Chandler High - (2018-2019) Katherine Chou, a Chandler High junior, was a runner up for the 2019 Congressional Art Show, and her work will hang in Greg Stanton's office until the end of May.
Chandler High - (2018-2019) Ninety-one Chandler High seniors have earned a Seal of Biliteracy on their diplomas and reflected on their transcripts. The seal was created to reward high school students who were proficient in English and at least one other language as evidenced by their performance on a state board approved assessment.

Chandler High - (2018-2019) Da'Jon Walker, Andrew Kirk, Demetrius Warren, Tim Boyd, Javan Ah Quin Jr., Kaipo Magsayo, Jacob Zevallos, and Jon Williams signed letters of intent to play football at the collegiate level.
Chandler High - (2018-2019) Emily Kendall signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at Pacific University Oregon.
Chandler High - (2018-2019) Annika Lagos, Jaden Juarez, Saachi Poddar, Lila Patel, Yvette Mejia, and Trey Lewis have their work on display at Art Intersection in downtown Gilbert. This is a great honor, as there were over 900 entries and only 80 pieces were chosen to be included.
Chandler High - (2018-2019) Chandler High celebrated the accomplishments of 25 AVID graduating seniors during the AVID Senior Celebration and banquet. The seniors, many of whom have been a part of the college-prep elective for four years, have all been accepted to four-year universities and have earned over $350,000 in scholarship offers.
Chandler High - (2018-2019) Twenty Chandler High student-athletes participated in Chandler High's Spring NCAA College Signing Recognition Day and committed to play at the next level. That makes 41 signees this year.
Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Hailey Green of Miss Kilea Thomas's 5th grade class was honored as an April 2019 Town of Gilbert Student of the Month.
Jacobson Elementary - (2018-2019) Jacobson sixth graders worked during fourth quarter on their Genius Hour Projects. The students learned how to sew sling backpacks and worked to fill them with toiletries. These were donated to Hamilton High School to help CUSD students in need. Rajani Rastogi, a social worker for the district, was a guest speaker in one class and invited students to Hamilton High to see how the district manages supplies for underprivileged families. While at Hamilton, Mrs. Wright's class packed 90 supply bags for families, toured the high school and spoke with National Honor Society and Huskies Helping Huskies students, as well as attending a mindfulness session.
Hamilton High - (2018-2019) Jennalynn Fung has been selected as a contributor for the 2019 edition of Apprentice Writer. Her photography piece, Fantasies Woven in Thread, will appear in the publication this fall. Apprentice Writer received student submissions from nearly 20 countries in this 37th year of publication.
Elite Performance Academy - (2018-2019) EPA students learned about Arizona geography and maps by creating and painting 3D topographical maps of Arizona.
Payne Junior High - (2018-2019) Open letter from self-contained Special Education teacher to Payne staff, teachers and students: "Panther Pride, Words can't express the overwhelming pride that Amber and I have in the Payne Staff and students! What an memorable experience you gave the Unified BASKETBALL team today! Payne has truly shown what it means to embrace inclusion and celebrate everyone's successes. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Weinberg held our first Literacy Day on Monday, May 13. Families and the community were invited to enjoy a variety of literacy based activities.
Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Matthew Tucker will graduate from Basha High with perfect attendance (no instances of absence or tardies) over the course of his entire 13 year academic career, remaining diligent and focused on attending and participating in school every day. He ranks 20th in his graduating class and earned a 4.675 GPA. Matthew was awarded the AP + PLTW (Project Lead The Way) Achievement for earning qualifying scores on a combination of three Advanced Placement Exams and Project Lead the Way end-of-course assessments in the Engineering Pathway. He also earned a Career and Technical Education (CTE) certificate in Engineering Sciences, taking four AP courses and the five associated AP tests for those classes. A recipient of the Presidential Scholarship at ASU, Matthew has been accepted into Barrett, the Honors College in pursuit of a Robotics Engineering degree. Basha High Seniors Highlights
Chandler Online Academy - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Victoria Wilson is a senior at Chandler Online Academy who has done so much outside of the traditional school setting. She has not only completed her traditional course work, but she has also completed the Veterinary Assistant Program at EVIT (East Valley Institute of Technology), and she attended and completed a program at the Academy of Equine Dentistry in Idaho. Attending online school has allowed Victoria to keep a rigorous academic course load and be very involved in her passion of working with horses. On top of all these accomplishments, she also received an appointment to the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY! Chandler Traditional Academy - Humphrey Campus - (2018-2019) In appreciation for all they do, volunteers were honored at the annual CTA Humphrey Volunteer Tea Celebration in May. Our volunteers are TEA-rrific!
