    SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Jasmeen Sidhu plans to attend Arizona State University to major in Biological Sciences in the fall. She is a National Merit Finalist and has been awarded the Sun Devil State Award. She plans on going to medical school post undergrad with a desire to become a dermatologist.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Stephanie Robinson plans to attend Baylor University as an Invitation to Excellence Scholar majoring in Nutrition Sciences. She has a strong interest in nutrition with a goal of becoming a registered dietician. She received the Principal's 4.0 award for four consecutive years. As part of the Basha High School Girls Varsity Tennis team, she was named Most Valuable Player (2019) and captain (junior year), and volunteered to help coach the freshman team. Stephanie's extracurricular activities include National Honors Society, Link Crew, Young Conservative Student Union, Concert Band, and Student Government where she served as freshman class president and as sophomore class publicity manager. She logged over 100 hours of community service volunteering with Feed My Starving Children, local elementary schools (setting up and managing carnivals, art programs and dances), the Basha Public Library Summer Reading program, and meal preparation as a volunteer cook at Avana Assisted Living.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Madelynn Mortenson has taken many AP, Honors, and Dual Enrollment courses has a 4.28-weighted GPA. She received the Student of the Quarter award in her Biology class her sophomore year and the 4.0 award from 2017-2020. Madelynn has been actively involved in community service, completing 45 hours of volunteer work through the National Honor Society. Throughout the winter of 2019, she served a total of twenty hours volunteering at Feed My Starving Children. Madelynn's long-term goal is to be a psychiatrist.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Olivia Breen has served in many capacities: Girl STEMpowerment (Director of Physics), Science is Fun (Senior Representative), NHS, Symphonic Orchestra (holding positions as Concertmaster, Section Leader, Council Treasurer, and Council VPGirl). She has been honored as part of the Southwest Regional Orchestra, Arizona All-state Orchestra, and was among a select group of students who made All Regional and All State all four years of high school. Olivia is also co-founder and 1st violinist of Willow String Quartet and Social Media Chair/Winter Summit Chair for the Gilbert Town Fiddlers. This summer, she has been selected to attend and perform at Madeline Island Chamber Music Festival and Hilton Head Chamber Music Institute.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Winter Ashley was an active member in ITS (International Thespian Society), SIC (Sudden Impact Comedy), National Honor Society, Academic Decathlon, GSA, and was instrumental in launching CUSD's Diversity and Equity program. Winter was involved with the Arizona Coalition Girl Up and Teen Advisor to Girl Up Headquarters in Washington, D.C. She has been highlighted in the Smithsonian Institute for her part in women's activism, and presented at the United Nations Global Engagement Summit panel. Winter was named a Questbridge National Search Scholar and will be attending Washington and Lee University with a full 4-year scholarship. She intends to study neuroscience and law.     Jake Summers
    SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  A vital part of the Basha Academic Decathlon team, Jake Summers’ stellar finish at the state competition placed him 2nd overall among all competitors, with a 1st place medal in science (perfect score), a 1st place medal in music (perfect score), and medals in four other disciplines. The team closed the season with a 3rd place team finish at State, Basha’s highest ranking in school history. He recently learned that he is going to compete at the Academic Decathlon national level competition. This year, the Science is Fun club earned the Most Engaging Presentation at the Arizona SciTech Festival with his Honors Science Research contributions. A National Merit Finalist scholarship winner, AP Scholar and recipient of two Academic Decathlon scholarships, Jake will graduate with an AP Capstone Diploma from Basha. Olivia competed on both the spirit line and dance team at Basha High and was a state level award winner at HOSA competitions. She is fluent in three languages - English, Polish, and Spanish.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Cayden Musgrove has a weighted GPA of 4.3 and has been a National Honor Society member of two years. He has taken multiple engineering classes which all dealt with things such as coding, bread-boarding, and graphic design, in addition to multiple Advanced Placement and honors classes. Cayden is also very involved in extracurricular activities at school and outside of school. He is a peer facilitator and helps special needs students with PE skills, life skills, and social skills. He has attended Feed My Starting Children on multiple occasions to prepare food for the less fortunate. He has volunteered at the Salvation Army during Christmas. Cayden is able to succeed equally in academics and athletics. Cayden has committed to the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in Texas where he received the Presidential Scholarship.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Francisco Mendoza has been in Newspaper club, National Honor Society, and on the boys' varsity golf team sophomore through senior year. He is president of the golf club this year. Francisco was a Graphic Design Skills USA team member for 3 years, has been involved in the ACE (Achieving a College Education) program at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC), and will obtain up to 24 credits with a 4.0 at CGCC, with sixty college credits by the time he graduates high school. His GPA is 4.46, receiving the 4.0 GPA award each year of high school. Francisco volunteered to feed the homeless, for Relay for Life, and Smiles for Christmas. He is biliterate in Spanish and English. He received a suit from East Valley Women's League, using it for internships. He won 2nd place in the Basha Science Fair his sophomore year in Energy.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Sreyha Nandakumar was one of 5 students to receive the Stamps full-ride scholarship to UofA. She plans to study molecular and cellular biology and public health on a pre-med track to become a neurologist. Sreyha was in National Honor Society and secretary for Si Se Puede her junior year, and in Spanish National Honor Society from freshman to junior years. She took 15 AP classes, has a 4.81 GPA, and received a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sreyha has been on the Mayor's Youth Commission for 5 years, organizing and leading community events for teens such as mental health virtual presentations on depression and anxiety with Not My Kid. She was on the Chandler youth budgeting panel to allocate funds for different non-profits that serve Chandler youth. She did Parkinson's research with a professor at ASU and placed third at HISEF in Molecular and Cellular Biology.     Basha High FCCLA
    Congratulations to Basha High FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) chapter and their service project "Socktober" for being named a second-place winner in the February 2021 Lead4change Challenge! The Lead4Change Student Leadership Program teaches students leadership lessons which include skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication and collaboration. Students work to develop a service project that addresses a need in their community using these skills. For their project, they collected and donated over 400 pairs of socks for the homeless. Because of their win, a $500 grant will be awarded to their non-profit partner, H.E.L.P. (Homeless Engagement Lift Partnership) so they can continue to help homeless families in our community.

