches students to tie a tourniquet, recognize arterial bleeds and other lacerations, stuff deep puncture wounds, and apply direct pressure to any bleeding. It includes vocabulary, explanation of wounds, pictures, and then a hands-on session. Congratulations to all students who completed the training and earned "Stop the Bleed" certification.

Two Chandler High FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America)-Early Childhood teams competed at the National Competition in Anaheim, CA. Chandler's teams competed against the top two teams in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Stevie Garcia and Valerie Valdez won a silver medal in Chapter in Review . Paloma Ramirez and Marissa Palmerin won a silver medal for their Chapter Service Project: Yuda Bands.

Alexis Ngo and Quincy Lee, upcoming seniors in our CTE Sports Medicine Program, competed at the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) International Leadership Conference (ILC) during the summer of 2019. This is the first time Casteel High has ever attended the highest competition for HOSA. Both ladies faced tough competition from around the country and world including China, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa. Quincy fell short to the fierce competitors in her event for Medical Terminology while Alexis place 2nd overall in her event, Extemporaneous Health Poster! We're SO PROUD! Hamilton Theatre
Hamilton Theatre won several state awards after their performance on May 24 at ASU Gammage. Our musical was in the top ten for the state for Best Musical, we won for Best Costumes, and Sophia Donnell won Best Lead Female. Sophia will go on to represent Arizona in New York City for the national competition, The Jimmy Awards. She won an all-expense paid trip for a training camp at NYU and then will perform in the same theatre as Lion King.