Sanborn Elementary - (2018-2019) Congratulations to Cameron Knotts, Joshua Holloman, Cameron Sitarz, Gabi Hodgins, Landen Blakes, Natalie Hall, Talon Price, Adan Sanchez-Bernal, Nathaniel Vega, Addison Schattenberg, Cole Benson, and Tyler Cornille, winners in the Young American Poetry Project. The students' poetry will be published in the 25th edition of the Young American Poetry Digest. Poems were judged based on creativity, sensory/figurative images, structure and use of poetic techniques.
Arizona College Prep - Erie Campus - (2018-2019) Congratulations to ACP Erie sophomore Abby Rothert, City of Chandler Trashion Fashion show WINNER in the age 14-17 category. Abby was required to design an outfit out of recyclable materials, and she chose book pages from classics like The Odyssey and To Kill a Mockingbird, and others. Abby's model was her sister, freshman Annabelle Rothert.
Arizona College Prep - Erie Campus - (2018-2019) We are excited to announce that Mrs. Rachna Nath was selected as an Honorable Mention for the Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators 2019, sponsored by the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for 2019. Arizona College Prep - Erie Campus - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Kaitlyn Starks is the first female Arizona College Preparatory athlete to commit to playing at the collegiate level in soccer. Kaitlyn excels in everything she does. She is the current Student Government President and also a member of National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and She's the First. Kaitlyn was awarded Outstanding Student of the Year 2018-19 for her commitment to ACP and her classmates. She will graduate this year as a Distinguished Scholar and has earned an Academic Letter all four years for a GPA far above a 4.0. Kaitlyn is the Varsity Soccer Captain and has also earned an Athletic Letter all four years. Chandler High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Mikaila Williams is a multi-sport athlete, playing both beach and indoor volleyball. As a Distinguished Scholar and member of National Honor Society, she has maintained a 4.44 GPA throughout her high school career. Chandler High - (2018-2019) Chandler High boys volleyball and Coach Bobby Robson won the state championship in a five-set thriller over Mountain View on Saturday, May 11, 2019. The victory is Chandler Volleyball's first state title in school history.

Chandler High - (2018-2019) The Wolf Howl publication team attended a Journalism Education Association convention and participated in a Write-off Competition in Anaheim, California. Two Chandler High students were honored among 3,500 attendees from around the world with two impressive awards. Congratulations to Kailey Shupe for earning Excellent in Commentary Writing, and Selena Haggerty for earning Honorable Mention in Literary Magazine: Poetry.

Hamilton High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Christian Weninger is a member of the Hamilton High Class of 2019. He has been extremely active on campus, participating in DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), Motivational Outreach Organization and FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) Fashion Club. Christian is a persevering entrepreneur and has already established a business where students can display and share their artwork on his online magazine. His company also sells clothing along with planning fashion shows across the valley. Christian is outgoing and conveys his astonishing personality on campus and with everyone he meets. Arizona College Prep - Erie Campus - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Arizona College Prep's Mackenzie Hanson puts 110% into everything she does. She has helped to develop the DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) program on ACP's campus and is currently a DECA State Officer. Competing at both state and national levels, she has earned 1st place in Buying and Merchandising Operation Research Event at the State Career Development Conference. She also received the DECA Speakers Bureau Award. Mackenzie also achieved athletic honors as a four-year varsity athlete. She has been recognized as Arizona All Academic Cross Country First Team, Soccer Player of the Game and Track MVP. Casteel High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Eli Ludwig is a respectful student who leads by example. The way he goes about his business, day in and day out, exemplifies not only the three Cs (Courage, Character, and Commitment) but also what being a baseball player and a short stop is all about. As a three year varsity starter, Eli has proven to be reliable on and off the field. He has been an anchor in the lineup throughout three region championship seasons and earned a spot on the All-State 2nd team during his senior season. Casteel High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Bryce Mortensen consistently exemplifies the three Cs of Courage, Character and Commitment. Bryce has not missed a wrestling practice in three years and is always the last to leave a facility, cleaning up any trash and leaving the the place better than he found it. Casteel High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Madison Officer is consistent in her efforts in calculus as she diligently works and tutors others in the class. She is generous, goal oriented, and positive. Madison has a 4.2 GPA while taking multiple AP classes. In addition to being an outstanding student academically, she also shines artistically in sculpture. Casteel High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Casteel High senior Austin Ponsness has a true gift for working with individuals with special needs. He treats everyone as his best friend and appears equally happy whether on the basketball and volleyball court or working in the special needs classroom as a peer facilitator. Austin is comfortable in his own skin and non-judgmental of others with differences. Austin understands and embraces the hard work necessary to be successful and achieve one's goals. Weinberg Elementary - (2018-2019) Congratulations to Weinberg students Sawyer Alvarado, Gabe Pusz, and Connor Leavy who participated in Mathleague's state level competition and did a remarkable job. Sawyer and Gabe will be representing Chandler Unified at the national competition on June 15th at Texas A & M. Go, Wranglers!
