5 tips for staying safe in summer
MAY 27, 2022
COMMUNITY EDUCATION NEWS — Summer is finally here! While your kids may want to spend their time outside of the classroom enjoying the outdoors, it is important to be aware of the potential dangers of the sun. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heat kills more than 600 people in the United States each year and drowning is a leading cause of death for children. Most heat related illnesses, deaths, and drownings are preventable, though. It is important to take the necessary precautions to stay safe. Follow these safety tips to have a fun, safe summer!
1. Practice pool safety
Playing in the water can be a great way to beat the heat! Water balloon fights, playing with the hose, and swimming in the pool can all be great summertime activities that use water to cool you down. Make sure to always practice water safety. Diligent supervision of children is necessary when around pools and big bodies of water. Secure your pool with proper barriers. Be clear about a designated pool supervisor to ensure no children are swimming unattended and stay an arm’s length away from small children.
2. Wear sunscreen
When possible, stay in the shade. Make sure to use sunscreen that is SPF 15 or higher. Apply at least 20 minutes before you plan to be in the sun. Reapply at least every 2 hours and sometimes more frequently. When you are sweating a lot or getting out of the pool, you also may want to reapply. Make sure to check the sunscreen you’ve been saving in the cabinet from last summer because it may be expired. Throw away your sunscreen after 1-2 years and get a new bottle to ensure it still works properly.
3. Wear protective clothing
Covering your skin from the sun as much as possible can also help protect your skin from sunburns. In addition to wearing sunscreen, wear long sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats whenever possible. Clothing that has tightly woven fabric gives the best protection. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunglasses will also protect the delicate skin around your eyes from the sun.
4. Hydrate
Hydration is always important, but it is especially important in the hot summer months. This is because we lose water from sweat, and we sweat more in the summer. Drink a lot of water all summer long! Do not wait until you are outside or thirsty to start drinking water. Avoid high-sugar drinks with caffeine or alcohol as these may dehydrate you. Drink water before, during, and after being outside.
5. Take breaks
As much fun as you are having in the sun, make sure to take frequent breaks. It is important to break up your time in the sun to let your body cool down. Call your kids inside or find a way to integrate a break from the sun. Go inside to eat lunch or have a snack. You can also watch a movie for some down time or even practice flashcards.
Consult your doctor with any questions regarding specifics of how to stay safe this summer. In case of an emergency, dial 911.
