• COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    Prerequisite: Early Childhood Education II

    This course will focus on the application of skills attained in Early Childhood Education I & II through the onsite childcare center and/or early childhood classrooms in CUSD. Students will be working towards industry certification: The Child Development Associate Credential (CDA). Students will develop lesson plans, classroom management techniques, and a professional work portfolio. Industry certification may be offered in this course. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a CTSO (Career and Technical Student Organization) Family, Career, & Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).

    CAREER AND TECHNICAL STUDENT ORGANIZATION (CTSO):

    Students are required to participate in CTSO activities, but not affiliate; however, students must affiliate in order to participatespring 2011 competition in state competitions. The CTSO organization for this class is FCCLA (Family, Careers, and Community Leaders of America). Involvement in FCCLA offers members the opportunity to expand their leadership potential and develop skills for life -- planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision-making, and interpersonal communication -- necessary in for college and the workplace.     FCCLA LEADERSHIP GRADE:

    FCCLA Leadership Grade: A major aspect to this course is the development of leadership skills, speaking abilities, teamwork and other various skills that will play a major role in every individual’s career choice. Students are required to participate in the local FCCLA activities and have the opportunity to participate in the district, state and national FCCLA activities. This will count for 10% of each semester’s grade. Please refer to the leadership grade sheet for dates of the required events.

    CDA-THE CHILD DEVELOPMENT CREDENTIAL:

    Students participating in Early Childhood Education -CDA begin to prepare for the CDA by earning internship hours (480 hours are required for CDA) and completing a Professional Resource File. The Child Devcda council for professional recognitionelopment Associate® (CDA) is the most widely recognized credential in early childhood education (ECE) and is a key stepping stone on the path of career advancement in ECE. The CDA credential is based on a core set of competency standards, which guide early care professionals as they work toward becoming qualified teachers of young children. The Council works to ensure that the nationally-transferable CDA is a credible and valid credential, recognized by the profession as a vital part of professional development. CDAs have knowledge of how to put the CDA Competency Standards into practice and understanding of why those standards help children move with success from one developmental stage to another. Put simply, CDAs know how to nurture the emotional, physical, intellectual, and social development of children.     INTERNSHIP LEARNING EXPERIENCES:

    Besides the on-campus childcare center experiences, students will also be participating in other work experiences off-campus, such as, but not limited to, storytelling in the public libraries, community service projects, and art masterpiece with the local elementary schools in early elementary classrooms.