Arizona College Prep - Erie Campus - (2018-2019) Our College and Career Specialist Mrs. Paula Dalton received recognition from the Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education in partnership with the Governor's Office for Education and Achieve60AZ for helping to ensure our senior families completed the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). As a school site, ACP Erie had a 77% completion rate -- which is WAY above the state average!
Hamilton High - (2018-2019) Please congratulate our state champion Boys Double team of Neil Bhardwaja and Rahul Bhat! This is the 2nd year in a row that our Boys Tennis Double team has claimed the state championship. We are so proud of these seniors and Coach Gonzalez for all of their hard work.
Hamilton High - (2018-2019) Our 2019 girl's tennis season came to an end, but not before making an improbable run into the state championship match where Hamilton finished as the state runner up behind Xavier.
Hamilton High - (2018-2019) After four and a half hours of battling with Brophy, the boys tennis team ended with a score of 3-5, state runner-up champions! The boys had an incredible regular season at 13-1 and finishing 2nd in state! We are very proud of these tough young men!
Hamilton High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Akshay Murali has been very involved on campus. He is in the top 20% of his class and has accomplished much in his two years as a Hamilton Husky. He is the vice president of ASCE (American Society Of Civil Engineers) Club and the USA Computing Olympiad. Akshay also participated in Robotics Club and served as treasurer and statistical analyst for Interact. He recently placed 3rd at the Arizona Science and Engineering Fair (AzSEF) in Environmental Engineering. Moreover, Akshay has been very active in the community, volunteering at Feed My Starving Children every week. Hancock Elementary - (2018-2019) Hancock 3rd graders programmed Ozbots with Ozo Blocky to go through an obstacle course they designed.
Arizona College Prep - Erie Campus - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Susan Martin is a National Merit Finalist, Distinguished Scholar and an AP Scholar with Distinction. Susan's commitment to academics doesn't stop with her. She is the president of Arizona College Prep's Tutor Club, pairing students with peer mentors, scheduling times and places for them to meet. Susan is also involved in several clubs and organizations on campus: Spanish Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, National Honor Society, Comic Club and Mu Alpha Theta Club. Amazingly, she still has time to dedicate to playing the oboe in ACP's orchestra. Next year, Susan will attend University of North Texas. ACP Erie Seniors Highlights

Chandler High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Cole Neff played on the Chandler High state champion football team for three years. His senior year, he chose to join the EVIT (East Valley Institute of Technology) program to study firefighting. On May 4, 2019 Cole graduated from the East Valley Regional Cadet Academy as a Fire and Rescue Cadet. He will attend EVIT next year to continue his firefighting career goal and then plans to join the service for firefighting. Chandler High Seniors Highlights
Chandler Online Academy - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Kenadie Cooper has attended all four years of high school at Chandler Online Academy. She is an outstanding young lady who excels in both ice hockey and her academics. Going to online school allowed for her to capitalize on the opportunity to attend the North American Hockey Academy in Vermont during each year, while completing her Honors and AP high school courses with outstanding success. In the fall, she will attend St. Anselm College in New Hampshire, as an NCAA Division I ice hockey player. It has been a privilege to watch Kenadie flourish, competing in a sport she has such a passion for. Her ability to focus, train, learn, live away from home and still keep everything organized will be a tremendous asset to her in this next part of her journey. Hamilton High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Madeline York has enjoyed her four years pole vaulting for the Hamilton Varsity Track and Field team. At the Arizona State Division I Championships, she pole vaulted to a 4th place finish her freshman year and 3rd place finish her junior year. Arizona College Prep - Oakland Campus - (2018-2019) Our ACP Oakland Speech and Debate Team took 3rd place at the Arizona Speech and Debate Coaches Association (ASDCA) Middle School Championships! The team also won many individual medals. Team Timothy Jiang and Aiden Oh along with Team Margaret Wang and Marie Chen took took 3rd place in Public Forum. Dawn Shim and Kate Li took 5th place in Duo Interpretation. In Congress, Gabe Hufmann took 5th place and Sophia Berg won with a first place finish! Way to go, Knights!
