Welcome!
Welcome to Students of AP & Honors Biology!!! I look forward to working with each and every one of you this year. I also coach JV Football here at ACP. Due to my years of coaching, I usually respond quickest to "Coach" Mlazgar. But, be aware that this also means that in the fall, I will be out on the field for several hours each day after school. While you are welcome to come out if there is a pressing question needing to be answered, it is best to reach me by email or before school.
My Education and Professional Background
This will be my 36th year of teaching (and I look forward to it immensely)!!! While my early college was in Biology for Pre-Med at ASU (where I also played football - and we never lost to that Tucson school), I fell in love with teaching after taking a course in Elementary School Physical Education. Thus, I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and began teaching in Mesa at Ishikawa Elementary School. A couple of weeks into the year, my high school football coach (Jesse Parker) pulled me over to Mt View Mesa to coach football, where I also taught Driver's Ed and Weights and coached baseball before heading back to Ishikawa each day. I taught/coached at Ishikawa & Mt. View from 1986-2001 and then transferred to Red Mt. full time for a few years. My family built a home in Queen Creek and so, in 2005, I transferred to Queen Creek High School and moved into the classroom, teaching Biology, Anatomy, and Physical Science. In 2011, I transferred back to Mt. View and taught Biology, AP Biology, Anatomy, & Physical Science and retired in 2017. I was then hired at ALA Queen Creek to teach Biology and AP Biology and coached football and baseball for 5 years. I also hold a Master's Degree in Secondary Education from NAU along with innumerable certificates in teaching and coaching. Four years ago, I had the privilege to co-author a book on teaching modeling in biology and I am currently working on another.
I am married to my wonderful wife, Kim. We have 5 boys (Cliff, AJ, Nate, Seth, & Tyler) and 1 daughter, Ashley (the rose among the thorns).
My Educational Philosophy
Teaching Science to me is two things: hands on and fun. I do believe in the need for writing, to learn to get your thoughts on paper. I also believe that students will need to be prepared for class each day and expect to participate in lots of discussion, activities, and labs.
The Choice is Yours! Why Choose Arizona College Prep High School?
I am very grateful and excited to be at ACP. During the summer I had the privilege to get to know a lot of students while working with them in football. These are great kids who I can see that they are not only polite, but want to learn, work hard, and want to be successful. That is a great culture to be around both as a teacher and for other students. I also have now spent several weeks with a lot of our teachers and administrators and what strikes me more than anything is how much they care. I have had the opportunity to teach at some very high achieving and remarkable places in my 35 years. But, I can already tell you that this place, ACP, is special.
