    Course Description:

The Soccer Academy is an integral part of the total education process at Dr. Camille Casteel High School. The Academy will encourage students and reward kids to work hard regardless of where in the soccer development process they are. The novice, intermediate, and highly skilled player will benefit from the Soccer Academy Program that includes weight training, technical, tactical, physiological, and psychological education. Players will train on the field 1.5 days a week and weight train 2.5 days a week. Finally, academic excellence is an expectation of the soccer academy.

    CASTEEL WEIGHT TRAINING PRINCIPLES

In our search for the perfect strength program we’ve found there are 3 types of coaches:  ones who uses Olympic lifts primarily and the rest of the exercises are based off of that.  The second type of coach tries to use functional exercises that mimic the sports movements.  The third type of coach uses high intensity principles.  Most coaches are stubborn and locked into a steadfast system that they feel is the only way to go. We’re fortunate enough to have a Strength Coach on our campus, Rob Brokau, who taps into all three of these systems and is consistently researching topics in this area to improve our program.  Coach Brokau will be sending out information about his performance/strength academy within the next few weeks.

     GRADING POLICY

Grades will be calculated from the student’s dressing out each day and class participation. Grades are based on cumulative points per semester and calculated into a percentage.

Letter grades are based on the following percentages:

                                        90% - 100%   = A            15 points per day

                                        80% - 89%     = B            5 points Dressing out (full gear)

                                        70% - 79%     = C            5 Being on time/Not Tardy

     Attendance and Makeup Work Standards:

Absences are limited to 10 class periods per semester (CCHS policy). Each day students may earn 15 points. Students who do not attend the day's activities will not receive any points. However, any student will have an opportunity to make up points. Students who do not attend or participate in class will have the option of practicing any soccer skills outside of class. Sixty minutes of activity equals 15 points of credit (outside soccer team/club practice will count towards credit). Parents please send an e-mail of what was performed and for how long.

Students may also summarize any sports, nutrition, or health article. Each article will be worth five points. This may be an option if you are hurt or injured. This may be completed in class or at home.  My e-mail address is lanman.greg@cusd80.com

    CASTEEL PROTOCOL FOR ALL CLASSES

    Technology:

With the 1:1 technology initiative, it is the responsibility of the student to bring their fully  charged laptop to school every day. Technology is a tool no different than a pencil. Like all  school supplies, students are expected to have the supplies needed to learn.

    Discipline Protocol:

It is the expectation that students hold themselves to high standards. The teacher will address  students who are not meeting these expectations. Typical classroom behaviors consequences  these are they standard progression for discipline

     a warning

     a warning with a phone call

     a Parent-teacher conference

     a referral.

Our goal is to work with families to ensure that all students have a safe and focused learning  environment.

    Tardy Protocol:

Students are expected to be in their seats when the bell rings and ready to learn. If a student is  tardy to class teachers will follow this progress to rectify students being late to class.   a warning on their first and second offense.

 the teacher will email / call home.

 Notify Attendance Interventionist and email / call home.

 On the fifth offense, the teacher will refer the student to our Attendance Interventionist,  who can work with families and assign Saturday school if necessary.

The teacher has the option to provide their own lunch detention at their discretion instead of  writing a conduct referral.

    Absences:

Students who have excused absences have at least one day every day they are absent to make up  the work they missed. Excessive absences can result in the loss of a credit for the course.

    Grading Categories:

<<Please include your grade level / department consistent grading system>>

    Food and Drink:

There is no food or drink allowed in the classroom except water.

    Tutoring:

<<The times for your tutoring Availability.>>

    Finals:

Finals are not given early. Absent students will receive a zero until they can take the final.

We’re fortunate enough to have a Strength Coach on our campus, Chris Musselman, who taps into all three of these systems and is consistently researching topics in this area to improve our program.

To give you an idea of what the program looks like, we’re broken into three lifting days: “Squat, Push, and Pull days”.  Although this is what we label it, it doesn’t necessarily do it justice.  For Example, our day 1 lift may look like the following:

    (1) Spot

    (3) Main

    (2) Secondary

    (4) Aux

Players work line by line.  So, in the first line there are 4 positions/stations per line: the spot position, the Secondary lift, the Main lift, and the Auxiliary lift.  Players typically have 3-4 lines they have to get through in a particular day.  This particular day has 4 lines of exercises.

In the first line players are completing the following exercises:

    Secondary: Jump Lunges

    Main: Squat

    Auxiliary: Medicine ball twists

Looking at this workout, people would point out that they’re completing an Olympic lift; but that’s only a small fraction of the workout.  When you look at the tempo, secondary, and auxiliary workout you’ll notice were addressing high intensity principles and functional exercises.

Looking at the above workout, you’ll notice the main lift always has a tempo, percentage, sets, and reps associated with it.  For squats in the first line the athlete is working at a 101 tempo – this means that they go 1 second down and 1 second up.  As you can see the tempo is different for line 2.  Line 2 has a 301 tempo for Good Mornings, which means that a player goes three seconds down and 1 second up.  Because of the tempo the percentage is drastically different (35%).  The percentage gives the Player and estimate of the weight to be used for the exercise based on their goal max.  Sets are the number of times we complete a certain number of repetitions for each exercise.  In this case, they complete 3 sets of 8 repetitions.

The above workout is an example of where our players might be entering year two of the strength program.  This is not where we initially start.  In the beginning of the Strength program, the first 4 ½ weeks, we spend time mastering the technique needed to complete each exercise safely and introducing players to proper nutrition.  In those first 4 ½ weeks we typically use little to no weight while learning how to properly set our hips, spine angle, feet, knee path, etc. while completing exercises.  No matter where we are in the lifting cycle we preach technique over the amount of weight or speed we want to push, pull, or squat.  In fact, I’ve seen Coach Musselman pull kids from the weight room for improper technique or trying to lift more than they are capable of doing.

In addition to our regular lifting cycles, depending on how far along we are or what part of the season we’re in, players may complete some circuit training where they complete 25 seconds of work, have 10 seconds of transition to the next exercise, and repeat.

I’d put our strength program up against anyone’s in the state.  We’ve had several high school strength and conditioning coaches come through our program looking to mimic the things we do at their own school (many of these 6A schools).  That being said, it’s hard to compare what we do with what can be done with an individual trainer.  Obviously, that trainer is going to be able to spend more one-to-one time with Landon and Zach when it comes to their personal strength development, so they might have him on a tailor-fit program.  But I can also tell you that our strength program is an extension of practices and really lend themselves to team-building and collective achievement.  It’s an essential component of what we do.

Coach Musselman and I are constantly keeping up-to-date with the most recent studies with regards to strength when it comes to soccer players.  Whether it’s an article about weight lifting techniques related to speed, modifying workloads to increase a player’s endurance, or injury prevention through strength training, we try not to leave any stone unturned.

I’m very proud of the program we’ve put together.  It’s still a work in progress but Coach Musselman is one of the most genuine people you’ll meet.  He really does have our athletes best interest at heart.  We’re very fortunate to have a guy like Chris on campus.  I’d encourage you to reach out to him with any questions or concerns you may have: Musselman.chris@cusd80.com.  He understands weight training at a very high level.