Arizona College Prep - Oakland Campus - (2018-2019) ACP Oakland participated in the annual East Valley Conference Master Mathematicians Competition on Saturday, April 27 for our final competition for the year. Each school brought 14 students. All participated individually in the Quick Draw Round (Mental Math), then four students from each school worked together as a cooperative team for the Team Round. The remaining ten students participated in the other individual competition, Buccaneer Round, consisting of a 40-question written exam. When the results were tabulated, ACP did very well. Chandler High - (2018-2019) Congratulations to the Chandler High Girls and Boys Track Teams, 2019 Division I State Track and Field Champions! This is the fourth championship in a row and 13th out of the last 14 years for the girls. The boys are eight-time state champions, and have won State three out of the last four years. Kudos to all of the athletes who won their races and events, including QuaRon Adams for running the 9th fastest U.S. all-time 100 meters for a freshman at 10.49 seconds. His time is a top-five all-time in Arizona as well.
Chandler High - (2018-2019) Kenneth Applegate, Chandler High junior, scored a perfect 36 on the ACT! To put Kenny's achievement in perspective, of the more than 2 million students who took the exam nationally last year, only 2,760 achieved a perfect score. Kenny has a 4.67 GPA, maintains straight A's in all of his classes (including four AP), and plays in the CHS Chamber Orchestra.

Chandler High - (2018-2019) The International Baccalaureate (IB) Boosters held a banquet last week to celebrate the accomplishments of the IB Diploma and Career Program candidates. This is the largest IB graduating class at CHS with 48 Diploma candidates and 18 Career Program candidates. The theme of the banquet was "The World Awaits" with a message to the students and parents to be proud of what they've accomplished and to keep striving to make a difference in the world.
Hamilton High - (2018-2019) Students Jerry Sun (Cornell-bound senior), Travis Zhang (Junior), and Daniel Hsu (ASU-bound senior) are playing a pivotal role as CUSD prepares for the inaugural Summer Equity Symposium - Breaking Barriers for Excellence. The students utilized their coding and tech skills to create an app for symposium attendees. The Breaking Barriers for Excellence app will help the event run smoothly by providing easy access to information about schedules, speakers, and sessions.
Jacobson Elementary - (2018-2019) Congratulations to Chloe Faria, 5th grade student in Mrs. Clapham's class. Chloe won the USA Gymnastics Region 1 Level 6 Beam Championship in Reno. Jacobson Elementary - (2018-2019) Parent volunteer Laura Taylortaft got Jacobson fourth graders excited about bugs with a metamorphosis investigation activity. The students noted the differences in metamorphosis between butterflies, ladybugs and milkweed bugs and had fun in the process!
Chandler Early College - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Koen Symalla came to Chandler Early College as a freshman and has been a consistent performer academically as well as a model citizen representative of the student body. In addition to CEC, Koen has attended East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) for the last year, studying Emergency Medicine. Recently, he and a partner competed in the Emergency Medical Technician portion of the Arizona HOSA Competition. The event consisted of two rounds. The first round involved a multiple choice and written test. In the second round, the two showcased their hands-on skills. Not only did the pair score the highest written score of the event, but the duo ultimately took 1st place overall in the state. The pair will now head to Orlando in June for the HOSA International Leadership Conference. After high school, Koen plans on attending the Pima Medical Institute to become a paramedic. She is a talented artist and recently sold two of her paintings at the Heard Museum Art Show. Brooke also received the Judges Choice Award for her painting titled "Long Ride Home." Casteel High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Casteel senior Sam Perez is an outstanding student. In April, he placed in the top 10 in the "Professional Selling" category at the International DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) competition in Orlando, Florida after competing against more than 200 students from around the world. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Egesi Iheduru has come a long way throughout her four years of high school. Participating in cheer, theatre, and choir, Egesi strives to find multiple chances to make school more enjoyable. With her 4.3 GPA, Egesi always leaves time for her studies which is evident in her being named an AP Scholar with Honor. She has also ventured off campus to find opportunities to express her passions. In the past year, she has earned an Overall Superior ranking in a Solo Musical performance at the Central Arizona Thespian Festival, was a finalist in the U.S. Senate Youth Program, and acted as a Councilwoman in the Town of Gilbert's Mayor's Youth Advisory Committee's Student Government Day. Hamilton High - (2018-2019) Congratulations to Hamilton student Daniel Obarski who was selected as the Boys' Arizona State Winner in the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) Student Athlete Scholarship Competition. Hamilton High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Carson Beck was busy last summer learning to fly. He was one of 120 student cadets from around the world accepted into the inaugural class of the U.S. Air Force Flight Academy, where he earned a pilot's license. Carson was awarded the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Cadet of the Year for Arizona. He is currently a unit commander in JROTC. In addition, Carson is busy serving as Executive Officer of fundraising for Hamilton's Student Government and worked as President of LINK Crew for the past two years. In his free time, he has managed to earn the highest rank in Boy Scouts, the prestigious Eagle Scout. Carson will be attending the University of Colorado Boulder on a Marine ROTC Scholarship. Destinee placed first at the Chandler Film Festival for her Public Service Announcement. Her college submission short film on mental health won several awards. She is currently serving as president for both Drama Club and Film Club, as well as vice president of Urban Lemmings, an improv troupe. Shumway Leadership Academy - (2018-2019) Kindergartener's in Susan Murphy's class held a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) activity building airplanes for the ABC 26 day count down. First, they made a plan for the designs and discussed thrust and lift. Next, they tested the airplanes. Some students were disappointed with their product so they redesigned keeping in mind lift. Finally, they tested again and had success.

