    Emma Francisco, 11th grader at ACP Erie, is one of six winners of the 2019-20 Girls Rule Foundation Brilliant, Beautiful & Bold (BBB) Role Model Award. The BBB Role Model Awards & Mentoring Program is a special way that the Girls Rule Foundation celebrates and acknowledges girls who embody their principles of leadership and compassion. The six winners will receive $1,000 from the Laura Anderson Scholarship Fund to further their dreams, leadership mentoring from the Girls Rule Foundation, and many additional extraordinary opportunities throughout the year -- including being the face of Girls Rule for one year.     Congratulations to Elaina Ashton who has been selected as a semifinalist for the prestigious 2020 Coca-Cola Scholarship, a $20,000 achievement-based award to high school seniors who are "recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities." The Coca-Cola Scholars Program's stated goal is to cultivate "a network of leaders who create and inspire positive change in their communities and beyond." Almost 2,000 students were selected as semifinalists from over 93,000 applicants from across the U.S. From this number, 250 will advance as Regional Finalists, and 150 will become Coca-Cola Scholars.     ACP Erie's newly formed Troupe 8909 attended their first ever Arizona State Thespian Conference in downtown Phoenix. The troupe attended various workshops and competed in the one-act competition. Their showing of the one-act Pressure by Lindsey Price earned the troupe a superior rating. Not bad for their first year!

    Arizona Recycling Coalition Grant
    WASTECON 2019 showcased different types of sustainability methods being implementing all over the U.S. at the Phoenix Convention Center on Wednesday, Oct. 23. As part of the event, the Arizona Recycling Coalition announced their six $5,000 grant awardees... and we are proud to announce that three ACP Knights were granted a $5,000 award to start sytrofoam recycling in our own school cafeteria using Tenebrio beetles! The grant will fund an effort to manage styrofoam within the schools cafeteria, reduce ACP Erie's ecological footprint, and aim for a sustainable school. The president of the organization also mentioned that though there was a record number of applications this year, ACP Erie was on top of the list!     Hydrothermal Hat Presentation
    The Knights Innovators presented their idea of a Hydrothermal Hat to Maricopa Superintendent of Schools Steve Watson and Deputy Superintendent Matt Morales. Both of them had a great time at Rachna Nath's class playing with all of her pets. The team's Hydrothermal Hat idea was highly appreciated, and Mr. Morales is connecting the team with companies like Medtronics, SAP, Intel and First Solar. The team has also been invited by the Chandler Innovation Incubator program to start the Track 1 program and an entrepreneurship soon.

    Publishers of "The American Srbobran," the longest-running, continually published Serbian newspaper worldwide, selected an article by ACP's Katarina Marceta to publish. Her article highlighted another ACP Erie student, Adriana Kangrga, who spent the summer performing traditional Serbian dances across southeastern Europe. Katarina is the Editor-in-Chief of ACP Erie's "Knight Times" student-led newspaper and loves bringing words to life through journalism.     STYROFOAM BUSTERS! A group of eight students are looking at innovative ways to get rid of styrofoam pollution at ACP Erie. They are creating awareness among students to drop their used lunch plates in special containers, and then these students are collecting them everyday. The aim is to compress the styrofoam, hence reducing the volume and treat it with materials that will dissolve them. Creativity and innovativeness comes from critical thinking and problem solving.     Hydrothermal Hat Presentation
    ACP Erie's Lemelson-MIT team, the KNIGHTS INNOVATORS, presented their Hydrothermal Hat/Headband to the CEO of Chandler Innovations, Mrs. Daina White. Mrs. White invited the team to attend the Track 1 program that the City of Chandler sponsors in collaboration with NACET (Northern Arizona Center for Emerging Technologies) for starting their own entrepreneurship. These ACP students will now be able to access technical support, marketing support, patent support and meet with some of the top businessmen in Arizona to support their cause. The Knights Innovators started their track last Tuesday at Chandler Innovations in Downtown Chandler. This group consists primarily of freshman and sophomores.     ACP Erie is proud to have FOUR National Merit Scholar Semifinalists: Jayden Chen, Kazushi Iwamoto, Sharmila Nimbkar, and Orchee Syed. About 1.6 million students in some 22,000 high schools enter the National Merit Scholarship competition annually when they take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Semifinalists are the highest-scoring program entrants in each state and represent the top 0.5% of the state's senior students. Way to go, Knights!

    ACP Team with Mayor Hartke
    The ACP Erie 2019-2020 Lemelson-MIT team met with Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke and presented their Hydro-hat proposal. This hat has temperature, humidity and pulse meters in the frame. The hat is made of a wicking material and communicates through the sensors via Bluetooth to an app on the users phone, reporting the level of heat stress the user is under. The aim of the project is to reduce heat stress and heat related illnesses in Arizona. It is so cool that even our district athletes can benefit from it.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Kaitlyn Starks is the first female Arizona College Preparatory athlete to commit to playing at the collegiate level in soccer. Kaitlyn excels in everything she does. She is the current Student Government President and also a member of National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and She's the First. Kaitlyn was awarded Outstanding Student of the Year 2018-19 for her commitment to ACP and her classmates. She will graduate this year as a Distinguished Scholar and has earned an Academic Letter all four years for a GPA far above a 4.0. Kaitlyn is the Varsity Soccer Captain and has also earned an Athletic Letter all four years.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Arizona College Prep's Mackenzie Hanson puts 110% into everything she does. She has helped to develop the DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) program on ACP's campus and is currently a DECA State Officer. Competing at both state and national levels, she has earned 1st place in Buying and Merchandising Operation Research Event at the State Career Development Conference. She also received the DECA Speakers Bureau Award. Mackenzie also achieved athletic honors as a four-year varsity athlete. She has been recognized as Arizona All Academic Cross Country First Team, Soccer Player of the Game and Track MVP.     SENIOR HIGHLIGHT:  Susan Martin is a National Merit Finalist, Distinguished Scholar and an AP Scholar with Distinction. Susan's commitment to academics doesn't stop with her. She is the president of Arizona College Prep's Tutor Club, pairing students with peer mentors, scheduling times and places for them to meet. Susan is also involved in several clubs and organizations on campus: Spanish Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, National Honor Society, Comic Club and Mu Alpha Theta Club.     ACP Erie at Biophest 2019
    Two Biophysics Club students from ACP Erie, Sejal Jain and Michelle Sheikh, presented their work at Biophest 2019 at ASU on March 30 in ACP Erie and ASU's first collaboration to develop a biophysics pipeline. Sejal and Michelle were the only two high school students in attendance, making their presentation in front of over 300 ASU graduate students.     Kazushi Iwamoto placed 2nd place overall at the Arizona Junior Science and Humanities Symposium finals. This finish earned Kazushi a $1,500 scholarship and a spot as a presenter at the Nationals Science and Humanities Symposium in New Mexico this April. This is a wonderful opportunity as the state of Arizona can only earn two spots for presenters at nationals each year.