    Basha High Junior ROTC Cadets
    Basha High School Junior ROTC cadets, under the direction of Master Sargent Keith Johnson and Clifford Stansell, held a short fundraiser the week before break to get some Christmas gifts for some local foster children. The cadets signed up to provide presents for two 13-year-old foster kids (a boy and a girl) and then started collecting donations. In eight short days, the cadets raised $1,800! They spent $670 buying gifts for the two kids and then donated the remaining $1,130 to the charity Branching Out Family Services to help with gifts for more children.

    Google Meets Lesson
    Basha High School Academic Decathlon and World History teacher Charles Johnson incorporates guest speakers in his Google Meets lesson. He recently welcomed Ethan Wuthrich in his zero hour Hour Academic Decathlon class. Ethan is a Basha Academic Decathlon Alumni who is a published astronomer, and he taught students about the Science Portion of Academic Decathlon this year, which is focused on Astronomy. For his World History students, he arranged a virtual guest speaker presentation by the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Arizona. The presentation, titled the "Abrahamic Panel," consisted of guest speakers representing Islam, Judaism, and Christianity each sharing the histories, core beliefs, and commonalities among the three monotheistic traditions, and taking part in a question and answer session with the students.

    Distinguished Unit with Merit
    The Basha High AFJROTC unit has been recognized with the Distinguished Unit with Merit Award for academic year 2019-2020! From the HQ AFJROTC announcement letter: "The Distinguished Unit with Merit Award recognizes the personal growth and accomplishments of the cadets, the contributions of the instructors as mentors of the cadets, and the support of the school and community. The Distinguished Unit with Merit Award is limited to the very best of the best of our nation's 890 Air Force JROTC unit." This recognition is based on some key metrics such as how well they performed during their inspection and the incredible job the cadets did on community service (over 3,000 hrs in only 3 quarters -- a record for their program).

    On her second throw, Basha High 9th Grader Gabriella Garcia launched a 128' absolute bomb, which instantly made her the #1 ranked javelin thrower in the country at her age.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Lewis Alexander has been a part of the Basha community for seven years, as he is also a former Basha AMS (Accelerated Middle School student). Lewis has taken multiple AP courses and maintained a 4.6 GPA, but is best known as "Mr. Lewis" in his role in our early childhood education program, where he was hired this year as an after school care worker. He is a National AP Scholar, and is receiving a national certification, the Child Development Associate credential. He was a member of the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and won gold medals at state and national competitions for his contribution to our community service project, Petite Picassos. Lewis plays the guitar and drums and is a member of the National Honor Society, Chinese National Honor Society and Science is Fun.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Emily "Em" Uranga is a four-year member of the Basha theatre department and represented Basha in numerous events and categories during this time (receiving many Superiors); including showcasing in Stage Management at the Arizona State Thespian Festival while only a sophomore. She participated in every main stage performance offered, was an officer of ITS (International Thespian Society) for the past two years, and mentored younger students in technical theatre consistently. Em is accomplished academically, involved in other activities on campus, and is president of the Girl Talk club in addition to her theatre responsibilities. When the teacher was injured last year, Em stepped up and directed the spring main stage show without the benefit of a trained adult in theatre present to help her.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  While taking art classes at Basha High, Olivia Morey has grown into a self-assured artist with a vision.     Randall Powers
    SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Randall Powers has attended Basha High since 6th grade as part of the Accelerated Middle School, and was an AP Capstone student and National AP Scholar. Randall was a member of National Honor Society, lettered academically, and graduated summa cum laude. He also played on the Basha hockey team for four years and was a co-founder of the Basha ESports club and team, spending much of the past two years looking at how the video game community benefits a person emotionally and socially. Randall is full of personality and could often be seen in a fun, button-down print shirt playing Toto's Africa. Randall will be attending the Ira A.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Robert Royce has been an active member and President of the Basha DECA (formerly Distributive Education Clubs of America) chapter for the past four years. His hard work and dedication have hmelped him achieve numerous medals at the DECA district and state competition levels and propelled him to the International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, Georgia where he had the honor meeting Carl Azuz of CNN. Robbie also took on the role of Manager of the "Grizzly Shack" and is the co-founder of the Creative Music Club on campus.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Taya Browning has been a member of Basha's dance team as well as the varsity pomline which she loved. She is actively involved in community service, is a very inclusive person and sincerely wants to help others succeed.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Hayden Mitteer has proven to be an excellent leader and role model for underclassmen. Additionally, his participation in Science is Fun has helped to educate and entertain elementary students throughout the district.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Tess Ward is a second year AP Studio Art student, an incredibly skilled artist who is constantly pushing towards new levels of mastery. She has won awards for painting and drawing at the regional and state levels. Tess always brings a part of who they are into their work and doesn't shy away from their individuality. As a student, Tess is wonderful to have and always contributes in a positive way. She was a member of National Honor Society and French Honor Society.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Kaden Lowry has had great academic success throughout high school, maintaining a 4.1 GPA, and has been part of National Honor Society since his junior year. He was also active with sports, lettering in boys golf his freshman and sophomore years.