Grace took a semester away from Chandler High School to participate in an international exchange program to Argentina during her junior year. Through this experience she was able to bring to life in her classrooms abstract concepts such as cross-cultural understanding and global mindedness when she returned. She wrote her extended essay for her IB diploma in Spanish, a decision that has been empowering and inspirational to her peers and community. As a field goal kicker for Chandler High football he stood out as the player to kick the ball down the middle of the goal post. On the volleyball court, he was often at center stage volleying the ball with tremendous force. Whether field or court, Timothy spent hours at each sport. She zestfully embraces learning, even when the material is difficult for her. Emily is an avid softball player. She was named Pitcher of the Year in both 2017 and 2018. He is co-president of the Youth Equity Stewardship Club where he strives to ensure equity and inclusion for all students, regardless of race, religion, cultural background, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status or nationality, providing them with challenging and equitable learning experiences on Chandler High Campus. He was also the captain of the basketball team the last two years. Participating in these leadership roles has made him resilient and more self-confident within his own skin, making him and others around him better people. He has achieved a 4.31 GPA and will continue his education at Arizona State University studying journalism at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Chandler High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Tenacity is a recurring theme in the life of Lydia Durrett. She is passionate about the arts, and yet has strong analytical skills. Her strengths include the unusual combination of being a singer and an actor whose career goal it is to do mathematical research. Lydia is an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate and has won the respect of her peers, being elected President of the IB Club this year. She is in the top 3% of her class and a National Merit Finalist. She excels in academics and the arts, competing in All-State choir and being a part of four plays and three musicals. Lydia is passionate about sharing her love for fine arts with young people, particularly those who would not experience them otherwise. Chandler High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Morgan Foster is a stellar student-athlete. She is in the top 5% of her class taking mostly AP coursework. She is a multiple time State Champion in Track and Field in the mid-distance races and was State placer in Cross Country. She has helped propel both of these programs to team State titles as well. Morgan was in a severe car crash last year that lead to many surgeries and months of physical therapy, and still came back in time to win the State Championship again in Track and Field. She has overcome significant obstacles, and has given extra effort throughout her four years in high school. Chandler High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Andres Gonzalez-Bonillas is an IB Diploma Candidate with a 4.85 GPA and is fifth in his class. He has completed numerous community service hours outside of school and was one of the World Language Expo Co-Coordinators. Along with her CHS graduation requirements, Anahy is also completing the Medical Assistant Program and is currently participating in an externship with a local family medical office. Chandler High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Brayden Liebrock exemplifies the term "scholar athlete." He has maintained above a 4.0 GPA while enrolled in rigorous honors and AP classes. For over ten years, he has been an active volunteer with the Ryan Thomas Foundation, which raises money to fund life jacket stations in Arizona lakes for boaters to borrow. He has also volunteered his time and talent to Chandler Youth Football. Chandler High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Jessalynn Macias' days in high school were often challenging, and knowing that her graduation day is now approaching proves the importance of persevering through her incredible journey. The hour long drive she traveled daily and the many personal obstacles that often stood in the way of her education could not stop her from rising above it all on the road to achieving her 3.73 G.P.A. and graduating with High Honors. As an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) student all four years at Chandler High, she defines the acronym by showing extraordinary individual determination to achieve her goals. Chandler High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Kimberley Mar is graduating in the top 3% of Chandler High School's graduating class, earned a perfect score on her ACT on her first attempt, and is a National Merit Finalist. Kimberley has enrolled in film and theatre classes as her electives throughout high school and started doing improvisational comedy as an outside hobby. She now teaches improvisation to younger kids, has acted as a scare actor at fundraising haunted houses, and a stage manager for Chandler Youth Theater and our own school's theater productions. Her chosen career path is one that will allow her to continue to influence, empower and inspire others for many years to come. Kimberley wants to make independent films that mean something to the larger community and above all have integrity. She will attend Arizona State University and will major in Film Studies. Chandler High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Elery Martin has been an active and influential member of Chandler High School's FFA (Future Farmers of America) program, winning state FFA competitions and going on to compete and place at the national level. She is passionate about promoting agricultural literacy, and has worked tirelessly