Basha High - (2019-2020) Basha student Winter Ashley of the Basha High Y.E.S. Basha High - (2019-2020) Basha High symphonic orchestra, under the direction of Jonathan Gott, won "Superior with Distinction" at the ABODA (Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association) Fall Festival at Corona del Sol High School prior to fall break.
Basha High - (2019-2020) Keith Tomaszewicz's engineering classes took a field trip in September to Grand Canyon University to participate in Engineering GCU DAY. Students were exposed to different engineering programs and career options, and got to do a hands-on workshop with breadboards and electronic circuits to operate autonomous robots and a laser beam. Additionally, they went on a tour of the engineering labs and reviewed the engineering curriculum that GCU offers. Actual GCU engineering students also took Mr. Tomaszewicz's 2nd and 3rd year students around the campus to show them what campus life is like. GCU Engineering Day Photo Album
Basha High - (2019-2020) Basha High School Social Studies teacher Elizabeth Schley is a part of a podcast for teacher tips. She is also an an author for Stories From Schools AZ where she shares daily life in an Arizona classroom for the Northern Arizona University AZ K12 Center where she is on the Teacher Advisory Board. Basha High - (2018-2019) Congratulations to Basha High Early Childhood seniors who applied and tested for the National Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential. All nine passed the exam and verification observation/interview, earning their credential! Additionally, they collectively were awarded almost $4,000 in scholarships to cover the entire cost of the certification.
Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Matthew Tucker will graduate from Basha High with perfect attendance (no instances of absence or tardies) over the course of his entire 13 year academic career, remaining diligent and focused on attending and participating in school every day. He ranks 20th in his graduating class and earned a 4.675 GPA. Matthew was awarded the AP + PLTW (Project Lead The Way) Achievement for earning qualifying scores on a combination of three Advanced Placement Exams and Project Lead the Way end-of-course assessments in the Engineering Pathway. He also earned a Career and Technical Education (CTE) certificate in Engineering Sciences, taking four AP courses and the five associated AP tests for those classes. A recipient of the Presidential Scholarship at ASU, Matthew has been accepted into Barrett, the Honors College in pursuit of a Robotics Engineering degree. Basha High Seniors Highlights
Basha High - (2018-2019) Congratulations to Camden Mateen, the Division I State Champion in Mens Varsity Long Jump.
Basha High - (2018-2019) Basha High choirs, Noteworthy, Counterpoint and High Impact, earned three Superior ratings in National Music in the Parks competition at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. In addition, High Impact, Basha High School's Show Choir, won the Overall Choir award, with the highest score in the competition. Robyn Amans directs the Basha High choirs.
Basha High - (2018-2019) Basha High boys and girls tennis teams took home four first place finishes and two second place finishes at the 2019 Chandler Prep Kiwanis Invitational! For context, 16 teams from across Arizona competed in five competition divisions: three singles and two doubles, in boys and girls tennis. They medaled in six of those ten divisions, and the girls medaled in four of the five divisions.

Basha High - (2018-2019) Congratulations to our HOSA (Future Health Professionals, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America) Chapters for Medical Professions and Biotechnology! Thirteen Basha High students competed in Tucson, and they all worked hard for this event. Our winners were:

Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Egesi Iheduru has come a long way throughout her four years of high school. Participating in cheer, theatre, and choir, Egesi strives to find multiple chances to make school more enjoyable. With her 4.3 GPA, Egesi always leaves time for her studies which is evident in her being named an AP Scholar with Honor. She has also ventured off campus to find opportunities to express her passions. In the past year, she has earned an Overall Superior ranking in a Solo Musical performance at the Central Arizona Thespian Festival, was a finalist in the U.S. Senate Youth Program, and acted as a Councilwoman in the Town of Gilbert's Mayor's Youth Advisory Committee's Student Government Day. In pursuit of her life goals, Egesi plans to attend a four-year university in either LA or New York -- she is still torn choosing between schools. Basha High Seniors Highlights
Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Ty Siffermann is passionate about both football and baseball. He is going to Grand Canyon University to play baseball and plans to major in sports management. He has played baseball all his life and has many accomplishments on the field such as being named to the All State team as a sophomore. He also loved football and has played on Basha varsity team for three years now. Ty broke the catches record in Basha history and was also named two-way player of the year in its respected region. Not only has he dedicated himself to the sport programs at Basha, but also in the classroom being a true student athlete. Ty has a weighted GPA of 4.12 and unweighted GPA of a perfect 4.0! He pushes himself to being a good student athlete, but most important, an even better person. Basha High Seniors Highlights
Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Breyanna Mix has a 4.0 GPA, is the president of the NAC (Native American Club), and is graduating at the age of 16. She shows academic excellence and is respected by her community. She plans to attend Chandler Gilbert Community College before transferring to Arizona State University. Basha High Seniors Highlights
Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Alexander DePodesta played three years of varsity football and two years of varsity track. In addition he founded and became president of a political club on campus and joined the National Honor Society. Outside school, he volunteered hundreds of community service hours to Chandler Police Cadets. Academically, he scored a 32 on the ACT and maintained a 4.67 weighted grade point average. He feels most fortunate to have received a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship and Presidential scholarship to ASU. Alexander plans on serving in the Navy after college and pursuing a career in Naval Aviation. While being raised by a single father who works as a police sergeant, he feels he could not have achieved half of these goals without the tremendous support of the patient and talented teachers, trainers, coaches, and other faculty on campus. Basha High - (2018-2019) Basha students traveled to the FCCLA State Competition in Tucson with 1,200 students from around the state. Every student placed either first or second in the state in their event category, earning a total of 11 GOLD medals and 1 SILVER medal! We will represent CUSD and AZFCCLA in Anaheim, CA at the FCCLA National Competition this summer. Basha High - (2018-2019) Our Basha High FCCLA chapter received the GOLD Chapter Achievement Award and the BRONZE Chapter Service Project at the FCCLA State Competition in Tucson in April. Congratulations also to Kristina DeSantiago who was elected to the FCCLA State Executive Council as Vice President of Service Learning! She is the first from CUSD to be elected to the FCCLA Executive Council.
Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Constantine "Gus" Pyle is a very hard-working and dedicated student. He has a GPA of 4.2 and has maintained a 4.0 or above throughout his time at Basha. He has been involved in National Honor Society for the last two years and has received the Outstanding Academic Accomplishment Award all four years. Gus played football at Basha for two years. Unfortunately, he sustained a serious back injury that withheld him from the field his junior and senior years, so he decided to stay involved with the program as a student volunteer coach. He enjoyed being a role model to the younger student athletes on the Freshman team and loved the opportunity he was given. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Katie Pascavis is a 2019 Flinn Scholar who is passionate about serving others. She teaches younger students and leads community service efforts as President of Queen Creek 4-H Dog and STEM projects, President of County 4-H Dog Committee, and Vice President of National Honors Society. She works to spread her passion for STEM to the next generation as a Basha Chief Science Officer and member of the Science is Fun and Girl STEMpowerment programs. She has also represented Arizona as a National 4-H Conference attendee, a National 4-H Congress Youth Leadership Member, and a public speaker at Western National Roundup. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Brielle Raymond is a hardworking and passionate student who has been an active leader in the choir program at Basha High School for the past four years. Brielle has been in six different choirs, including Noteworthy, Basha's highest choir, for the past two years. Her senior year, Brielle has become Choir President and accomplished many things, such as leading three choir concerts when her teacher was unable to be there. She also is proud of her senior project where she put on a show at Sozo Coffeehouse to raise money for music resources. Brielle plans to pursue her music career at CGCC and ASU, where she wants to study music education and become a choir director. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Timothy "Timmy" Petersen helps his mother and grandmother with their catering business, Joanne's Catering, by preparing meals, serving at events, and delivering weekly meals. Through this experience, he has learned the importance of communication as well as being professional and organized. While at BHS, he participated in two musicals, Legally Blonde and Grease, was involved in GSA and won an FFA (Future Farmers of America) Food and Service award. In college, he plans to study astronomy and physics and is looking forward to possible studying abroad. Basha High Seniors Highlights
Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Aarjav Pandya is currently a senior at Basha High School. He is a National Merit Scholar, a National AP Scholar, and a Chandler IMPACT Scholar. He serves as the President of Basha's National Honor Society and Vice President of LEO Club. He has spent the last three summers volunteering through the Dignity Health Volunteer Program, where his experiences with patients and professionals alike inspired him to pursue a career in surgery. He will be studying Biology and Global Health at Emory University this fall and will attend medical school afterwards. Basha High Seniors Highlights
Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Marcos Luzardo is a motivated and dynamic young man who works with young children after school with Bounce Boot Camp to promote exercise and healthy lifestyles. He enjoys working with young kids because he gets to watch them grow and learn while developing their personalities. Marcos plans on attending Chandler-Gilbert Community College and is leaning toward a degree in business. During his time as a Basha Bear, he has been involved in DECA (formerly Distributive Education Clubs of America), and his favorite class was marketing class with Mrs. Lavoy. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Throughout high school, Sydney Stolze has maintained a 3.7 GPA and played school softball all four years at Basha, as well as club softball since she was 10. Sydney has been in Student Government her junior and senior year, where she learned exceptional leadership skills. When things got tough, Sydney never quit... which has made her a well-rounded Basha student athlete. Sydney's freshman year, she made JV softball and was sad because all her friends made Varsity that year, but she refused to give up. In fact, it made her work harder. Sydney switched over from hitting righty to slapping on the left side to use the speed she had. Since then, Sydney has acquired so much confidence hitting left handed. Last season, Sydney made 1st Team All CUSD, 1st Team All-Region, and has signed to continue playing softball at Mesa Community College next season on a Presidential Scholarship. She will be majoring in Interior Design Applied Sciences in hopes of becoming a successful interior designer. Basha High Seniors Highlights
Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Stefani Montreuil is a senior at Basha High School this year. She is involved in National Honors Society, Show Choir, HOSA (formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America), BSU (Black Student Union), and The Unified Club. This upcoming fall she plans to attend Arizona State University majoring in Biomedical Sciences. She enjoys making music, dancing, watching movies and Chick-fil-a. Basha High Seniors Highlights
Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Nick MacGregor is currently studying Jazz Performance with an emphasis in percussion at Arizona State University in Tempe. He also marches at the Academy Drum and Bugle Corps in the 2019 world class DCI (Drum Corps International) circuit. Nick spends time producing, making music, performing, and teaching lessons as an independent private lessons instructor and is also a multi-instrumentalist. He has a 3.8 GPA and takes half of his classes at school so he can perform and master his craft. Basha High Seniors Highlights
Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Marissa Edwards moved from Pittsburgh to Arizona the beginning of her sophomore year. She immediately became involved at Basha High School. She holds various leadership positions, such as: president of the Asian Cultural Ethics Club (ACE) during her junior and senior year, music mentor for the Accelerated Middle School for two years, and drum major of the marching band. She is also active in the National Honor Society, Basha Flute Choir, Basha Indoor Percussion Ensemble, teaching flute lessons, choreographing dances for ACE club, while balancing a full schedule of AP Classes. After graduation, Marissa will be attending Arizona State University to study Mechanical Engineering. Basha High Seniors Highlights
Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Dannielle Tumpap is currently on her sixth year at Basha High -- not as a super, super senior but as a former Basha Accelerated Middle School student. Dannielle has been involved in a variety of different clubs and programs. She participated in orchestra since starting her journey as a Basha Bear, constantly repping her fellow violists, which she likes to refer to as the "underdogs of the ensemble." Her time has also been spent leading clubs like ITS (International Thespian Society), Tri-M, Orchestra Council, and H4H as well as being a part of Link Crew and National Honor Society while managing to stay in the top of her class. Dannielle's favorite moments have included performing in several shows, like Lady Dracula and Les Miserables, joining the improv team (Sudden Impact Comedy Improv), and singing for the ACE showcase every year. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: To say that Brianna Persiani has been busy during her high school career would be a gross understatement. Throughout the last four years, Brianna has been part of many clubs. She has served as Captain of the Girls Golf Team, Vice President of Academic Decathlon, Secretary of DECA and Secretary of International Thespians Society -- all while maintaining a 4.45 GPA. Additionally, she has been a member of National Honors Society and the National Society of High School Scholars. During her free time, she loves giving back to her community by volunteering at the Grove Church, Girl Scouts of America and other organizations. Besides being involved with many clubs, Brianna went a step further and created her own club, called Oldies But Goodies, that goes around to nursing homes and assisted living facilities and performs for residents. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Anna LeRoy is a level 10 gymnast at Desert Lights Gymnastics. She trains 20 hours per week while maintaining a 4.2 GPA. She received scholarship offers from multiple Division I college gymnastics teams. As a sophomore in high school, Anna committed to Sacramento State University on a full athletic scholarship, and she will be competing on their Division I gymnastics team in the spring of 2020. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Kana Li is a senior at Basha High School. She has maintained a 4.33 cumulative GPA throughout her academic career. Kana is a member of National Honor Society, National Honor Society for Dance Arts, and is the President of Kismet Dance Company at Basha High. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Ariah Montoya is a three year member of Student Government and the Senior Class President of Basha High School. She is involved in National Honors Society and Si Se Puede as well as the manager of the Varsity Wrestling team and the Kismet Dance Company. When she isn't at school, she is either working at La Casa Blanca as a server or painting hydro flasks. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Alexandra Kaakoush is a top student in her class, with a 4.7 weighted GPA. In her time as a Basha Bear, she has received the AP Scholar Award with Distinction and earned a Seal of Biliteracy on her diploma. She is an officer in the National Spanish Honors Society (Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica), Si Se Puede, Oldies but Goodies, and Sustainability clubs at Basha and is an active member of the International Thespian Society and National Honor Society. Alexandra received a full-tuition scholarship from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. She will be attending BYU-Provo this fall as an International Relations major. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Ethan Pelland is passionate about academics and civic engagement. He has a 4.62 cumulative GPA. Ethan is a National Merit Commended Scholar, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and a member of National Honor Society. He proudly represented Basha High at American Legion Boys State. Ethan focused on voter registration for his Basha Gives Back senior project and has registered over 150 students this school year. He will be attending Arizona State University Barrett Honors College majoring in Computer Information Systems and Global Politics and plans to attend graduate school to study International Relations. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Jonathon Durand is a student athlete who has lettered in football, basketball, and track and field at Basha High School, while maintaining a 4.62 GPA. He is a member of National Honors Society and contributes many hours a week to volunteering, coaching youth football. Jonathon was offered multiple opportunities to compete in Division I football while attending top of the line colleges, including Stanford, Princeton, Yale, Army, and University of San Diego. Next year, he will be starting his first year at Yale University, the school he chose that will best provide an opportunity to be a high level collegiate athlete, while also receiving a distinguished degree. Basha High - (2018-2019) In March 2019, 38 middle and high school teams from across the nation were selected as winners of the seventh annual Lead2Feed Challenge earning grants for their team's nonprofit of choice. Through the Lead2Feed Student Leadership Program, students develop 21st century leadership skills and project based learning standards. Basha High Early Childhood Education students developed and implemented a service learning project to bring art lessons to over 400 students at Bologna Elementary every quarter during the 2018-2019 school year. The Lead2Feed Student Leadership Program awarded a $500 charitable grant based on the outstanding work of the Basha High students. Last week Basha High teacher Mrs. Alexander and her students presented the check to the principal, Dr. Padilla, and students at Bologna Elementary.
Basha High - (2018-2019) Congratulations to Basha High winterguard groups Indoor Percussion Ensemble and Winter Winds who won state championships on March 29-30 at Arizona State University.
Basha High - (2018-2019) Basha High marketing students got a lesson from Intel employees on Supply Chain Management. The students participated in a hands-on activity in which they simulated how engineers and logistics specialists work together in teams to determine the skills necessary to run a successful supply chain.
Basha High - (2018-2019) Thomas McGowan and Colin Tucker won 3rd Place in Senior Division: Energy: Physical (EGPH) for the project titled Can the Use of the Organic Gel Mucilage, Extracted from Chia Seeds, Improve the Efficiency and Heat Retention of Solar Ponds? at the 2019 Arizona Science and Engineering Fair. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Tera Smeltzer senior at Basha High School. Tera is this year's number one girls discus thrower on the team, holding the second highest school record. Taking five AP classes, including AP Research (which is a requirement in the AP Capstone program), she will be receiving a second diploma for Capstone. In addition to athletics and academics, Tera is AFJROTC commander this year. She is hoping to obtain an appointment to the Air Force Academy, but if not, will attend the Flight Academy at University of North Dakota on Air Force scholarship, and then to on to attend Northern Arizona University with Lumberjack and ROTC scholarships. Basha High - (2018-2019) SENIOR HIGHLIGHT: Ethan LaBelle is an outstanding Musician. During the school year, Ethan plays trombone, baritone and saxophone. For summers, he has opportunities to travel playing euphonium. During the summer of 2018 he traveled with Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps. In the summer of 2019, he will travel with Arizona Academy Drum and Bugle Corps. In addition to talent within music, Ethan is an outstanding scholar. Basha was named an Arizona Civic Engagement School of Excellence by the Arizona Department of Education at an awards ceremony in March. Basha High - (2018-2019) Congratulations to Basha teacher Keith Tomaszewicz who was recognized by the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) with the Aspirations in Computing Educator Award at a ceremony at ASU in March. The Aspirations in Computing Educator Award identifies outstanding educators who play a pivotal role in encouraging young women to explore their interest in computing and technology, and recognizes these educators for their efforts to promote gender equity in computing. Over the past four years, more than 160 educators have been recognized and have received more than $150,000 in professional development funding to improve their computing education skills. Basha High - (2018-2019) Congratulations to Basha High, honored as a Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Distinguished School, the only high school in Arizona to receive this award for the second year in a row. Basha High was recognized for providing broad access to transformative learning opportunities for students through its PLTW programs.
