Basha High - (2015-2016) The Basha High DECA program along with teacher Scott Martin, traveled to the East Valley Institute of Technology on Tuesday, January 12 for their Desert Region Competition. They competed at a very high level and represented the Chandler Unified School District with great pride and professionalism. Basha High - (2015-2016) For the second year in a row, Basha High's Air Force JROTC program, consisting of cadets from both Basha and Perry High School, has raised $900 for Honor Flight Arizona. From October to December these cadets saved their nickels, dimes and quarters to meet their goal of $900, enough to pay for a Chandler-area WWII veteran to travel to Washington, D.C.. The goal of the Honor Flight program is to pay homage to our WWII heroes by supporting them on their 3-day journey of honor and remembrance. Basha High - (2015-2016) Noteworthy and Counterpoint Choirs, under the direction of Robyn Bydalek, competed in the Arizona Choral Educators Fall Festival in Mesa and received and Excellent with Distinction rating, and a Superior with Distinction Rating. Basha High - (2014-2015) Zach Werlinger, 2014 Basha High graduate, has been named one of five National Scholar Athlete award winners by the National Football Foundation. He was named Scholar Athlete of the Year by the Valley of the Sun chapter last spring and was selected as one of 36 national finalists. Representing the West region, Zach will fly to New York City in December for the National Football Foundation awards luncheon. Basha High - (2014-2015) Basha High Principal Ken James was awarded the Administrator of the Year for the Central Region by the Arizona Thespian State Board for his support of the arts. Basha High - (2014-2015) BHS student, Dustyn Phillips, wanted to positively affect children in Brazil while visiting there. With the help of Faith Celebration Ministries he and his fellow Basha Kids Helping Kids friend Logan, took over 200 youth soccer uniforms and donated them to a non-profit neighborhood youth literacy program. The founder explained that they use soccer (futbol) as a way to encourage youth to participate in the reading program. They are not funded by the government, but rather donors and volunteers. Arizona State Science and Engineering FairBasha High - (2013-2014) Arizona State Science and Engineering Fair (AzSEF) Winners: Steven Baron, Brian Sefcik and Derek Stencil of Basha High and Rahul Ramesh of Hamilton High received special awards at the Arizona State Science and Engineering Fair, the ASU Innovation Award of the Office of the Vice President for Entrepreneurship & Innovation. Arizona State Science and Engineering FairBasha High - (2013-2014) Zach Werlinger was recognized by the National Football Foundation as their Scholar Athlete of the Year. This Chapter represents over 238,000 students from 182 High schools in Central and Northern Arizona. Zach set school records for season passing TD's and passing yards and was named Offensive Player of the Year' for CUSD. He is President of NHS and has a weighted GPA of 4.5. In June, Zach will be the Chapter's candidate for the 2014 NFF National High School Scholar Athlete Awards. East Valley TribuneBasha High - (2013-2014) Basha hosted a holiday extravaganza in conjunction with Smiles of Christmas to provide 160 first and second grade students from San Marcos Elementary with Christmas memories to last a lifetime. Assistant Principal Michelle Good worked tirelessly with the NHS and many other organizations on campus to make it a huge success. Each elementary student spent the day playing games and visiting Santa with their own Basha student/mentor. Basha High - (2013-2014) Basha High's International Thespian Society opened its doors in November to the deaf community with a special production of Aida written by Elton John and Tim Rice. This is the first time a main stage high school production has been fully interpreted in the district. Eight American Sign Language students from BHS and two professional signers will interpret the entire production for the last show. The group plans another deaf culture event in the spring with a production of Pride & Prejudice. Basha High - (2013-2014) For the 5th straight year, the Bear Regiment earned a rating of Superior at State Festival in November 2013. Schools are ranked through an index formula that's a simple ratio: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year. A ratio of 1.000 would mean the school had as many tests as graduates. The Washington PostBasha High - (2013-2014) At the 2013 Governor's Celebration of Innovation (GCOI) sponsored by the Arizona Technology Council, Basha High School' s Dr. Michael Mckelvy was named the 2013 Teacher of the Year. The GCOI is Arizona's largest annual awards gala that honors Arizona's technology leaders and innovators. Eligible recipients are secondary educators in the field of science, technology, engineering or math (STEM). Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University STEM AcademyBasha High - (2013-2014) Basha High was the only school representing Arizona at the Mu Alpha Theta National Math Convention in July, a competition for high schools and 2-year colleges with roughly 650 students attending from all around the U.S. David Li, BHS senior, placed 8th in Sequences and Series, 5th in Mu Calculus, and 1st in Computer Science. Tyler Pinho, BHS class of 2013 and now a freshman at ASU, placed 10th overall in the Chalk Talk, and senior Logan Mahan received 14th place in the Gemini competition. Mu Alpha Theta National Convention 2013Basha High - (2013-2014) Basha was able to send their top four students to the grand finale of the Mu Alpha Theta National Convention, the State Bowl where only the top five states receive awards. 'We were HUGE underdogs and were told by someone that it would be impossible for us to place,' said teacher Mrs. Smith. Seniors David Li and Connor Schmitt, as well as juniors Samantha Bouchal and Sebastian Scouras, established themselves as true contenders by taking 3rd place in the biggest competition of the convention. Mu Alpha Theta National Convention 2013Basha High - (2013-2014) At the Career and Technical Education summer conference, in Tucson, Basha High was awarded Outstanding AgriScience Program of the Year from the Arizona Agricultural Teachers Association. This means that they are the No. 1 chapter in the state. The BHS AgriScience program will be representing Arizona at both the region and national levels. Teachers Sharon Metzger and Katharyn Kubista were honored with a plaque that is hanging in the front office of Basha High. Basha High - (2013-2014) Basha High School's AgriScience Department was awarded the NAAE Outstanding Agriculture Program of the Year at the Arizona Agricultural Education Association Annual Meeting in July. 'This is the highest honor that a program can receive from the state. It proves that we have a very strong program and our kids are working hard. It brings a lot of prestige to our program,' said Katharyn Kubista, AgriScience teacher at Basha High School.