to meet her goals. Elery is an International Baccalaureate Career-Related Program Candidate, whose reflective project was titled: "Should a farmer put the health of his/her herd at risk to align with the public's perception of animal health?" Outside of school, she is a dedicated volunteer for multiple organizations. Her service activities have taken her as far as South Africa where she taught sustainable agriculture to adults and children in the community of Mahikeng. She has been a member of Student Council all four years and has provided support to the Unified Sports and Chandler Buddies program at Chandler High. The purpose of Chandler Buddies is to help students with intellectual disabilities. The goal is for students to feel a part of our school, for students to have a role on campus and to have a friend during their high school years. Randi embraced the program and was an active member all four years. Through all of the activities, Randi maintained a 4.47 GPA and will be attending NAU Honors College majoring in Education. Chandler High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Mitchel "Max" Sandlin will be graduating with High Honors having taken a rigorous course load and being a two-sport athlete throughout high school. Max played football all four years (three on varsity) as a defensive-end and linebacker where he earned several recognitions. He has also played lacrosse since he was in 8th grade and was chosen as captain of his team both sophomore and junior years. He was an active member of the CHS Model UN team and even travelled to Boston to participate in the Harvard Model UN. In addition, he has served as treasurer of the hiking club and Vice President of the JPEG Club which goes to show how well rounded he is. Chandler High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Vean Simon IV is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate and Distinguished Scholar. He volunteered countless hours at Feed My Starving Children and balanced academics and athletics. He has been playing basketball since he was 7 and is the only full IB Diploma candidate on the basketball team. His parents instilled in him the desire to travel and an appreciation for embracing other cultures. He has impressively traveled to six of the seven continents (and plans to visit Asia in the future). This fall he will study International Business at Pepperdine University. Chandler High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Cassandra Smith will be graduating as valedictorian of the Class of 2019 with an impressive 4.89 GPA as an IB Diploma Candidate. She has balanced two higher-level science classes and a higher-level math class, the most rigorous curriculum possible. During the summer after junior year, she was selected to participate as a research intern in a University of Arizona lab through the prestigious KEYS Program. In addition to excelling academically, she played basketball for CHS for three years, played the violin, and served as officer for both NHS and Spanish Honor Society. At the end of her junior year, she was the only junior to be awarded the AP National Scholar Award. As an example of her academic maturity, she chose to write her IB Extended Essay on the barriers to female education in Somalia, a topic differing from her long-term goals, in order to ensure a well-balanced perspective. Chandler High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Emily Smith is a multi-talented and extremely creative young lady who has excelled within our FFA program while taking a rigorous curriculum and pursing her passions wholeheartedly! She has been an officer in the CHS FFA chapter for the past three years and serves as President this year. She placed 1st individually in Arizona for Floriculture and won a gold medal at Nationals. Some of her many talents include learning to raise prize-winning chickens in an urban backyard, teaching herself to make her own instruments in woods (a hammered dulcimer and a 26-string lap harp) and then teaching herself how to play them, and growing and nurturing as many as 32 houseplants at one time! In addition, she was a National Merit Commended Student and will have earned an outstanding 37 college credits by the time that she graduates. He is an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Candidate, National Honor Society president and a member of the Speech and Debate team and the Academic Decathlon team. He has been a volunteer at Dignity Health for two years and participates in the American Red Cross club. He took 5th at the State Golf Tournament (Top CHS finisher in at least the last 20 years) and was Honorable Mention for Arizona Boys Golfer of the Year. He was the CHS 2018 Boys State representative, received "Best Judge" Award and was asked to come back as a 2019 Boys State Counselor! He has been a key member of the CHS Student Council for the last 3 years and a proud member of National Honor Society. Casteel High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Timothy Mayhew started wrestling at Casteel on May 5, 2016, which was the first night he ever put on wrestling shoes. He worked very hard in his three seasons to overcome a late start in the sport and qualified for State all three years, including a 5th place at State finish this year. Timothy was selected on to the All CUSD Wrestling 1st team, and earned All State Honorable Mention All Academic Team with a 3.83 GPA. She jumped right in, developed friendships quickly, and made herself right at home at Casteel. Jayleen is a very hard worker, extremely polite to all teachers and inclusive of all peers. She truly exemplifies the 3 Cs at Casteel. A model student, Ms. Bracamontes has added Honors and AP classes to her schedule to ensure that she is always challenged academically. She is a responsible, intelligent and personable young woman, and handles all situations with an air of grace and maturity. Casteel High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Tyler Christensen is one of only handful of students in the state who have been selected through audition as a four-year All-Stater for choir. He is the number one bass in the state this year. He plans to pursue music in college. Tyler is a hard worker and a gifted teacher. He currently student-teaches the junior high advanced choir, and they respond very well to his leadership, humor, and musical know-how. Tyler has held a leading role in every musical during his 4 years here. He is a gifted actor in our company theatre program and is also is a successful playwright. Tyler served as the Casteel marching band's drum major (conductor) during his sophomore year. He plays several instruments and is an all-around top-notch musician and performer. Casteel High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Nita Kulkarni is a 4.6 GPA student and is the founder and president of the CCHS Red Cross Club, the secretary of Drama Club, and Fashion/FIDM Club Vice President as well as a member of National Honor Society and the Casteel Theatre Company. Nita is active in her community and has volunteered at Perry Public Library as well as Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. She is actively involved in drama and musical productions as well as software development programs. As a member of our top acting group, Nita has acted in both mainstage productions this year -- most recently starring as Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. On top of being immensely talented, Nita is kind, welcoming, and makes every person in the troupe feel valued. Despite a life long medical condition, Lauren has always been determined to not allow her struggles to hold her back. Hamilton High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Zachary Killmer participated with the Hamilton High School jazz band on drum set, but outside of school this year, he has been a part of the Scottsdale Community College (SCC) big band as well as an SCC jazz combo, both on drums. Additionally, Zachary was one of three drummers nationwide selected to participate in Berkley's College of Music Master Summit where he got to play with Jeff Coffin from the Dave Matthews band and also work with drummer Chester Thompson. We did many different activities to involve them in the school and school spirit. Many events on campus have been positively impacted due to his attention to detail, organization, and reliability. Neil serves as the treasurer for Student Government, which is quite an undertaking. Hamilton High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: In her spare time, Bella Lines likes to delve into her creative side, journaling and writing letters. She especially likes to write letters to "someone who is having a hard time and needs some encouragement." Despite a heavy load of AP classes, Bella has participates in the Personal Progress and Honor Bee program through her church, focusing on faith, good works, and virtue. This program has taught her "how to set goals, evaluate growth, be involved in family and community, expand talents, and dedicate herself to values she is passionate about." Determined to strengthen herself through dancing, Bella achieved dancing en pointe after only six months of ballet. She also strengthened her leadership skills through Seminary Council and as President of the Laurel class in her church. Bella also acts as a dance mentor and mentors her two younger adopted sisters so that they can "strengthen their view of family. " In the fall Bella plans to attend BYU-Provo. Hamilton High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Evidence of Katherine Roshak's caring, empathetic nature can be found both inside and outside the classroom. Whether she is participating in a group discussion in class or organizing events for Girl Up, a club that helps raise money for women's shelters, Katherine always tries to serve as a role model for her peers. One of Katherine's most outstanding accomplishments has been her work with Students for Sustainable Schools. In addition to recycling paper and other materials at Hamilton, Katherine and her club are in the process of creating a composting program with bins for food waste for the cafeteria. She has also been a part of the Hamilton girls tennis team. Outside of school, Olivia volunteers as a teacher assistant at Hope Chinese School on Saturdays, and she enjoys art, photography and playing tennis. Hancock Elementary - (2018-2019) Our 6th grade students got a visit from Sun Lakes Rotarians to hear about the problems our neighbors on the Navajo Reservation have with access to clean water and about the global grant our school has been supporting to help bring the Navajo clean, running water. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Ty Siffermann is passionate about both football and baseball. He is going to Grand Canyon University to play baseball and plans to major in sports management. He has played baseball all his life and has many accomplishments on the field such as being named to the All State team as a sophomore. He also loved football and has played on Basha varsity team for three years now. Ty broke the catches record in Basha history and was also named two-way player of the year in its respected region. Not only has he dedicated himself to the sport programs at Basha, but also in the classroom being a true student athlete. Ty has a weighted GPA of 4.12 and unweighted GPA of a perfect 4.0! Hamilton High - (2018-2019) Hamilton Orchestra auditions were held for the 2019 Arizona All-State Orchestra. Hamilton orchestra students did well overall, with six accepted (Grace Zhang, Zocelyne Kow, Christine Lee, Brandon Tang, Ryan Widjaja and Colin Guan) and one first alternate. These exceptional musicians will participate in the upcoming festival at NAU, April 11-13. This achievement represents the highest honor an Arizona high school musician can earn.

Andersen Junior High - (2018-2019) Andersen Junior High ThinSat Rocket Launches into Space! Northrop Grumman (previously Orbital) launched the Antares rocket last week. Andersen Junior High was the only school in Arizona selected to participate in the ThinSat Program, guaranteeing them a spot on this rocket launch. The rocket will release the satellite to orbit Earth for five to ten days, collecting data on atmospheric pressure, temperature, velocity, altitude, and UV light. Students in Joe Badala's class launched prototypes on a helium balloon on campus to collect low atmospheric data. Gearing up for this rocket launch, students conducted a series of these launches, tethering some balloons and releasing others. They also sent a prototype on a weather balloon. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Alexander DePodesta played three years of varsity football and two years of varsity track. In addition he founded and became president of a political club on campus and joined the National Honor Society. Outside school, he volunteered hundreds of community service hours to Chandler Police Cadets. Academically, he scored a 32 on the ACT and maintained a 4.67 weighted grade point average. He feels most fortunate to have received a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship and Presidential scholarship to ASU. Alexander plans on serving in the Navy after college and pursuing a career in Naval Aviation. While being raised by a single father who works as a police sergeant, he feels he could not have achieved half of these goals without the tremendous support of the patient and talented teachers, trainers, coaches, and other faculty on campus. Chandler Early College - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Theodore "Teddy" Ruth has been a Chandler Early College student for the majority of his high school career. Teddy carries with him a solid 3.3 GPA and has been an active member of Student Council for the last two years. He is a past recipient of the CEC Character Award for Trustworthiness. He has been a student at EVIT for the last two years, studying Information Technology and Engineering Careers (iTEC). Recently, Teddy competed in the Interactive Media and Game Design Competition at the SkillsUSA Arizona Championships. He and his partner took first place in the state. In June, both will compete at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference competition in Kentucky. Chandler High - (2018-2019) Anna Iverson has been named a 2019 Flinn Scholar! The Flinn Scholarship is a highly competitive, merit-based scholarship with a value that exceeds $120,000. Flinn Scholars thrive in the classroom and maintain purposeful involvement in extracurricular activities. They assume leadership roles at their high schools and in their communities. Chandler High - (2018-2019) Cienna Samiley, CHS Junior, competed at the USA Gymnastics Region 1 Championships last weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. She competed against the top Junior Olympic level 10 gymnasts from California, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada in her age group. Cienna won the All-Around bronze medal after competing in all four events: Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, and Floor Exercise. Cienna's third place finish earned her a spot to compete at Junior Olympic nationals to be held next month in Indianapolis. The best level 10 gymnasts from across the country qualify to nationals. She currently is a starting player on both a club team and the Hamilton varsity volleyball team. In addition to athletics, Fiona is also an outstanding scholar. She has taken many AP classes, including Biology, AP Language Arts and Composition, AP Calculus, AP Statistics and AP Mandarin. Tarwater Elementary - (2018-2019) Tarwater Elementary held its annual Art Masterpiece night on April 9. Families enjoyed viewing a variety of works by student artists and students collaborated on the beautiful cherry blossom tree on the outside stage.
Basha High - (2018-2019) Basha students traveled to the FCCLA State Competition in Tucson with 1,200 students from around the state. Every student placed either first or second in the state in their event category, earning a total of 11 GOLD medals and 1 SILVER medal! We will represent CUSD and AZFCCLA in Anaheim, CA at the FCCLA National Competition this summer. Basha High - (2018-2019) Our Basha High FCCLA chapter received the GOLD Chapter Achievement Award and the BRONZE Chapter Service Project at the FCCLA State Competition in Tucson in April. Congratulations also to Kristina DeSantiago who was elected to the FCCLA State Executive Council as Vice President of Service Learning! She is the first from CUSD to be elected to the FCCLA Executive Council.
